A West Ham point of view - Part 1

A West Ham point of view - Part 1

What made you support West Ham mate?
I grew up in a Spurs supporting family, but unlike the rest of my family I had committed no sins in a previous life and so escaped that bind... And West Ham beat Man Utd when I was 6. I was sold.

Are you happy with how your season is going so far?
After last season (And 2003; And the 2 years spent in the Championship), being mid-table in the top flight is a treat. What's more we've won away from home - twice!

Curbishley had a difficult time for a while last season, but he kept you up - how do you think he is doing?
He's doing alright. I like he fact we've only had 11 managers in 100 years (12 if we include Sir Trev) and would be gutted if we were to start chopping and changing like so many clubs do. Sometimes though, he makes some odd decisions. The club need to stick with him for a few years and let him develop his own team.

How do you rate his signings so far? Although he has been unlucky with many of them getting injured!
Bellamy is a great player for a club of our stature. I suspect Dyer and Ljungberg will prove pretty handy too. We have been unlucky with injuries but we've bought players with a bit of previous in this regard. Who couldn't predict an injury for Dyer on the day he signed?

Will he need more in January - and will he get them?
The money is there. Do we need them? Whilst you can always improve a squad, if we signed another striker in the Ashton / Bellamy price range, could we really keep 3 of them happy? I can't see Andy Johnson wanting to warm the bench at Upton Park.

Who is the West Ham danger man that Pompey should watch?
Bellamy (whilst Ashton is out)

How do you reckon West Ham will go this season?
In the middle of the mid table. 9th to 11th.

What about Pompey?
In the Uefa cup or very close.

If you could take any Pompey player from our squad and put him in yours, who would it be and why?
Glen Johnson would be welcomed back. Papa Bouba Diop would be pretty handy as would Benjani's goals.

Go on - who is going to win, Pompey or West Ham?
I hate to say it, but Portsmouth. I'd be delighted with a point.

Great to meet you Adam, i reckon you will give us a real test on Saturday, and if we dont keep a close eye on Bellamy we could be in trouble. The games between us are usually good ones as we both seem to give it a go when we play each other. Hope to see you ate the game on Saturday night.

good interview that, i am really glad that wigan approached me last week as if they hadnt i wouldnt have even thought about making a pre match q&a with the opponents a regular feature as i will now :-) i enjoyed reading it, in particular the bit where he concedes that pompey might win! there is another - part 2 - from the other vital west ham fella being added tomorrow...

Who's going to win 'Wigan or Pompey'? Didn't we beat them already? ;) Nice to get a visiting fans opinion, and also nice to see someone from outside the club getting so excited about Benji's goals this season.
24/10/2007 10:04:00
well spoted - you dont get a prize tho :-) benji is earning the plaudits he deserves isnt he.

Nice one Adam - Like Owens I too think it'll be a close game on Saturday if the real West Ham turn up but if they don't I'd be a little worried about your back four if they give Benji & big bad John Utaka the space they gave Kenwyn Jones on Sunday. Nice to see a fan accept mid table as success too... far too often supporters of clubs who have one good season start believing anything and everything is possible.. you only have to look at the Hammers last season to see that it can turn very quickly. Finally, I am soo pleased Aston aint playing, although as you say Bellamy will have to be watched... are you reading Sol?
24/10/2007 12:11:00
Ashton being injured is a big bonus for us, as Carlton Cole is not as good a player, but we have the pace at the back to deal with Bellamy. I hope we use the real pace of Utake on Saturday, he is so quick and could be areal threat to McArtney or Neill. Is Kanu in the squad?
24/10/2007 13:31:00
Cheers to you Adam. Bellamy looks the danger man. One thing to ask Hammers do you feel about Bowyer? Nobby could be a good buy for you.
24/10/2007 15:30:00
it doesnt look like kanu will make it this weekend mate - i like the fella but tbh im not to bothered as this gives benji the chance to carry on playing and also leaves nuge with a chance too, albeit a remote one...
24/10/2007 16:12:00
Bowyer has been surprisingly good this season. He's not a winger though. It's probably his best season (so far) since Leeds were good - and that's going back some!

tbh i dont like bowyer but if he is in the kind of form that he showed during his best years with leeds then he is doing well - he should have scored his header against sunderland tho shouldnt he...
