Nugent rumours return - again!

Nugent rumours return - again!

Why can the media just not leave David Nugent alone? They may have for a while, but today's news of the world claims that Derby will make a £7m move for him in January.

Virtually since the minute that he arrived he has had the boot put to him whenever possible, but why? He cannot be considered a flop as he has hardly featured recently - but even when he has got on he has always looked lively enough for me, showing enough to suggest he has plenty to offer Pompey, would you fellas not agree?

Maybe in his early showings he was trying too hard, but although he might not be young young anymore, he is still young enough to have plenty of time ahead of him and can only be learning from the players around him.

To be honest I would like to see him playing, but with the lone striker being deployed by Harry Redknapp more often than not and this working, with this being Kanu firstly and now Benjani - with the latter in fantastic form, goalscoring form too at that - things cannot really be changed can they? He will need to remain patient, wait for the chance and take it when it does come - and it will.

My thinking is that selling him anyway would be a pointless exercise. Yep, most admit that a new striker in January would be wanted, but what benefit would there be in selling a striker just to bring another in, why not keep Nugent and if another striker really is needed get him as well? The argument can be that we will need to sell to buy, but the indication is that Sasha Gaydamak is prepared to bankroll a new striker arrival anyway, as a 'reward' for our fine start to the season.

With all this said should Derby seriously offer £7m for a fella that did not even cost us this amount it could prove too good to refuse! But do I honestly think Derby would offer such an amount? I would say no.

Personally I really do think that Nugent has plenty to offer not only Pompey but also England in the future so I really hope that he is not sold - as I have said plenty of times before.

We are looking to build a squad, not dismantle it so as much as I would accept some players have to go I really do not see why any should have to go in January - some may decide they want to go though, but the thoughts constantly emanating from Nugent are that he does not want to be one of them…

Dont understand paying proper loads of money for a player and not playing him. Either get him on Harry, or cash in on him. Controversial? yes, but the longer he goes un-noticed in the shop window, the lower his value will go. Personally i want to see him given a chance.

i really do want to see him playing and am a massive fan of playing 2 strikers but they way 'arry is doing it is working isnt it, so until it stops - which i hope is some time away as much as i do like 4-4-2 - or we do go back to 4-4-2, or some other formation that has 2 out and out strikers up top it has to be benji doesnt it - and if kanu comes back in ahead of benji i will personally brain 'arry as benji is flying and offers everything that kanu does in that lone role and more... i know this probably isnt the way 'arry would see it but nuge must be the 2nd in line behind benji now - kanu has been out, nuge hasnt, he has waited patiently so the next to get a chance surely has to be nuge...

Thats the problem when a team is flying you can't get in the side. Fringe players have to wait. Pedros patience will pay off next week when Davis is suspended, Kanu and Nugent will just have to wait or be impressive against Blackburn in the Carling Cup.

On the subject of the NOW rumour 7 million is a lot for a club like Derby to amble on one player saving them and they would have to be in touch with clubs above them to make such an escape realistic.

I am sure that Derby will buy in the window, as they could not afford to be relegated straight away, but i reckon we will buy again before we sell, and Nugent will,be allowed to go if we bring in a striker. We still have to get through January and the loss of our African players and i am sure the management team are planning for this eventality. Seven million is a lot of money towards a new striker, but Nugent should be given the chance to prove himself in the Premiership

The funny thing is, he is more likely to get a start in January with Kanu & Utaka away in the ANC. Unless of course we get an offer to cover what we paid for him or/and we buy someone else. Little point in playing him or anyother player when the team is flying. He is pro being paid, he has to be patient.

Im suprised anyone would pay 7 mil for him...

Hang on fellas we are talking about an article in the News of the World so £7m has probably just been plucked out of the air ! Assuming though, just for arguement that Derby had that kind of money would they spend it in the knowledge that they may go down ? I can't think of a club who has splashed out truck loads on one player to save their premiership status so (Dave's point is extremely valid) There's then the question of his wages ... I know he's not on a 'top class' salary at Pompey as he was (accordingly to his Dad - Sorry had to get it in) one of Preston's lowest paid as he had a clause linking him back to his contract at Bury) anyway although not highly paid at Pompey I suspect Pompey's low to mid range salaries will still be a lot higher that what Derby, looking relegation in the face, will want to pay. Finally, after all this I don't want him to go, he will break into the team at some point and he will be a star for Pompey - I just thibk it might take longer than we (or he) thinks... and I still beleive we'll keep him and buy another..
22/10/2007 07:38:00
....... but just a thought... If we continue our good run and he can't get into the team because of the formation and Benji's form, does anybody think there's any mileage in loaning him out (just for a month) say in December just to get him match fit for January when he is most likely to be needed ?.... If it is done positively it could be a good thing for all concerned...
22/10/2007 07:41:00
i hope that we do keep him - if we also buy another that will be a bonus, kanu isnt a spring chicken is he 31/32 isnt he altho benji says he grew up with him as his hero and he is 29 so can kanu really be that young? nugent is what 22/23 - very much one not only for the present but the future too so the benefits of keeping him and gaining another striker could tell as early as next season, should kanu not get his 20 games... the loan idea isnt really a bad one, but when does the loan window close for championship sides? tbh tho i would still rather he stayed here but games bring practice, practice brings goals and goals bring confidence - its not the same in the reserves is it...
