'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Taylor's first signs of discontent

I always enjoy reading Matty Taylor's blogs on setanta sports but his most recent one today here shows his first real signs that he might be looking to move on in January...

Reading these blogs I have always been more than impressed with his attitude towards not playing, he has accepted that others had been playing well so it is understandable that he could not get into the side, but he now admits that if he does not get some action in December he will have to look at his own position with the club: 'This season is proving to be a difficult one and it's getting to a point where I've got to play football. If not, I've got to do something about it.

'My aim is to keep trying my best to get into the team, but if I don't get a chance during December I've got to start evaluating things.

'Hopefully I'll get a chance to show what I can do because I know I can make an impact on The Premier League, but obviously it's difficult to moan at the moment because the team's playing well'.

His frustration is understandable and others playing so well makes it hard for him to get in, but - and as I have already pointed out this week - my own personally thoughts are that not everyone has been playing as well recently as they were, the man that I mostly mean is John Utaka - don't get me wrong I like the fella and think he will be fantastic for Pompey.

Providing Taylor stays he is likely to get plenty of football in January, but I can see why his frustration is building as Utaka has been off form for a number of weeks now, yet he stays in the team, so the longer this happens the more likely it is that Taylor will move on anyway - not because he wants to, but for the sake of his career... he is a footballer, he just wants to play and preferably he wants that here, as do we.

We will find out soon enough what Harry Redknapp decides, but once again I find myself saying - and not just because of what Taylor has written - I very much hope that Redknapp does give Taylor a start tomorrow, even if this means Utaka missing out, which I do not think it will be a bad thing in the long run.

I'm a big fan of Matty's and hope he stays, but can't see it happening in Jan with other clubs already starting to make noises about him. Him, Lauren, Hughes I think would be prime for moves.

come january he will be needed, harry has been consistent in that if you play well, you stay in, so if he gets in, its up to him

I think he will stay in January & more likely to go in the summer. With all the Africans off to top up their sun tans, we will need all we have. Unless of course, HR has someone lined up we sell MT for a silly price. Either way I will sorry to see him go, he has been a star for us since day one.
storagematt
i agree with you storagematt, the african nations cup departures will cause him to get a few games but he doesn't get on at all with Redknapp so i think in the summer he will go.
russellm
I now feel that he will go, and bring in a decent fee for Harry to spend on the type of players he think will take us to the next level. Sadly i thought that Matty would always be part of that, but you can blame him for wanting to go. He would be sadly missed by all of us i am sure.
Owenspompey
actually, i think that this is just showng HOW commited he is to the football club! he has not been getting the games he deserves, so quite rightly, will be looking to move on, IF he doesnt see himself as having any chance of playing - but the fact it has taken him so long to decided that, and that he said he would only evaluate the situation if he didnt play, i see it as a prett sure sign he will stay, at least untill the summer.

If he gets in, he will stay there, Mendes is in a similar position but so far he has dropped short of his own standards when he has come on
paultsmouth
i dont think anyone is doubting his commitment carpet tho are they? agree with paul if he gets a chance he will take it, mendes hasnt but im sure both will if/when they get it again - hopefully matty's will come sooner rather than later...

I have to say that Harry dropped the ball on this one, Taylor was very highly rated last season, he showed what he can do and we could easily have gotten 7+ million for him, now if 'arry were to sell him he would get 5 million max. I dont understand why he didnt get playing time every now and then (at least) since Harry already knew what how good Matty can play.

I think you guys have said it all - He's been loyal to the cause, he knows his own abilities and must know there are a few teams out there who he could do a decent job for ... If you were in his shoes what would you do .? I hope he stays but fear he won't unless he gets some action soon... In some respects if that isn't until the ACN then that is underlining his status as a bench player.. isn't it ?

really dont want him to go, we need the compatition in places!...but, always a but, if harry can use the money to improve the team, then I am happy with that. Only thing is, players like Matty are very hard to come by, Englsh, young & bloody good. Dont really want to see him go. If u did go, he would have to go to a lesser team, as he would get stuck in the same "bench" situation for any team above us.........dont go Matty!!!!

The siuation could change at any time, and Matty hears our feelings for us when he warms up and when he comes on, he knows how we feel about him, but he has to further his career, if he was a yard quicker the left back spot would have been his for the last few seasons, but lack of pace is a cruel thing.
Owenspompey
He can't really complain. Harry won't change a winning or unbeaten combination too drastically. He will get his chance in January and that is when he can stamp his authority. We certainly miss him as a penalty taker.

After todays game (Everton) I now firmly believe he will be off - The poor bloke must be fuming Pompey needed a injection of something and either Taylor or Nugent could have come on to replace the lack-lustre Utaka ... Taylor could have come on, swapped wings with Niko and provided Benji with some much needed supply...What happens Utaka goes off and Kanu (who ran out of breath getting changed) comes on, Benjani (the premierships top goalscorer gets shunted out to the right wing (hes no winger !) and Pompey lump balls to Kanu which takes Niko Kranjcar (our most effective player to that point) out of the game. If ever Taylor needed a message that he was not wanted .. He got it today - I say, Matty Taylor you are wasted on Pompeys bench, thanks for what you've done and as a true blue supporter I am really sorry that you are not allowed to show what you can do - We will be worse off without you'
Chix
Must have been great sat on the bench watching us struggle to break down the scouse, Nugent must look at Kanu with envy as well, he always gets at least 20 mins
paultsmouth
I have this increasing feeling of foreboding that we will lose Matty - especially after the Everton game. He has to play regularly, and nobody could blame him for moving on, but it will be a sad day.
tracyc
i was sure that matty taylor would come on at half time - when he didnt i thought he would get on at some point... the fact that he didnt makes me think that he is off now - the game was crying out for more natural width with matty taylor coming on, benji is wasted out wide then kanu is made to look like an old hasbeen - he looked shattered before he even got on. someone alongside him and it works...
pompeyrug
I think Matty needs to be selfish and move on for his own good..... It wasnt long ago that we were all lobbying england managers to put him in the England team and now he cant get a game! I dont think there is Pompey fan that will hold it against him and if there is they shouldnt.
Sachas_Brother
i wouldnt and wont - but i do wish he stayed, but if he isnt going to play he has to go... basically i now accept what 'arry does - i or should i say we might not agree but for 'the greater good' he knows what he is doing...
