Harry Redknapp Arrested!

The preparations for Pompey's game with Everton this weekend could be thrown into chaos with the club confirming reports that Harry Redknapp is one of 5 men with current/former connections to Pompey to be arrested...

Reports earlier had said that 5 men aged 69, 60, 55, 48 and 30 had been arrested by police investigating football corruption, with them arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud - even then I worried as these ages seemed to indicated Redknapp could be one of them.

It has now been confirmed that along with Redknapp Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie has also been arrested. According to the Evening Standard's This Is London website the others to be arrested are former Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric, former Pompey midfielder Amdy Faye and agent Willie McKay.

A spokeswoman for the Police said: 'five men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting as part of an ongoing investigation into football corruption.

'Three searches are currently under way. Five additional searches at a variety of locations across the country have been concluded'.

Portsmouth football club have confirmed that Redknapp and Storrie were 2 of the men arrested via a Pompey spokesman, who in a statement - despite stressing this matter was prior to the current ownership taking over - confirmed the reports, but said the pair have been given the clubs full support: 'Portsmouth Football Club can confirm that chief executive Peter Storrie and manager Harry Redknapp have today been asked to help police with their inquiries concerning a matter dating back to 2003.

'This was prior to the new owner taking control of the club at the beginning of 2006.

'The club is fully supportive of Peter and Harry who are cooperating fully with City of London Police in this ongoing inquiry.

'Both are playing major roles in the continued success of Portsmouth Football Club'.

I think it is probably safe to say that our worries that Redknapp might get the England job have gone away, but while I will admit I am worried at this point in time it is too early to speculate where this leaves him and Pompey...

Can I be the first to say "ooo err" and "there goes the England job".
stillthewhizz
Damn didn't see that one coming! Mind you, you don't get his nickname for no reason.
Real Deal
Can I be the second to say "there goes the England job"? And what a damn shame it is aswell.
Aamir
If it involves the transfer of Amdy Faye to the barcodes that happened in January 2005 and HR was not manager here then?
eastneydave
The autorities have to be seen to be doing there bit against crime since they can't seem to deal with real horrors. No smoke without fire though. I for one was hoping to scream how glorious our harry is during the agme on Saturday, let's hope he will be there for it.
storagematt
does it involve the transfer of faye to or from pompey tho?
pompeyrug
im glad that he is now out of the running for the england job - but i dont want him to be out of a job full stop!
pompeyrug
could this be a lessing in disguise??? a pretty drastic one granted, but surely he couldnt get the England job now???!!!! :):)
CharlieChimes
looking into 'arry's finances got the fa somewhere didnt it - at least they've ruled one out... more worryingly for us tho tho will he even have a job with pompey?
pompeyrug
Just heard on Sky Sports News that it relates to an event 4 years ago. So I was wrong it must be the purchase of Faye from Auxerre in July 2003.
eastneydave
They don't trust geezers.
Lysimachus
I have been ranting for years that Willie the crim Mckay would cause us grief and furthermore 6 or so weeks ago after returning from Toulouse i posted that the French Inland revenue were after Mckay for an auxerre transfer, they have more power and access to more intelligence than the police and generally don't get things wrong. This of course doesn't mean that Harry is guilty but you all recall what Milan thought of Mckay and as MM said, you lie down with dogs you get fleas. But still it doesn't mean anyone at the club is guilty.
russellm
i think that the vital leicter site summed it up quite well. just becasue he has been "taken in", it doesnt mean that he is actually being charged with anything. And also, whilst the media have called them "arrests", the pompy site gave the oposite impression, that they were helping the police although his house being "raided" didnt sound all that good!!!). in all serisosness though, im not particually concerend about it - either he did something, in which case do we really want a cheating fradster at a club looking to get a good reputation (albeit a good manager)?
pompeycarpet
Isn't it the case that Harry doesn't get involved in the finances of transfers - Peter Storrie does all that? Or was that the case back then? Yes the worry of the England job has gone, but that won't help us if he goes to prison. As far as I've heard nobody has been charged with anything - so fingers crossed it will all blow over.
tracyc
hopefully it will blow over - all we can do is sit tight and wait, we should have steered clear of willie mckay and the like, as exactly like russ says as milan had you are asking for trouble... 'arry is no angel, but hopefully he isnt involved in anything too 'dodgy'...
pompeyrug
the question is, will it blow over BEFORE the weekend?what effect will it have on our team? will morale fall apart? will we succombe to the...mighty...everton? lets hope that whatever happens, happens quickly...and when it happens, its good for pompey (ie, released, and payed 30 million compensation for disrupting the team...that would be nice...)
pompeycarpet
just caught the end of something on the radio, not sure who was saying it but they said: 'there is no allegation that 'arry or storrie have done anything wrong'... 'none whatesoever'.
pompeyrug
harry has said: 'nothing directly concerned him, he was only arrested to go to the police station to answer some questions. he thinks this is the end of the matter as far as he is concerned'... hopefully it is!
pompeyrug
media hype...again (hopefully)
pompeycarpet
This is normal, this arrest/co-operating thing. I was once beaten up an handcuffed by the police just for telling a passing copper the time.
Lysimachus
The club came out very strongly in support in a statement at 18.16 today and I understand from the reports i have heard that no charges are expected against anyone other than the crim MC#** and i personally hope they throw him out of the game and in prison, preferably a French one. My journo mate says HR,MM & PS were cautioned voluntarily to corroborate or not the crims story. Personally I feel sorry for the club and for Harry, just when the credit deserved is finally being paid this comes along to knock them back. Then you have to wonder what Sasha makes of it all having worked so hard and invested so much.Hopefully there will be a team backlash against Everton.
russellm
Quite right Russ a team backlash against the toffees should result from this. To make the night all the worse we slip a place with Villa's win at Ewood.
eastneydave
im sad for 'arry that all his hard work, effort and so on will again by 'ruined' by this, as people will always use things like this against him rather than give him credit where it is deserved wont they... yep i reckon this is the end of it now as far as any problems go for 'arry now - at least he is out of the england running!
pompeyrug
I have just heard HRs solicitor, Paul Martin, say that both Redknapp and Storrie have been helping police with inquiries into two other people. They have both now been released. He was outside Chichester Police station.
eastneydave
Why does it mean he is out of the running for the England job? If, as we think he is 'just helping police with their enquiries' and 'he has done nothing wrong' Why do we suddenly think he can't get the England job... Surely by saying that he can't the inferrence is that he HAS done something wrong. The logic is flawed fellas .. unless I'm missing something ...
Chix
when you have only one Balkan boy(Milan Mandaric) in your team you have to know that you are on the edge :-))
andycroat28
Harry will come out of this a clean as a whistle. The authorities (spineless buffers) have never liked his "geezer" image. Corruption is doubtless present in football but don't lay the blame at Harry's door. He's a soft target for them because of his image.
NinjaTim
yep, images can be deceiving cant they - but my thinking is the fa can now use this as a thing against him, they want the 'squeeky clean'man dont they - 'arry is innocent, but he was soon written off for the job after this, so hopefully 'he' will see it that he no longer wants to work for a nation that was so quick to turn their back on him? he was being raved about all week wasnt he then suddenly last night it was as if he didnt even exist - in england terms...
pompeyrug
Chix: Dont be so naive. He didn't have a cat in hells chance before this latest episode anyway.
Craig Cain
sorry, i disagree - he wil not come out clearer than before, if anything, he will come out less clean, as it is just another time when he has been cought up with the police. wheter or not he was guilty or innocent, he was involved, and i doubt the FA will forget it...
pompeycarpet
Craig Cain, i think that 'arry did/maybe still does have/had a far better chance of getting the england job than people think - thankfully from our viewpoint i dont think it will happen now anyway so im happy!
pompeyrug
Up to his old tricks again is he?
