Recently a lot has been made about the possibility of players maybe being sold in January, with many voicing their opinions that this should not happen - and within reason rightly so.
What I have read in the papers - albeit in online versions as I do not, and will not pay for them! - over the past few days regarding players such as Matty Taylor and Dave Nugent being sold to 'fund new arrivals' is absolutely ludicrous and what would it achieve?
Talk of fees of around £4m apiece for these 2 have been mentioned, which in today's market, particularly where Taylor is concerned is not enough, nowhere near and if he were sold for that amount I would be livid. But the point is how could we improve our squad by selling two players of that quality - again within reason - at any price, let alone that sort of price...
To buy players of an equal or better quality we would have to pay a lot more than that, so although we might be able to improve on their quality slightly - which I still doubt to be honest - in terms of personnel we would not increase our numbers, which is what Harry Redknapp keeps saying he has to do?
I can appreciate that 'the books have to be balanced' but I thought that we had moved past 'having to sell players to buy others', or is that not really the case?
If players had to go in order to others to arrive, and unless people like Taylor and Nugent do want to leave - which maybe they might? - as much as I would not want them to go really people like Djimi Traore, Lauren and Richard Hughes would surely have to be the sacrificial lambs, if for nothing else to get them off the wage bill, we could then bring in 3 players to replace these, quite possibly getting some loan deals if needed too.
Again, as I say, unless they want to go I cannot see the benefits at all in letting Taylor or Nugent in particular go...
