Pompey's name on the league cup?

Pompey will win this season's league cup! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from pompeyrug's poll are thoughts I completely share.

I have had this strong belief that we will win the league cup this season, and it appears that I am not alone.

So far we have been using our squad fully to get us through, but my thinking is that if we get past Blackburn tomorrow - which will be far from easy - then from the quarter finals onwards we will start seeing more of the regular first team starters, this is not to say that the players coming in are not good enough, as they certainly are and most, if not all will play a major part in our season as it continues to unfold.

Some people look at the league cup and think 'its only the league cup', but when you do not win many trophies you take what you can get and I would be delighted with a trip to Wembley and a league cup final win - lets not forget this gives us that ticket into the uefa cup…

What the poll asked - How far will we go in the league cup?

How you voted - We will win it! 29%, 4th Round - lose to Blackburn 26%, Quarter finals 15%, Semi finals 15%, Final 15%

Current Poll - We go on the road again this weekend for our latest league match, with a current run of three straight away wins - can we do it again?

It is almost certain that Harry Redknapp will stick with the lone striker - again I can still accept this for away games but would still really like to play two strikers when at home - but who will it be, that is what pompeyrug wants to know with this - 'it will almost certainly be '1 up front' against the barcodes - but who?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

Not too sure on this one. Priority is the league & I think it will be a tough game with Blackburn. It may depend on fields the strongest team. They havn't lost since we beat them & another single goal may settle this one.

How fantastic would it be to go to Wemberley with Pompey? And unlike the FA cup final, where many tickets are given to corporate sponsors and the like, ordinary fans like me get a chance at tickets for the league cup final. Pompey hasn't been to Wembley in my lifetime and its overdue. And theres UEFA cup qualification. Liverpool in the final please!

blackburn is going to be a real tough task tomorrow, but one i am looking forward to - even more so as i will be there :-) if we can overcome this hurdle, then we are only 2 wins away from wembley...

...so basicly, we are only 3 wins away from wembly! IF we can win this, and get a good draw - THEN anything could happen. and i would LOVE to go to see pompey play in the best stadium in the world.

Anything other than a win tomorrow should be looked at as an upset. Blackburn are a team who finished 2 spots behind us last term and who (I still can't figure out why) are enjoying a Uefa cup hurrah this year which ought to have been ours via the Intertoto. The " we're only Pompey " line is wearing a bit thin Arry. We've got the players and they're getting paid accordingly. it's now a matter of getting the most out of them on a week in week out basis. 2-1 Pompey.

Harry has been targeting the carling cup. blackburn are NOT engoying uefa cup football - having bee knocked out - so they could also be targeting it. BUT, i think that we should win it, as it is at home - irrespective of oposition, i would say we should win.

Toronto4Pompey is right about Harry's lines wearing thin, but to be fair to HR he normally only trots that one out when he's made a tactical fuq up. No automatic spot for UEFA now (i think ???) so it cant be a priority over say 4th maybe 5th in the league, but nice to win a real trophy all the same.

I think it's next year that they're taking away the League Cup winner's Uefa Cup spot Russ. HR sure made a few tactical fups v West Ham though. Hopefully he'll read those that played the riot act, a la Brian Clough.

yep, im pretty sure the league cup winner gets that uefa cup place this season... 'arry said in the news yesterday that he was putting out a strong side, so he is cerainly in it to win it now isnt he. if we do put out a near full strength side, we should beat blackburn - as good as they are.

Harry just put out a strong team and give it our best shot, i am coming from Liverpool for this game, and it is another days leave from work and back home at about 0300, so dont do anything other than give it a go, and then we can really dream of Wembley.

Too true 4me... Not the best display in the world was it - I'll have to move my Wembley hotel booking to May instead now !! - It's a far better competition to win anyway.. The FA Cup !!

poor 1st half cost us the cup. Not Taylor not playing first half, not Nugents mis-header, not Pdero being under par, not Benji missing a penalty on saturday and lacking confidence. none of those factors are the reason, we just played poorly in first half. We werent that good on Saturday, and even at Wigan we were not the Pompey we have been. Concellation is, if this is our bad spell, and we lost out the league cup, but still picked up 4 points from last 2 poor games, then i'll settle for that as opposed to us losing week after week which we used to when we had a bad spell?

Another one we got wrong then. I opted for quarter finals wrong as well.

Midge, that is a very good point mate - winning or drawing when playing well was not the pompey of old, we certainly would not have only lost 1 out of 3 when we played badly would we...
