Taylor can go for the right price

For the first time Harry Redknapp has admitted that Pompey would be prepared to sell Matty Taylor... but only if the price is right.

Taylor himself put some serious question marks against his Pompey future for the first time last week in his setanta sports column, and after not getting on at the weekend when the game appeared to be crying out for him to do so that appeared to well and truly show the writing was on the wall.

Now Redknapp has admitted to The News that he could go in January: 'Niko has been playing so well that it's been difficult for Matty.

'I understand his position. If he's unhappy and someone made a good offer then we would not stand in his way.

'I do not want to lose him. I like him very much. He's a good pro, he's done a terrific job for this club.

'But I'm not going to keep a player who wants to go - that's never been my policy.

'I understand exactly how Matty feels not being in the team at the moment. He's a good lad who trains hard and shows a fantastic attitude.

'I understand what Matty is saying. If he wants to move and it's a good offer then I wouldn't stop him.

'But it would have to take a good offer'.

I fully understand and accept what Redknapp says and as much as I would love to see Taylor play more often again if it is for the best for both Pompey and Taylor for him to leave then I will accept this.

Some of my problems that I have however though are:

1) If Niko Kranjcar - who is playing out of his skin this season, so would never be left out of my side - who is a right footed player, yet he is played on the left can be used that way why, with John Utaka so out of form recently is Taylor then not being given a chance, even if this means playing him on the right when he is a left footer? Simple solution would be to do this, we could then switch Kranjcar and Taylor over? Could we not? So this seems to suggest to me that he just is not part of his plans at all as Utaka has been off form for weeks...

2) Redknapp says that it will take 'a good offer', but what is a good offer? It is commonly known that English players are sold for a price that is usually more than their worth. So as much as Taylor does deserve a move - if he goes - to a team that will play him I hope we do not sell him too cheaply... after all he is a potential England international!

It will be a sad day if/when Taylor goes but if it is for the best then this is another sacrifice that we have to make, and it would be for the greater good.

If it happens hopefully it will be worth it for all concerned...

Just hope he doesn't go elsewhere and sit on another's bench.

teams like reading, sunderland, fulham, wigan and so on seem to be linked with him... i always thought he was 'better than that' - but as i said to plymouth graham at the game on saturday if he went there he would play, which might put him 'in the shop window' again? whatever tho, if he does i just hope he goes for an amount that is fair - and not a riduculously low sum on deadline day to finance another move...

It will be a sad day when Matt leaves. I can't see how it would improve the team to see him go, but what do I know? This season, the team has looked so much stronger than I thought we were going to be I'm feeling a bit lost.

We could be looking at quite a few departures this Jan, Taylor, Hughes, Mendes, Treore, Nugent, quite a bit of talent there!

So finally 'arry has said what we have all been thinking for a while. The thing that upsets me the most is that if he sold him in september he could have gotten so much more for him, now that he has been rotting on the bench for 3 months no one will pay as much, they all know how good matty taylor is but since they know 'arry is keen to sell they will give lowball offers, its a bad piece of business on his part. As for the other transfers I cant see Mendes leaving (he has been featured in 11 matches in all competition, he isnt in the same situation as taylor) and Nugent is one for the future and he will stay, it makes no sense to spend 6 mill on a player and then sell him 4 months later, Kanu is 31 and will stay at the club for another year and a half max, we will need Nugent. As for the other 3 they are leaving for sure.

Trouble is, Matty is one of those players that can lift the crowd with his commitment. Would be gutted to see him go, but to be honest, i'm gutted to see him sitting on the bench.

im with you Pompey4me, what a waste! He is one of the few players whom i can remember that makes me sit on the edge of my seat, everytime hegets the ball. That for me is worth the admission price alone!...let alone from a left back/midfielder!!!!!

...there is absolutely no reason why he couldn't play a 4-4-2 at home games, with Kranjcar up front and MT in left midfield. It's not as if we're scoring bundles at the moment is it ? Don't want to be a dissenter in the ranks but at times, HR can be very one dimensional in terms of tactics.

Thing is T4P, I dont always agrre with what arry does at pompey, but he is the best man for the job! I am just confused at the moment. i want to see the exciting attacking football back at fratton park again!

Matty Taylor IS pompey in so many respects, and it is shameful that he is being shown absolutely no respect. As pompey4me said above, he is the type of player that lifts the crowd, and, for that matter, one of the few we have who can turn the tide of a game. If he leaves, he'll come back to haunt us.

I think he still probably is the best manager for us pompey4me, (certainly better than Alain Perrin !), but it sure seems like he can be an arrogant ******** at times.

as much as i would like to see matty taylor stay and matty taylor play, i have complete faith in 'arry and what he is doing - if his vision doesnt include matty taylor, as sad as i am now that he isnt playing, and would be if he went 'arry does know best... we were gutted when o'neil left, but tbh 'arry was right to a fair degree there wasnt he and it has allowed o'neil to play - albeit for a poor side - so whatever happens with matty taylor will be the right thing. i dont wish this on anyone but an injury could crop up, matty taylor will get in and will prove why he should stay - we just dont know?

paultsmouth, i still feel that we have a good core of english blood at this club dont we and even if matty taylor does go i feel sure he will be replaced by another englishman - defoe, crouchy or lita - and other english players could also come in january to add to what we have.

I'll be gutted to see Matty leave, but I think we all know its going to happen. Harry has had the chance to fit him in if he wanted to, as others have said, switch him and Kranjcar around and play them both - but he's obviously not part of Harry's plans, and needs to move on for his own sake. He's 26 now, so if he doesn't get into the England set up soon, it will be too late. But I do wonder if our excellent Pompey team this season would have been even better with Matty in it - perhaps a couple more home wins instead of 0-0's?

Yep, gutted if he goes. Was chuffed we signed him, even more so when he played. Even those early days, which turned out to be our Championship winning season, he was fantastic. Remember those goals at Notts Forest Leciester, let alone the assists. More recently great goals at Sunderland & Arsenal & the Goal of the Season that never was with Everton a year ago. I think HR has a plan, a system & sadly MT is a square peg in a round hole.

agreed mate - and as i keep saying as gutted as i will be to see him leave, along with others - like i was o'neil - 'arry does have this plan, so long as it comes off - which it does look like - then we cannot really question it can we?

Discontent with HR? We're in the best position we've been in for 50 years! All Harry has said is that he wouldn't stand in a player's way if they wanted to leave. And if Matty wanted to leave, it would have to be a very good offer for him to allow him to go.

ive never felt any discontent towards 'arry - and doubt i ever will, frustration at what sometimes appears to be looking him in the face but he wont do, but not discontent... altho he is manager im not, so he knows best.

Just because Harry has got us to where we are doesn't mean he is always right... The situation with GON was crazy we sold a midfeilder who was happy to play out of position on the right and replaced him with (so far) 6million worth of not much.... If Matty goes It'll be a sad day that'll be the two players who most fans would have agreed were the two 'most Pompey' at the end of last season.. I'm not sentimentalist but these players are what Pompey is all about HEART ... If you ooking for a dissenter.. look now further.. Harry is doing a great job... but he is making a mistake with Taylor as he did with O'Neil... very foolish if you ask me..
