Muntari targets a top 4 finish

Sulley Muntari has told sky sports news that he believes we could challenge for a top 4 place, well at least he cannot see why not: 'we can do it, we can be in fourth position we can be there, fourth, fifth we can do it.

'At the moment we are winning games and the way I see it with training and commitment, we can do it'.

To hear a Pompey player openly expressing the thought that he thinks we could finish in the top 4 of the premier league is absolutely amazing, I never thought I would hear such words said - but these words that are being said could be true.

It is a sign of how far we have come, that people are not only talking of, but actually expecting a uefa cup finish via the league - and I do not necessarily mean Pompey fans, the media and pundits are openly expressing this, with many, including Alan Shearer starting to say that we might just be able to do what Muntari thinks - finish in the top 4.

There is still a long way to go in the season, but after a quarter of it - yep its over a quarter gone - we are right up there, so providing we can not suffer too much of a 'blip' when we do go through a rough patch you never know?

Should we still there or thereabout after 20 matches, belief will grow, if we are still in with a chance after 30 then this belief will grow into expectation. To be honest I would be more than content with a uefa cup place, but would I turn down a champions league place? Of course I would not...

Yep the argument of being 'ready for it' would then crop up, but let's cross this bridge if and when we get to it.

Just to wind you all up I'm gonna 'as usual' insist we concentrate on safety first ..... but even I am starting to get a little carried away - If we win today and the Gunners beat Liverpool then we could be in the top four .. not for just a few hours but for.. well who knows how long... but if we are to have aspirations of UEFA (or dare I saw it Champions League) we should treat West Ham with the utmost respect and then smash them out of sight - Play up Pompey

I still think anything between 6-11 & we have a blinder of a season. The top 4 will be the same & then its a group of us, Man City, Blackburn, Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle, & Spurs. That's the top 11, in what order heaven knows.

im not going to write it off - i thought the thought we could finish that high even a few weeks back was crazy, it might be unlikely but it could happen... i do feel that someone new will break into the top 4 this season tho, so why not us :-)

Not after a game like todays we won't. We need to be taking all the chances we get and to let Benjani take that penalty was ridiculouys. I know he is hoping for the golden boot award but that miss has probably knocked his confidence and would probably have been converted if Muntari or Niko took it. Even Kanu should have been before Benni! Shame PUP

Matt - you don't fancy us hammers in the top 11 then? I reckon we can't be too far off Blackburn, Villa and Newcastle.

after todays showing it proves we still have a long way to go... i still cannot believe benji stood up to take the penalty! i had the same feeling when he did as i did when kanu stepped up against liverpool.

tbh adam from what ive seen of teams this season west ham aren't far off villa and newcastle - if at all, but blackburn could be the team for us all to catch?

Hughes is doing a good job - and not may premiership fans would complain about having Bentley and Gamst-Pederson putting in crosses for McCarthy for their team.

i think that blackburn and everton are our main threat, everton started bad last season and came up trumps towards the end but I think villa and newcastle are to inconsistent and west ham arent a european side!

We proved yesterday that we are a long way from top 6 or even top 8, i hope Harry tears into them for a bloody poor effort, they were there for the taking and but for Salano's poor finishing we would have lost, Newcastle will be looking forward to our visit if we play like that next week.

a long way from top 6? its only the top 2/3 you expect never to have off days, and when playing against a side of equal callibre, you expect the game to be close. we beat blackburn away remeber, so it is not all bad news - and could be a good wake up call. but our defence is (at last) doing what it should be doing - with so many clean sheets!

yep, i think jamo will retire with a large gap on other goalkeepers wanting to break his record!

The defence played well, and Distin is an inspiration, I thought Hermann showed Bellamy he would not tolerate his petulance. We just need to get back on the goals scoring trail especially at home when teams come to hit us on the break as opposed to having a go at us.
