A rarity for Pompey

In a very rare turn of events for Pompey, two of our stars go head to head tonight as England take on Croatia at Wembley.

We have had the odd international down the years, but rarely have we had two Pompey teammates come up against each other in a top class competitive international game, but we will be seeing this tonight when Pompey captain Sol Campbell comes up against Croatia's golden boy Niko Kranjcar, it should also be against David James too - but it wont...

The importance of this game has taken on an even greater meaning since Israel's last gasp winner over Russia at the weekend, meaning that England need 'only' a point to ensure a place at Euro 2008.

Whoever comes out on top will have bragging rights at the training ground for the next couple of weeks, should it be Croatia Kranjcar will have bragging rights for years to come as this will almost certainly mean England will be eliminated at the qualification stages...

This occurrence might be a novelty to us now, but as we continue to grow as a club we will see this type of battle between teammates become more and more frequent as the years go on - and this will only be a good thing for Pompey, even if it does mean a bit of friendly banter in the dressing room.

I'm still having trouble getting over Jamo's kick in the ** - but it is actually a great thing to have the 2 of them out there on opposing sides, and we must get behind Sol and all the England team tonight.

I really couldn't care less that Jamo is left out and wish we would let it go. I know he is the best keeper in the country, and he knows that we know that. But playing for England seriously affects his form (his two best ever seasons have come since he was dropped from the squad). So why should we risk that? And he is getting old and England should be looking to the future and getting experience for the players who will hopefully be winning us competitions in the years to come. Good luck to Carson, I say.

Having had my Jamo rant, I wanted to add that I'm really excitited to be watchign two of our plays in a top class international clash tonight. I hope Nico has a great game and shines as the star of the loosing team! And it is great to see Sol's immense form and stature being recognised. Hopefully he'll have played with Nico enought to know that the way to stop Nico is to stop him cutting in onto his right foot!

Good point Dan. Not one I necessarily agree with completely but we have our opinions and this site lets you express them without fear of abuse. I do care that players are not selected when thay are clearly the best however - Jamo has worked hard and deserves the chance. But you are right that his best form has come since being dropped.

Cheers EastneyDave (and that is why this site is so good - it would be boring if we all thought the same). You are quite right that it's not fair on Jamo. He does deserve that place. But from a purely selfish Pompey perspective, I'm glad we've got him all to ourselves!

It seems Jamo is on the bench after all tonight - so lets get behind Sol (and sort of behind Krunchy) - 2 Pompey players plus a sub in an England game means we've come a long way!

Good luck to both of them, and i hope they both report back with no injuries.

disgrace to the name football that jamo isnt in the team - although i dont care, as carson will do the job, as will the defence, i would go on strike, and not watch the game. but i will, as kranjcar is playing, who is the greatest footballer i have ever seen - and i would not pass a chance to watch him play. COME ON...(england?).

as much as i might say i dont care what happens tonight becuase i cannot stand spineless steve i do and do want england to win - seeing sol and krunchie on the same pitch - but against each other - will be something special... and jamo has been named on the bench afterall - still not what it should have been but at least it suggests he is still more likely to stay in the squad than robbo, who i now actually feel alittle sorry for tbh!

i do want england to win. i always will, you wont ever stop me. unless they play pompey. but i also want mcclaren to be sacked...which is why the best thing that could possibly happen, is if andorra beat russia, and croatia beat us. that, or a draw would be nice.

I agree with dan, england should look to the future and that's what Carson is, however in the most important match of the qualifiers you dont want a keeper with 2 caps to his name

Totally vindicated in playing Carson, the lad didn't put a foot wrong, it was his bloody hands that couldn't hold a thing

Yes didn't Carson play magnificently in his first (and hopefully last) competitive England start.....

i dont think we should write carson off - he is a fantastic keeper... he just shouldnt have started this game - jamo should have, no two ways about it, and something that i have been banging on about for weeks... altho you cannot hide the horrendous error carson makes - hopefully he can do the same at villa park in a few weeks time!

And even rarer I am pretty sure (need some research) that Niko's goal was the first scored by a Pompey player in a competitive international at Wembley. Need to decide whether Home Internationals count in that though.

the job of an england manager is to pick the best team. not to blood players in. WHAT WAS HE THINKING???? as for niko...what a player! and actually, i was disopointed by luka modric, who didnt seem to get into the game...niko kovac was much better in central midfield...
