Harry's strongest ever Pompey squad

Harry's strongest ever Pompey squad

Harry Redknapp has told The News how he rates the current Pompey squad as the strongest that he has ever had during his time with us: 'I think all round now it certainly would be the strongest squad I've had at anytime since I have been at Portsmouth.

'When I left the first time around I thought we had a good squad with players like Yakubu, Arjan De Zeeuw and Steve Stone playing very well for me, but I think this is a stronger all-round squad, definitely'.

I do not think that there is much doubt, that in terms of overall squad quality and depth - even if some areas are maybe not as strong as some would like - this is the best that we have had not only in Redknapp's time but for many years full stop…

We have had some great players over the years, sometimes a few of them at once but so much was expected of them and perhaps others were lacking their quality, with this showing. But we now have genuine quality all over the park, not only this but the players are playing as a team, with the players of a high enough quality in reserve to fill you with confidence if they had to come in too.

As said these players in reserve, that cannot get in the team, are players that I have no problems with coming in if they have to, with it being my thinking they will not let us down at all, also my thinking that we will not be any less strong than we were as a result of them having to come in, arguably even stronger - but at the end of the day it is a team game!

To be honest I have never had as much faith in a squad of players as I do now and really do not expect us to lose any match. Clearly we will lose some, but I do not go into the matches, even with 'the big boys' thinking 'we will lose today, but that is acceptable' like I once did. Yep, it may still be acceptable when we do but I am not prepared to 'write off' matches any longer.

I may be over optimistic sometimes with my belief that we will beat teams at times, but this is due the faith I have in the team now and how good I think the squad is - and it can still get better yet, and probably will in January.

At the moment - all being well nothing else will change - the only change that we look like we will have to make at the weekend will be an enforced one, with Sean Davis suspended Pedro Mendes looks set to step up to the plate - now who would have expected a few months ago that Mendes would be on the outside looking in, along with the likes of Matty Taylor and so on.

The only problem with having such quality on the bench is keeping them happy, but providing we continue to move forward as we are this will bring success and the more successful you are the more you need this squad, so players will want to be a part of this and will accept this as the way it is - you only have to look at the most successful teams to see this.

The sky really is the limit for Pompey and I will enjoy getting as carried away as I can for as long as I can!

It surely is the greatest pompey SQUAD of all time. So exciting to be a fan nowadays. Who will come in for Sean Davis? If it's Pedro will Sean walk back in on his return? Or will it be Hughsie?? so many options, great innit!

Storage, i'm with you, as i said in my KMKY article, i would love to see silverware presented to pompey at wembly, and this years league cup presents a fantastic opportunity to get there.

Without doubt the strongest squad that i can remember seeing or even reading about. They have to achieve a top 6 position sometime and i think if we can get through January without any major trauma then we should be able to push on. Harry and Tony should be praised for the way they have developed this squad and we can only dream of what they may go on to achieve. If we could add one or two quality players during the opening of the transfer window that could boost us as well.

Not sure about of all time, least we forget the great team that won back to back championships 48-49 & 49-50. But for sure since & in our lifetime. When you think of the dire we watched 10 years ago & the excitement we had a staying up at Huddersfield & Bradford & look at us know, a bl00dy world away.

Matt the Championship side was without doubt the best in England but now we are looking a bigger stage - Europe or even the world. The 48-50 side was all locals, ex navy or free transfers and they gelled. This side has great players from all over the world. Of course we cannot compare because of the near 60 years difference but would Duggie Reid replace Benjani or Jimmy Dickinson replace Sol Campbell?

Well put Dave, the championship winning team was obviously a great team, but this is a different life, and we have to be honest enough to say that this team looks to have the potential to take us to a lofty position in the most difficult league in the world, which is why all these superstars want to play here.

yea i think if you look back at the last 40 odd years and probably more there is not too much of a team to celebrate or admire. spose that is why i am not particularly for tradition when it comes to pompey, all i heard for the 1st 25 years of my pompey life was "pompey is all about tradition aint it" and my response was normally "yea but what have we won". So i think harry is right, cry, god, for Harry and Uefa cup spot i say.

Hang on fellas.. Let's not get caried away..This sure is by far the best Pompey Squad I can remember and it is diffiuclt to see who wouldn't be needed at some stage of the season - But is it really that good compared to those teams around (or supposedly meant to be around) us? The squad can be and needs to be improved continually and as good as they are I can generally find a couple of better players in each position from outside the top four - What would we give for Michael Owen up front, Micah Richards at right back or say, Gareth Barry in midfield - Don't get me wrong we are good and getting better but we're not exactly brimming with 'World' or in some case 'European' Class ..... Well not yet anyway !! - As most of you have said let's enjoy what we have but I think we should also keep our feet firmly on the floor as well - We haven't acheived anything yet... Although the Carling Cup does have our name on it this year ... The more I think of it, the more I agree with Rug and 4me
