Pompey in for Derby's Giles Barnes?

Pompey in for Derby's Giles Barnes?

Giles Barnes is the golden boy of Derby, he helped them to promotion to the promised land, but since then has struggled with injury - he was even injured during the play off semi final win over the Saints last season, but was still fit enough to see them off.

He has made his return recently, but despite fending off summer interest from West Ham he looks destined to leave Pride Park in January, but West Ham seem to have dropped out of the race?

Villa were strongly linked with him at the tail end of the weekend, with them reportedly now being joined by City and Pompey, so a battle to land the England U21 star is said to be ready to begin in the new year.

Barnes is a class act, and in his limited appearance in the top flight - added to that what I saw of him in the Championship - he does not look out of place but would he fit into the set up at Pompey though? Even with the African nations we still appear to have enough in midfield to cover this.

That said though another bright young English talent coming to Pompey would not be a bad thing would it, at 19 he has a good 15 years or so of his very best to offer yet doesn't he...

As I say I am not so sure, I would not say no, but is midfield an area that we really need to look at that much in January - as talented as he is the reported £5m fee could be spent elsewhere strengthening the side couldn't it?

Got to be honest....don't remember ever having seen the lad play. He's young, he's English = 'Arry won't put him in the team. for the future apparently...

i think its a misconception that 'arry doesnt give young english talent a chance... he might not do it so much at pompey but he did this all the time at west ham didnt he and also did this with the lot down the road didnt he?
11/12/2007 11:57:00
True Rug......Harry's record in bringing on young English talent at West Ham was great; Ferdinand, Lampard, Joe Cole, Carrick, Defoe etc.
11/12/2007 13:33:00
Prospects are great, but don't we already have one Championship superstar sitting on the bench waiting for his bus to stardom ? - Lets get someone with some experience, i.e. Crouch, Kanoute, Lita etc.
11/12/2007 13:57:00
You know me I love the young prospects, but you do have a good point in that the money could be spent on a quality player that could give us a boost immediately. It all depends on how much money is available and who will go come january
11/12/2007 15:43:00
id prefer to see us keep matty than buy giles barnes, but he is probably the most talked about 19 year old in the premiership (other than fabregas) so he cant be bad...
11/12/2007 16:58:00
injuries are something we should also look at, and if we need him. utaka is gonna be around for some time and we have kranjcar too on the right, with gutierrez being looked at too! we dont want another songo'o (right wonger who never even gets considered), who incidently i really want to see play as iv only heard good things about him!
11/12/2007 17:00:00
Have to agree with you totally jbaker, Keep Matty and spend the money else where. Songoo by the way, nice footballer. played alright every time ive seen him anyway.
11/12/2007 17:26:00
As well as buying for our immediate needs we have to keep on eye on the future .. I don't like the fact that he's had more than the 'odd' injury but I definately think we should looking at him seriously... Derby will need to raise cash and this is one sure way to do it .... I say yes... as long as we get the striker and winger we need as well
11/12/2007 18:26:00
I agree chixy, its all depends on the finances available, if 3 quality players without losing any (notably matty or Nuge) then i'm all for getting him, i think he has a bright future

MotM in poor Notts County show...Cambridge next

There wasn't too much to cheer from the Notts County defeat was there, well certainly not the 2nd half at Fratton Park but one plus was seen as Amine Linganzi for Pompey.
