The Pompey chimes

Having spoken about the atmosphere at Fortress Fratton, again after something that was started in the forum - here - by paultsmouth about favourite songs, chants, call them what you will the grand daddy of them all, with there being none better has to be the Pompey chimes.

Every time I hear that it sends a shiver down my spine and I have heard it thousands of times in my life, yet I never tire of it. Hearing it in the crowd, on the TV, radio or whatever it still sounds as fantastic as the first time I heard it, which is a memory and feeling I will never forget.

20,000 people singing 'play up Pompey, Pompey play up' has to inspire you and if it does not motivate you on the pitch nothing will - it would be amazing to hear it from a players point of view, how special would that be?

Until recently I had a prehistoric mobile phone, but after the Reading game I dropped and broke the screen, but I did not care we had just won 7-4!

Clearly that was a sign that a new phone was needed and I got it - even thought I initially replaced it with a slightly newer, yet still prehistoric phone we had laying around the house - so one of the first things I did was get the Pompey chimes as a tone on my phone, a proper fans singing it thing and whenever my phone goes off now I still get that same shiver down my spine and goose bumps just hearing the phone tone!

There is more though, just hearing the Pompey chimes now also makes me feel immensely proud of Pompey, who we are and where we now stand.

I have always been proud and unashamed to support Pompey, but just hearing this chant/song now not only sends that tingle down the spine but also makes me feel even prouder every single time...

PLAY UP POMPEY!

The chimes are ours, and wherever you go football fans know who we are and that we are a unique set of supporters. I reckon we deserve all the plaudits we get for the numbers that go, the distance we travel and the noise that we make, it is sometimes a shame that only John Westwood is mentioned as a Pompey Fanatic, there are many more like him who share his passion and loyalty and i count myself and the Pompey lads from up here amongst them.

Yes indeed, the Pompey Chimes lives on within all of us. One of my greyhounds by that name did not live up to it but successful ones were POMPEY GRAY (34), POMPEY GOVERNOR (8), POMPEY BLUE (1) and POMPEY FOX (1) - all winners. As for POMPEY CHIMES I think he's still running around above the clouds somewhere...

My favourite chant was 'He's here, he's there. he's every f***ing where, Vince Hilaire, Vince Hilaire'

In my early days the Chimes was not sung much. The young lads who were then the 'choir' thought it old fashioned but occasionally it would rear its head. It is best when sung by all four sides slightly out of time because that creates the echo/eerie effect. And it is also the oldest football song in the world dating back to at least 1901.

The chimes are ours but I still love Portsmouth 'til I die.

yep portsmouth til i die is also another fantastic one to here...

i dont know if it has been sung away from the fortress but a new one doing the rounds i believe is in the style of the kaizer chiefs 'never been this far away from home'... it goes 'oh my god i cant believe this, we've never been this good away from home' - which would be more than fitting for us this season!
