It's not just about the goals

It's not just about the goals

Tony Adams has said exactly what we have been saying about Dave Nugent in as much that so long as he keeps giving his all - as he did against City last weekend - the rest will take care of itself...

Speaking in The News the Pompey no.2 had words of praise for him: 'David came on and worked very hard for the team, created himself a couple of chances and he was very unfortunate.

'As well as the one that hit the post, I think the second one was going in until Micah Richards got in the way of it.

'But if David keeps doing that, he will carve himself out a career here'.

Obviously in the long run he will be judged by his goals, but so long as he keeps persevering these will eventually come...

Clearly for his own confidence that goal needs to come, but Nugent need look no further than his own team mate Benjani for proof that so long as he keeps working hard and plugging away the fans will never turn on him - and all the signs are pointing towards this being the case.

In fact Nugent has again been speaking to the Pompey site yesterday saying how much he is enjoying life with Pompey and how much he is learning from the likes of Kanu and Benjani.

Also, in other news Marc Wilson has again left Pompey for another loan spell, this time with Luton for an initial month long stay - after a loan with Bournemouth earlier this season.

Wilson is highly rated by Pompey, rated enough for the club to have given him a new contract in the summer but although he is training with the 1st team regularly he has not been able to make the breakthrough yet.

Clearly it is going to hard for him to make his breakthrough, but if he is good enough this will eventually come - at 20 years of age he still has plenty of time ahead of him.

I think Nugent will be a Favouraite of the Fratton Faithfull, so i wish him all the luck in the world with getting his first goal. Tony is right, we dont expect goals just a good attitude and work rate, which i dont think you falter with Nugent. I would think he is coming on leaps and bounds on the training pitch, and when he gets unleashed properly, the others wont know whats hit them...

Cheers Midge, he will be a good signing for us as he appears to be just getting on with his work on the training ground, in preperation for when he does get his chance, and we all know he will be needed soon. At least he is not whinging about being in the south of the country far from home etc. I just hope he does the business when he is given his chance.

he has kept his head down, plugged away and not moaned - he had tried hard, but maybe alittle too hard, which went against him... he seemed a much, much more relaxed fella against city and it showed - more of this in the coming months and there is no way he will be leaving pompey, no way at all... his efforts will be rewarded with goals, which will be rewarded with plaudits which will in most probability see a 'benji scenario' all over again!

Look how long it took Benji to score & we didn't all love him to bits in the early months. Time is a precious commodity in football & sometimes you don't get enough of it.

Nuge will come good I'm sure and Pompey is the place to do it - We (the supporters) have shown time and again that if somebody works hard and plugs away we will give them all the encouragement and time they need and this is what Nuge is getting from within and outside of the club (except for the odd paper here and there) He'll come through .. we and he know it really .. it's just a question of time.. Patience my flock patience !

You are right when you think about how Benjani was playing and look at him now. Nugent is a quality striker and I am sure a few goals will help restore his confidence.

Evans - Right back or right midfield?

Drew Talbot and Adam Buxton are fit but Gareth Evans continues to fill in at right back. Should this change? If so where would it leave the battle between Evans and Carl Baker?
