What would be the point?

What would be the point?

Recently a lot has been made about the possibility of players maybe being sold in January, with many voicing their opinions that this should not happen - and within reason rightly so.

What I have read in the papers - albeit in online versions as I do not, and will not pay for them! - over the past few days regarding players such as Matty Taylor and Dave Nugent being sold to 'fund new arrivals' is absolutely ludicrous and what would it achieve?

Talk of fees of around £4m apiece for these 2 have been mentioned, which in today's market, particularly where Taylor is concerned is not enough, nowhere near and if he were sold for that amount I would be livid. But the point is how could we improve our squad by selling two players of that quality - again within reason - at any price, let alone that sort of price...

To buy players of an equal or better quality we would have to pay a lot more than that, so although we might be able to improve on their quality slightly - which I still doubt to be honest - in terms of personnel we would not increase our numbers, which is what Harry Redknapp keeps saying he has to do?

I can appreciate that 'the books have to be balanced' but I thought that we had moved past 'having to sell players to buy others', or is that not really the case?

If players had to go in order to others to arrive, and unless people like Taylor and Nugent do want to leave - which maybe they might? - as much as I would not want them to go really people like Djimi Traore, Lauren and Richard Hughes would surely have to be the sacrificial lambs, if for nothing else to get them off the wage bill, we could then bring in 3 players to replace these, quite possibly getting some loan deals if needed too.

Again, as I say, unless they want to go I cannot see the benefits at all in letting Taylor or Nugent in particular go...

i still dont understand why taylor didnt come on for utaka, and why he wasnt starting in the first place! I would have rather seen nugent come on - 3 goals up, 20 minutes to go, why bring on kanu? nugent needs the game time, and we were very unlikely to loose from that position. I really dont want to see either go, but harry just isnt playing either of them, so i would understand if they did leave - i would just be gutted! Taylor must be worth at least 8 million (he was over the summer) and nugent - selling him for 4 million harldy seems worthwhile. we need both of them in january, so i dont see any point whatsoever in selling them...

Kanu is an 'arry favourite, that is clear, he seems to get at least 20 mins from the bench, thing is, if we are 3-1 up why not let a bloke trying to carve a niche for himself on?

surely wo do not 'have to sell' to buy new players? what benefit would we get from selling matty taylor and nugent simply to replace them, maybe others than arent getting much look in or are not likely to can be let go, that would free up some funds - unless they want to go - selling quality isnt worth it is it...

completely agree paul - utaka is struggling, matty taylor seemed to be a more worthwhile option than kanu didnt he then we would have had another look at matty taylor to see if he and kranjcar could fill the flanks - if it is to get kanu his contract sooner rather than later we should have just given him a 2 year deal to begin with...

i think pompeycarpet has a valid point, i thought Utaka was quite lazy yesterday and the game was too fast for Kanu to keep up with
09/12/2007 15:50:00
I agree with you mates, Nugent needs the bit of playing time a lot more that Kanu, for his confidence is nothing else, and I dont see the point to selling either of them. If we sell taylor 'arry will need to search for another player to play on the left flank and if he sells Nuge he will need 2 additional striker to buy!! doesnt make sense.

Agreed Russ, Kanu look to be playing a game by himself, Utaka....Who? Nigerias opposition in the ANC must be quaking...Ha Ha

kanu just cannot play the lone striker role can he it is wasting his and everyone else's talent... when we break using the wide areas he just cannot keep up with play so we have no one in the middle at all - it was just as well we were 3-0 up when he came on, but then that said it would have been much more productive to have brought on someone that needed the games - then again in order to get his 20 he needs them too, and it seems like we cannot give them to him soon enough!

Can't understand why we're not using the strength in depth - ie by bringing off Utaka as he's not playing up to scratch and putting on Matty - and why we're not using the flexibility in the team of 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. Surely when Kanu comes on alongside Benji we should switch to 4-4-2? But I suppose we can't complain, we're winning after all.

I'm sure they won't sell Matty for $4million. Arry wasn't born yesterday. The fact that he chose not to play Taylor on Saturday would seem to signal that Matty will not be sticking around though.

Another Fratton disappointment

That 2nd half on Saturday against Notts County was woeful - absolutely awful wasn't it. The first 15-minutes or so of it was like a pre-season friendly to pre-season!

Match highlights - Pompey 1-2 Notts County

What a disappointment that was! The 1st half wasn't bad, in fact large chunks of it were good but the 2nd half was just woeful with a soft centred Pompey beaten 2-1 by Notts County.
