'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Papa Bouba Diop Happy At Pompey

Portsmouth midfielder Papa Bouba Diop explains why he's delighted to be at Fratton Park after being given the cold shoulder at Fulham.

'I feel that I am playing my best football since arriving in England. I was getting a bit stale at Fulham; the team, in my opinion, wasn't really going anywhere and I needed a new challenge to revitalise my game. When Lawrie Sanchez took over at the club, he made it abundantly clear I wasn't a part of his plans, and that was all the incentive I needed to move on.

'Some might have seen Portsmouth as a side-ways step, but once I'd met with Harry, heard his plans and looked at the squad in place, I knew this was a club going places. We've proved that already. What I also like is the African influence we have here. The likes of Benjani, Sulley Muntari, Kanu, John Utaka and Djimi Traore have all helped me settle in. With Africans you always get a strong work ethic, which we have at the club. But it would be wrong to single out just those players. There is a spirit and belief running right through this club.'

legend! shame that are unbeaten run with him in the team has ended.
PompeyGleamer
A class act.
NinjaTim
he has certainly proved quite a few of us wrong hasnt he - i think he has been fantastic on the whole and again looks every inch the top class player that saw him linked with arsenal a few years back.
pompeyrug
In fact I expect he feels like a piece of the furniture. Boom boom!
eastneydave
ha, remember when it was transfer deadline day, and evceryone was ridiculing harry for selling G'ON for Diop, proves us wrong, again!
PompeyGleamer
Yes, I'm guilty of raising an eyebrow when we signed him, but he's been a revelation!
tracyc
ye, i was very speculative of HRs decision but he proved every doubter wrong. shame we didnt get him all them years ago.
PompeyGleamer
are you performing all week dave :-)
pompeyrug
Dave, bad joke, stick to answering our questions, Diop is the man and has turned out to be another Harry signing who has proved to be a good one, he seems to enjoy playing with Muntari as well doesnt he.
Owenspompey
Sorry boys couldn't resist the pun. Back to the day job I suppose ;-)
eastneydave
ha, yes I think the partnership with diop and muntari is exciting!
PompeyGleamer
I did say we needed 2 give the guy a chance when a few were gettin the grumps about him comin...& now hes showing us how good he can be!!! I love his game, being big strong & pretty good with the ball really helps are "back bone" what with Sol & then DJ behind him!!...to be honest, Im totally glad to have him!!!
CharlieChimes
yep, however would you prefer G'ON in the side?
PompeyGleamer
Nope!!...ok, Utaka hasnt been all that of late, but I still feel O'neil would struggle gettin into the side. So, when yu ask me Gary O or Pa Pa...I say Pa Pa, because we are clearly seeing the best midfield pompey have seen for some years....and as sad as it is...its without Gary O!
CharlieChimes
suppose, and without matty!
PompeyGleamer
diop and o'neil are different playors - it isnt a strait swap! to put gary in, that means taking utaka out - which i wouldnt do - or putting him in the middle, where he is neither as strong as diop, or has the passing ability of kranjcar or sulley. i guess he could have slotted in for davis - but that would not have made much of a difference.
pompeycarpet
So after all that anger, im glad G'ON has gone, to a club where he will get regualr first team action and wont be on the bench.
PompeyGleamer
How big is this guy, ive heard people say he's huge!!!! no gay comment their either!
will it ever happen
Top guy, let's hope he keeps it going all season. Yep, I have been impressed so far.
storagematt
Will it.. Bouba will be 30 on 28 January is 1.94metres tall (about 6ft 41/2in in old money) now that is big and he is 13st 1lb. He scored the first goal of the 2002 World cup when Senegal beat France 1-0.
eastneydave
players come and go, i doubt he will be here in 2 seasons, but harry will, and im not bothered if harrys in charge because you know he will bring in better quality at least, muntari is only 22, and kranjcer is 20 somethin aswell!
PompeyGleamer
Pa pa has done well, and long may it continue ... I'm not sure (like carpet) whether you can compare him and Gary O as ... well for the reasons carpet said ! I'm not sure about a couple of his comments though ..'Some saw Pompey as a sidewayys move .. From Fulham !!! get real .... and also Africans have a good work ethic... Pa pa & Munners I'd agree with but I'm not sure that applies to Utaka (recently) or Kanu (generally)
Chix
yep, i agree, he did say a couple of crazy comments
PompeyGleamer
pompey a sidways move? well, i guess if your diomansy kamara, then its a backwards move ("fulham to finish above pompey") - but to everyone else, its a move from a side that narrowly missed relegation, to a side that narrowly missed UEFA cup - and has improvd since then!
pompeycarpet
agreed carpet, if it is a sideways move then there must have been a few sharp turns to avoid obstacles to get to his destinaton as - with all due respect - we are much better than fulham...
pompeyrug
as much as i loved o'neil and was gutted to see him go, altho i cannot say i am now happy i think 'arry has been more than proved right - altho when utaka goes in january will be interesting to see who plays on the right... yep papa smurf and o'neil cannot be compared - it wasnt 1 to replace the other but in all honesty i dont think that 'arry ever really fancied o'neil and he probably did do well to play a good couple of years of near ever present football...
pompeyrug
I've always rated him, ever since he scored from thirty yards against us!
merlin
He had a good header yesterday, but came off the newcastle players hands in the second half, should of been a pen. davis also had a free header and kanu had a great chance late on.
PompeyGleamer
Great performance from Diop again yesterday, we will miss him against City when he is suspended, but he will be back bursting to go, he has been a great signing for the club, and reminds me of Viera.
Owenspompey
eastnaydave, sounds like me then appart from im not a footballer. Going to be a tough game today.
will it ever happen
Is that wishful thinking 'will it'! .... Interestingly going back to eastneydaves comment - That goal he scored for Senegal (although I didn't know who he was at the time) was fantastic... not in a skillful sense but I will never forget the faces of the (then) World Champions at the final whistle - To say they were humiliated was an understatement - well done Papa
