The spineless one handed a lifeline

'Son of Sven' Spineless Steve has been handed a lifeline, as have England with our Euro 2008 qualification chances.

We all hoped that Israel would do us a favour this evening but few genuinely believed that they would be able to do it, but they did and right at the death to beat Russia 2-1. Spineless Steve must have had his long spoon out last night when supping with Beelzebub...

A point against Croatia now on Wednesday and England will be going to Euro 2008, something that looked highly unlikely just a few hours ago. Sadly - and I do mean this - the Scots will not be joining us - providing we do not screw things up - as they were eliminated after a brave showing against Italy, a game they won 2-1 at the death.

It looked as though this could be the last England squad that both Sol Campbell and David James would be in, but the chances are these two will be extending their careers into one final hurrah - at least - with England on the big stage, all being well.

I have been behind James for the past 18 months for him to be the England no.1 and although it is probably not going to happen Spineless Steve can ill afford any slip-ups, so I just wish he would go for James over Paul Robinson on Wednesday as I do fear a costly error once again coming from Robinson - but that is for another day!

For now as a nation we can thank Spineless Steve for whatever ritual he might have gone through that has not only given England a lifeline but quite probably saved his job too - that in itself might not be something to be quite as thankful for however...

have croatia played macedonia yet, and if so, did they win? croatia wont be likely to put out a week side - but we SHOULD beat them, in the same way that we SHOULD have beaten everyone else in our group, by at least 3 goals.

yeah croatia lost 2-0 but they are already through

if russia had won, then they wouldnt have been through - so are you sure that they are? and does this mean that we can qualify top of the group now?

If we beat Croatia by two clear goals we can top the group, he is a luck man.

So we need draw to qualify. Thank fck for that. Listened to most of the match on the radio. Torture. Once Russia had scored they were all over Israel. Amazing how they didn't win it. Out of nowhere & with the only decent attack of the second half, Israel score in injury time. Brilliant. Sod spineless, a good day for the English & hopefully keeps the international careers of Jamo & Sol alive.

1 year before the rugb world cup, south afric played england at twickenham. both coaches were at a make or break stage, on the back of a series of poor performances, whichever one lost would probably get sacked. South africa won, and 12 months later, were crowned the best team in the world, having out played all there oponants, beating england in the final. maybe we can emulate south africa? coach narrowly avoids getting sacked, then goes on to win the world cup/european championships...could happen? or is that putting to much faith in a moron?

Ermm its putting way too much faith in a moron pompeycarpet, if Engerland do manage a win against Croatia it will be despite not because of that gormless whippet worrier. Sack the clue dodging **** now please fatty Barwick.

i would bet either way carpet - however we will either need a hell of a lot of luck, or spineless is going to have to really turn things around tho... amazing isnt it we went into today expecting both croatia and russia to win... yet both lost and now incredibly we could quite possibly win the group!

we must have posted at the same time nikolaijns - but i agree with you, either way i do feel we need to get ride of spineless as things will not get any better under him...

just been thinking about it and as storagematt says our qualification 'should' extend jamo and sol's international careers further, but there must also be a really good chance that a 3rd pompey player will be joining them soon... surely glen johnson will be back in the squad shortly - and maybe sean davis might have an outside chance? not forgetting matty taylor of course - if/when he can get back into the side, if he plays well he will stay, which will then bring him right back into the england thinking... if things went well pompey could make up almost 1 5th of the england squad... what a thought eh fellas!

dont push it - but if thinks went REALLY well, pompey could make almost half the england TEAM. but actually, i doubt davis will get called up, as whilst he is excellent in the holding midfielder role, mcclaren would prefer to play king, hargreaves, or carick there, so there is very little chance of it happening. matty taytlo has the potential, but we all know that mclaren is having a love afair with downing, so thats not going to happen - but with richards possibly mooving to centre back, that does open up a place for glenn johnson...

Spineless has (nearly) got out of jail on this one and as long as they don't cock it up on Wednesday we'll have something to look forward to next summer. as for the Pompey players I've a funny feeling we'd have seen the last of Campbell and Jamo after Wednesday as his thoughts will turn to building for next summer and he won't want to take players who he will now considers old ... He's used them to (nearly) get the job done and he will now dump them... He'll have a couple of friendlies to play around and get his squad ready for the summer but I bet you neither of them will feature .. as for Johnson.. maybe he'll get a shot in a friendly.. Davis won't get a look ijn neither will Taylor.. The next best chance we'll get of an England is Defoe .... Once he's signed for us in January ;)

His luck will run out, and knowing him he will make hard work of Friday, urging us to be cautious, just like Scotland did last night!! If Macedonia!! can beat them, then we should bloody murder them, and there should be no excuses if we do not. Get Defoe up front with Crouch, leave Bloody Beckham out and let Wright Phillips and Richards terrorise them down the right.

spineless has chance to redeem himself, so it is down to him to make some changes - not being 'afraid' to offend players along the way, yep this might include sol and jamo but he has tried to write the likes of these 2 off before and we all know he came crawling back... jamo is a player that i will argue the case for all day long, he should play against croatia - but he wont - and then should be the no.1 up to and including euro 2008 and beyond - neither will happen but i dont think he can afford to push him aside again as i have this feeling he will regret it even more this time if he kicks him to touch again... more so than he did last time. sol - he was always the one 1 of the 2 that i could understand more not being in, depening on how dawson goes, how king recovers and so on his time might end again - but i would not write him off...

time to dump the playors who consistently underperform, and give the ones who want to play good football for there country a chance. dont pick playors unless they show passion - so that rules out most top 4 playors - and dont pick the same ******* team that you always do - oh, and appoint me manager, or at least your assistent if you want to win anything.

Just as it was "amazing" that a weakened Israel side beat Russia...it's also not beyond possibility that Croatia will beat England at Wembley. Who knows? If so, maybe the FA will have the guts to review the whole structure of our set-up for the national team. It's nothing short of shambolic.

maybe they should be reviewing the whole strucure of it anyway. we were drawn in one of the weakest qualifying groups, and have struggles do qualify - he fact we could ow finish top is irelevant, as qualification was out of our hands. sack mcclaren, and get big phil in - he knows how to manage a national side.

You sound just like the tabloids who still have it in for him on Sunday. We could quite easily top the group come Wednesday night. Qualifying is over the whole campaign and not over a few results!

we could top the group but we wouldnt deserve it... qualification shouldnt gloss over the fact that he is the wrong man for the job and should still go regardless - no matter what he 'might' achieve with england my feelings will not change on the fella, and should he somehow win euro 2008 - unless he finally changes his ways - it would be more by luck than judgement...

dazza - you are right, BUT, we should have qualified from this group with ease, and the fact that qualificaton was out of our hands just 2 days ago shows how badley mcclaren has messed up. sure we can top the group, but we should have qualified with maximum points.

Well put carpet, i did not realise what difficult teams we were pitched against, we underestimated their fantastic abilty, or were we just crap, poorly coached and underachieving again. Bring back Becks, the Neville brothers, Wes Brown, Stewart Downing and Alan Smith they will make the difference for us!!

our group is a tough group - and the euros are much harder to qualify for than the world cup - but as i said to my mate last night look at our group and look at the group the scots had, which would we have rather have had? the scots did fantastically well to take the italians and french to the wire, yet we've made such a tough job of our group...
