Benjani still tipped as top scorer

Benjani will still finish this season as Pompey's top scorer! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from Et_tu_Pompeii's poll are thoughts that I share... at the moment.

Benjani started the season like a house on fire and was previously voted the man most likely to finish our season as the top scorer, but in recent weeks the goals have dried up a bit and some of his finishing has not been 'great'. Nevertheless he is working as hard as ever and does still look threatening so with him likely to be a virtual ever present the goals should keep coming.

I have always had faith that with the right players around him, and ideally the right striker alongside him Benjani would always score goals, so depending on who we can get striker wise in January I would not change my feeling that he will finish top scorer for Pompey.

If, however we can get a proven goalscorer arrive in January, depending on how many goals Benjani scores between now and then, along with how this striker settles this 'newbie' - whoever he is - could still catch and overtake him?

What the poll asked - So who now will finish the season as our top scorer?

How you voted - Benjani 61%, Muntari 12%, A new player in January 10%, Nugent 6%, Kranjcar 4%, Utaka 3%, Kanu 2%, Another current player 2%

Current Poll - The FA cup for us starts early in the new year, but how far can we go?

We travel to Ipswich in the 3rd round of the FA cup this season. We would expect to win that tie, but how far can we go, could it be all the way - this is what NinjaTim wants to know with this - 'the way to Wembley: Does our cup runneth over? How will we do in the FA cup this season?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

Well, he's up front on his own, and he's got a cheeky headstart on the rest. Even if he only scores a handful more this season he'll still be top.

i wouldnt be so quick to think that mate - depending on who we can bring in in january and how profilic the are benji could still be caught? if however he picks up another 5 goals or so between now and the hopeful arrive of this striker he will be well out in front wont he so will take some catching...
pompeyrug
didnt we have the same situation last season with Kanu, and he ended up being the leading scorer. I think history will repeat itself
whitestones
kanu barely scored after novemeber tho did he - i just hope that benji doesnt go the same way, and since my birthday - 3rd november - he hasnt scored...
pompeyrug
its you rug, and ur cursed birthday ;)
whitestones
Funny that rug, he hasn't scored since my birthday either - Nov 26th...;-)
pentonpompey
Apart from that, I can't see anybody else topping him, no matter who we bring in. Anyone scoring ten in the second half would have done well
pentonpompey
whey november birthdays. i celebrated my 18th on nov 21st. he hasnt scored since then... kranjcar has scored twice including then. anyway its just a matter of time til benji scores again he is a quality player and the actim index proves it, and as long as everyone else keeps banging them in then we have no problem

I still think Defoe will come in and we'll play 442 and he'll over take Benji.. but as long as he scores again soon I don't really care ... would be good to see him get a couple at the Park on Saturday... as for Birthdays.. I can claim the best stat... Pompey haven't lost since mine ... 2nd September !

my birthday saw us beat the barcodes 4-1 tho didnt it whitestones, so not a bad day really :-) if only i was 18 again like jbaker...
pompeyrug
technically pompey have lost in that time - just not in the league... i can still top that stat tho Chix my nephew - reece - remains unbeaten in the league as a pompey fan :-) he was born a couple of days after the arsenal debarcle...
pompeyrug
if we all get behind reece, then surely pompey will get into the champions league!
jbaker
Blimey! whats that feel like as a fan, to be unbeaten in you're lifetime?????
pentonpompey
a bit like jose mourinho :P

well we do call reecey 'the special one' which he is :-) i cannot wait for the day that he is old enough to understand - by then we will be 'bored' with constantly winning things tho :-) - that he had such a great run at the start of his lifetime... im not expecting the champions league but im not writing it off, i do really think that someone new will break into the top 4 this season so why not pompey?
pompeyrug
i think the reason we are doing so well away from home is because teams arent prepared to settle for a draw at their home ground, so they cant sit back and stop us from counter attacking, similar to the teams who have held us at fortress fratton. so if this continues to be the case then we can carry on picking up points, then why not challenge for the top 6? i was joking when i said champions league, but this is the stuff dreams are made of...
jbaker
it could happen mate... that is spot on, our set-up if perfect for the away games we can break in number with power and speed, it is just not working at home is it, teams are not going to give us the time and freedom are they we need to go 4-4-2 at home to make it something different.
