'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Here we go again...

It is a common thought among most football fans, not just Pompey fans that the international break is a pain in the arse - but it just so happens that this current international break has probably come at the right time for us, not that we are on a bad run of form, it has just been a frustrating time so it is not a bad break... so long as all our players come back in one piece!

Even with this said though I would still rather Pompey were playing today - or tomorrow at worse - as a weekend without Pompey playing makes for a hell of a long weekend in my book. If we are playing it also makes you get through the week a little easier knowing that Pompey will be playing at the end of it.

No doubt I will watch the Scots, hoping they can overcome the Italians and will also watch Israel take on Russia - we do not even have an England match to 'enjoy' as this was played last night - nice one Sol Campbell - to enable them to do exactly as we will be - watch Russia in the hope that they lose, at worse do not win. But it is a sorry state of affairs when we are reduced to 'hoping' others can do us a favour...

As much as I might dislike the international breaks I can accept them for the competitive games, and even though the vast majority of England games these days still are not that good I can take these but it is the breaks for these pointless 'friendlies' that we have that gets me.

These friendlies lost their meaning years ago; as my thinking is that a friendly is for trying out new things or new people? Sven Goran Eriksson soon abandoned this concept and concept does not even feature in this equation on these games for 'son of Sven' Spineless Steve - these get togethers under him are a near complete farce, as nothing or no one new is rarely, if ever tried.

These breaks are bad enough, but god only knows what I will do during the summer months without the comfort of a Pompey game if we have to endure this summer without at least seeing England 'crashing out' at a whimper - as seems the norm these days, it will be a hell of a long summer... but at least we will have the thought of seeing Pompey playing in Europe in the 2008/09 season to look forward to!

Anyway, rant over - basically I am not amused that Pompey will not be playing this weekend and next weekend when we go to Birmingham and stuff them cannot get here soon enough for me!

Couldn't agree more.....and wasn't Fridays' game useful for England? Michael Owen will now not be playing against Croatia.... Pointless....utterly utterly pointless. Not to mention I have every sympathy for Allardyce who will no doubt miss Owen for at least a couple of games - we'd have been peed off if Sol picked up an injury in such a game after all.

Sam must be livid, as if they did not have enough problems up at Newcastle. What did last night prove? It just re-enforced the fact that we are not as good as Spineless keeps telling us we are.

Agree with both of you about last night.. complete waste of time on all fronts... I tend to agree with Rug that a weekend without a Pompey game makes you feel a bit like a lost soul.. but at least it means I can get some brownie points in with the missus as she can go Xmas shoppong and I can have the kids ... Hope she gets me a nice present !!!
Chix
As long as Xmas brings us a few points i will be happy, I hope that that Scotland beat Italy, as it will serve me right for laughing when the draw was made, oh how England have let me down, and i always think it will change next game. If Sol and Jammo were not in the squad i would have even less interest.
Owenspompey
thankfully i was at work, so the 'temptation' of watching the game last night was taken away... the only reason that i would have wanted to was to see sol - as i already knew it wouldnt be jamo too... completely pointess and usless friendly, a gamble that hasnt paid off - if we do have a chance to qualify weve now reduced our chances because of owens injury! god, how the scots could be laughing at us big time come wendesday night - even if neither country qualify they will be rightly gloating...
pompeyrug
i dont want anything too special for xmas please Chix :-) yep, you pick up these extra points, as you will possibly lose some from her with the games you will be going to over xmas - hopefully she is understanding of it tho?
pompeyrug
It must have felt really good to have crushed the Austrians so convincingly and come away with no major injury scares!! Who bloody decided to play this pointless game?
Owenspompey
game summary: we only just beat a poor side, which has a load of playors i have never heard of, injuring our only decent striker (i hate rooney), and prooving, once again, that david beckham is a 1 trick pony, and that playing frank lampard and steven gerrard in the same position is stupid. you wouldnt play 4 centre backs along the back 4 would you? oh no, we did against russia...
pompeycarpet
and what a farce that was too eh carpet - playing 4 centre backs is a major reason that we lost to russia... im not putting the blame at lescott's feet - that is firmly laid at spineless steve's door - but had we been playing a recognised left back, which would have been shorey, he would have been out in the left back area where he should have been and we wouldnt have been caught out half as much as we were...
