'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A 'Latics' point of view

What made you support Wigan mate?
I support the Latics because I was born in Wigan, simple as I've supported from the non-league days so I've seen it all. By the way Wigan to us old timers refers to the Egg Chasing lot. We are the Latics and we hate Wigan more than you hate your south coast friends.

Are you happy with how your season is going so far?
Superb start to the season then we were hit with suspensions and injuries to key players Heskey, Landzaat, Valencia, Kilbane and Sibierski have all been missing and a squad of our size cant take that. Hopefully we can pick up again once they are all back. So in answer am happy at the start, mm, yes...and no.

Many wrote off Hutchings - how do you think he is doing?
Hutch is doing well with what he's got. We are playing football again something we didn't do last season and like I said we've been hit by missing key players recently. We really needed a change from Jewell for both club and manager, but he'll always be a legend.

How do you rate his signings so far?
Signings superb, when we signed Bramble I thought here we go, but he is absolutely awesome and quickly become a fans favourite. Melchiot is class at the back and organises the defence superbly. Koumas has brought a touch of flair to the team and he aint afraid to have a pop at goal. Sibierski started off like a house on fire but he's been carrying a hamstring injury and missed the last couple of games, but again surprised how well he settled in. Not too impressed with Bent.

Will he need more in January - and will he get them?
Hutch will defo need more in January but our chairman likes us to operate with a first eleven and small back up, so it will be one out for each one in I'm afraid. We need more quality in the squad to cover for injuries that's why we have suffered recently.

Who is the Wigan danger man that Pompey should watch?
Jason Koumas is the man to watch, he's been superb this season and he creates lots of chances for the forwards, which don't always get taken.

How do you reckon Wigan will go this season?
I was quietly confident a month ago of a mid table finish, now I feel we may have a relegation battle on our hands again if we're not careful.

What about Pompey?
Can see Pompey finishing either just in or just outside the European places you've made a good start to build on.

If you could take any Pompey player from our squad and put him in yours, who would it be and why?
Matt Taylor, we were linked with him a couple of seasons ago and every time I see him on TV he scores a wonder goal.

Go on - who is going to win, Wigan or Pompey?
Latics will win this one because, we always do each other a favour, remember your relegation fight and last season you let us win when we needed the points late in the season. Well we need them points again to stop the rot, so I'm going for a 2-1 home win.

I'm reading elsewhere on the internet that Titus Bramble 'turned down Pompey' in the summer. Good on you Titus, thats the first footbaling decision you've got right in about eight years. You haven't missed us, we certainly haven't missed you. perfect.

Good insight Worbo thanks for doing it.... but Melchoit 'Class' and Bramble 'absolutely awesome' are you having a laugh at our expense? Koumas I can see as a player for now and the future and think you are lucky to have him (hope you can hold onto him if the going gets tough) Sibierski could be good player for you too, I always thought he was underatted at City. Obviously don't share your prediction but good luck I just can't see Pompey losing maybe a draw ...?? One final point I don't understand ... Your first question says you are 'Latics' not 'Wigan' but to me you are clearly 'Wigan' I'm confused... oh .. just realised you are referring to the Rugby team 'Wigan' not the Football team 'Wigan' ...I see (I think) but then again I always thought the 'Latics' were Oldham ;)

If it was a choice between Titus and Sylvain, i know that we made the right decision. I reckon we could batter them if we go for it from the off.

For sure it was a right decision for all concerned Titus. You wouldn't have played for us in the league but we may have loaned him out to Bournemouth. I was a bit shocked when we were linked. Rarely has a player done us a favour by going elsewhere, as much as TB.

im glad beyond doubt that we got distin as opposed to bramble but this little bit of me was thinking that maybe if we had signed him with sol, optimus, adams and co to work with him maybe he could have become the player he once theatened to be? clearly distin is much better tho and i wouldnt dream of swaping him for bramble tho... but tbh do we really beleive that he 'turned us down'...

i genuinly think he was given a strait choce: "lactics" or pompey. for "lactics" he would play regualr football, and have a greater chance to a) get into a rythmn and b) if he did, get picked for england (errr...), whilst at pompey, he would have had the chance to learn off experianced centr backs, hopefully improve, and have the possibility of getting some european football next year. it would have been nice to have both bramble and distin, as i am confident titus just had a very bad time at newcastle, but if he is doing well for the "lactics" then good for him! As for the predicvtion, pompey want the points to continue there run for the "best of the rest" place (5th) - and so need the win, whilst lactics want to re-start there season. let the games commence!

Good article and good idea too Rug - I particulary liked the 'who in the Wigan team would we want' and 'who should they fear' answers .... Nobody and everybody... ill you be doing this again with other Vital sites ?

worbo deserves the credit mate - he approached me at first so i just reversed a few questions and added a couple of others... i know it might have sounded harsh, but there really isnt anyone in the wigan squad that i could honestly say - in my view - would improve us... this is something that i may think about doing with other sites tho, as i have seen this done before and they are generally done very well.

Warbo i have no doubt that you are happy with Titus Bramble, he was under tremendous pressure at Newcastle because of the nature of the club. There is no comparison between Newcastle and Wigan is there really? He is probably relieved to have left like Boumsong and Moore and other second class defenders. Distin puts in big performances week after week in the premiership and deserves all the rave reviews that he gets. When Bramble and Melchoit, who has never been world class, do the same then quite rightly they will be rated as quality defenders.

titus only ever lacked consistency at newcastle. He would make amazing tackles, then give away stupid penalties. he seems to have ironed out those from his game, and he is still young - he could have joined our group of players looking to the future...

Worbo - Forgot to mention ... I predicted Wigan for the drop at the end of the season... I think that without Mr Jewell at the helm you just might struggle.... Good Luck (after Saturday) though...
