'Arry may search the lower leagues

Harry Redknapp has told The News how he might look to the lower leagues in England to solve his 'headache' that will be caused by the African nations in the new year: 'when the African Nations Cup comes around, I will lose four players and be left with 14 outfield players who can play in the Premier League.

'If I get an injury, I'm in trouble.

'You cannot go with just 14 players.

'I'll look anywhere, including the lower divisions, to see if I think someone could come in and do a job.

'If there are lads at lower league clubs, I'd love to give them an opportunity to come into the squad.

'When I was at West Ham, I took people like Matty Holmes from Bournemouth and I'm looking round to see if there's someone down there'.

To be honest I do not think that we should have much trouble attracting players in the January sales, this is providing that we have the money?

We will miss these players going away for the African nations but we were well aware that this was going to happen and do have players to cover this, and we always were looking to bring in new players anyway - so this has not changed.

I would be happy to see some young talent from the lower leagues make the step up, and do feel the talent it out there and this will not be a gamble - providing they are the right people, which you would expect they would be.

It looks like players will probably leave in the new year so we might have to cope with that too but we still have enough players here to cope - particularly taking into account others will sign - people like Arnold Mvuemba have not even got a look in this season so I would expect to see more of him and possibly Martin Cranie again if he has recovered by then, which the chances are he will have.

Either way, be it with the players we have and/or those that will arrive we will be fine and can get through this period - if some younger talent from the lower leagues could also join us to benefit us now and in the future that will be an added bonus.

:-) quick thinking mate...

This sounds so desperate! And yet he's talking of letting Matty go ?
tracyc
Or is it that Matty wants to go?
NinjaTim
i think that its a combination of both tbh - altho i dont think that we have heard the last of this chapter yet... taylor has reacted, but in a positive way - which in all fairness 'arry wasnt actually saying he wanted rid of matty taylor was he...
pompeyrug
i like the thought of getting more young talent tho tbh - and it would be even better if they were english...
pompeyrug
Didn't Nugent come from the lower leagues then? Doesn't get much of a sniff, even a 75% fit Kanu gets more of a run out

Well that settles it. HR should be the England manager (and I mean that in a positive way). If we had an England manager who would be diligent enough to scour the lower leagues for contributors to the national side, it would be a huge step in the right direction. Well done Arry. Now play Taylor on Saturday & make yourself even more popular.

Mvuemba is a fine talent and if Harry can work with him he should be a fine replacement for Muntari during the ANC.

I'm actually looking forward to the crisis phase during the ANC, it will truly show what we are made of and it will make Harry play some of the players he hasn't been playing although they should have been, namely Taylor and Nugent

yep agreed mate - others will have a chance, it will be down to them to take it, if they do the african lads should then have to earn the shirt back - no matter how good they are and how much they cost...

kanu 75% fit - isnt that a big generous paul ;-)

.....surely more like 7.5% - It's an interesting take.. What 'arry is saying is that he is willing to look to the lower leagues to strenghten the squad.. no that's all very well and good ... but if he lets the likes of Djimi, Lauren, Taylor, Nugent. Hughes etc.. leave in January as we expect he will, then what he is 'actually' saying is that those players can not do a job as well as somebody from say the championship.. I find this hard to believe ... especially in Nugents, Taylors and Hughsies case... I think, regardless of the ACofN that we need to strengthen and we must see a right sided midfielder/winger come in (on the assumption that he aint gonna swap Niko and use Matty) and also another forward minimum...
