Another sign of the Pompey vision

Another sign of the Pompey vision

The FA are bidding to bring the 2018 world cup finals to England and Peter Storrie has told The News how he wants Pompey's proposed new state of the art stadium to stage some games: 'At the moment there is a lot that needs clarifying but we will be asking the question.

'We will have a chat with the FA to see what criteria and minimum capacity they are looking for from prospective football grounds.

'As I understand it, they are going to need 10 stadiums and quite clearly we will want to be part of that. The Horsea Island ground would be perfect.

'There are a lot of people feeling confident England can get the 2018 World Cup but the formal application is not for a long while yet.

'Until that goes in, it's a bit of a guess situation what the criteria for the grounds is going
to be.

'It's no good saying it's going to be 40,000 and it turns out to be 50,000. We just have to wait for a while to see what is going to happen.

'But if the FA are going to have a World Cup venue in the south we will definitely be putting ourselves forward'.

Supposing that the new ground is completed by 2011 as planned - and I have faith this will finally happen after so many previous disappointments - then we would have to compete with other more established clubs but Storrie believes we could do it.

He has also revealed how Pompey will be making moves to have an England U21 international staged at Fortress Fratton at some point in the future - now that some improvements have been made to the ground it should be suitable for such an event.

I know all this is all hypothetical, but just to hear the thoughts that Pompey could stage, or at least will be looking to stage a world cup match is amazing and further indication of just how far we are hoping to go as a club and how serious we are.

Wow that could be good World Cup football in Pompey - I relish the thought of seeing the USA v Trinidad & Tobago ... (although having said that there would bound to be some premiership players playing in that, or any other game in the World Cup come to think of it) Seriously... if it were to happen it'll be great and put Pompey on the world wide map again which can't be all bad. But first things first ... let's get the bl00dy thing built .. then we can stage whatever events we want ... Maybe even a Take That concert in honour of the players ... or then again not!. An under 21 game at the Fortress would be good though... Might get to see Cranie play again !

as much as i love the fortress it couldnt even stage a subbuteo world cup match, let alone a proper world cup match so it is the proposed new stadium that is being spoken about mate... it is due to be ready - hopefully - but 2011 and is now meant to be in port solent, the rich part of town :-)

Speaking about the new ground, I reckon we will see it either on Tipner (by the greyhound stadium) or Tipner ranges. The Horsea Island site has a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) associated with it, and the tree huggers will try and block the build because of that.

tbh, as i have said before - within reason - i do not mind where it is, so long as we get it... i am confident we will get it this time tho, wherever it might be...

Get the stadium built first, worry about hosting mouth watering matches like UAE v Angola or South Korea v Saudi Arabia later....

how much would i love to see pompey playing in a wonderfull stadium??? the amount pompey are planning on spending surey will make it one for the best stadia in the country - even if the capacity is not massive...but then, would 45 000 fans really want to see T&T play slovakia?

I hope the stadium is still on the edge of the sea. Although the original location blocked up the good view of the spinnaker tbh.
