Portsmouth by Mike Oldfield

Pompey should run out to Portsmouth by Mike Oldfield! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from The Rabbi's poll are thoughts completely agree with.

The run out music that most clubs have is not something that everyone likes, some view it as being too 'American' but I think that it sets the tone and gets the crowd pumped up - as if they need it! - as when you hear this kick in you know you are only moments away from the start of the game.

I believe that we currently run out to music from Pirates of the Caribbean, but as I have only been to the one home game this season - yep we all know which one that was! - as I did not pay too much attention as I was so hyped at actually being there I cannot be sure on this?

I always liked it when we came out to the classic 'Portsmouth' theme by Mike Oldfield, it is unique in as much as no one else can really use it can they as it is a song for us! It might be seen as too old fashioned now and it might not fit in with 'where we are now' but I always liked it when I heard this played.

To be honest as much as I like the clichéd ones like 'simply the best' or 'let me entertain you' and so on, as they do get you pumped up that Mike Oldfield one always worked for me.

What the poll asked - What music should Pompey run out to before home matches?

How you voted - Portsmouth - Mike Oldfield 38%, Jerusalem 18%, Simply the best - Tina Turner 9%, Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes 8%, Enjoy Yourself - The Specials 6%, We are the Champions - Queen 5%, Return of the Los Palmas 7 - Madness 4%, Land of Hope and Glory 4%, Hurry up Harry - Sham 69 2%, Zoom - Fat Larry's Band 2%, Moonlight Shadow - Mike Oldfield 1%, Hate to say I told you so - The Hives 1%, Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf 1%, Song 2 - Blur 1%

Current Poll - Pompey return to action this weekend after the international break, has this broke our rhythm or can we get back into our stride carrying on where we left off.

We went into the international break unbeaten since the previous one, we will now be hoping for an almost unheard of 3rd successive away victory - which would be 4 including the league cup win - when we go to Wigan, something we have never achieved in the Premier league and have not done this full stop for over 20 years, more than 50 years since we did this in the top flight!

Can we make it a hat-trick of away wins, that is what pompeyrug - me - wants to know with this - 'can we make it a hat-trick of away league wins when we face Wigan this weekend?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

My choice 1st choice came 2nd & my 2nd choice (if I had had one) came 1st. Prefer the original Portsmouth tune not that funked up crap when Vegtable & Fckwit were in control. Anything beats the z cars tune that Everton & Watford come out to.

jerusalem really caught the nations imagination during the ashes series which england won a few years back didnt it. most knew of the song - or at least should have - before, but after that summer literally everyone in england did for sure...
pompeyrug
it's madness

Mike Oldfield returns...Thanks for proving you lot really are the best fans in the country. Top choice. Can't wait to hear it at the next home game. Be like 1986 again. Can anyone get in touch with Mr Oldfield and let him know the good news?
The Rabbi
He'll be after the royalties.

I didn't vote this time because non of the options seemed that inspiring, as for Jerusalem it has been sung at rugby games for decades. Now I like Mike, Oldfield and all the other smashey and nicey anthems, I still put tubular bells on in the car ( bit tricky to drive with all that clanging i tells ye) for me the clue is in Mike's surname. I like the tune Portsmouth BUT it does not represent where the club is now, obviously it does represent it geographically or the team would be coming out to a tune call fareham or locksheath or something. But Pompey have evolved no "morphed" in to a modern forward thinking club, and yes we should remember the great stars of the past of course but we should remember the perils of dwelling on them. This season come on the field with old Mike, fine, but then then dust him down and carefully put him in the attic with the other old records next to the orange plastic music maker battery record player.

Russellm - The people had their say and they said Mike Oldfield 'Portsmouth'. can't stand in the way of democracy. unless you live in burma.
The Rabbi
Umm. I'm not sure where I stand on this one. Mike Oldfields Portsmouth does have the huge advantage of being written about the city so it's uniqueness (if there is such a word) it's unquestionable, but it's a bit 'jingly, jangly, sailors climbing up ropes and stuff' for me... Jerusalem I love but should be (and is to a certain extent) associated with 'England' teams (Rugby or Football or whatever) ....... I quite like the idea of 'Hurry up Harry' being played after the game, especially if we've won.... Imagine beating Chelsea on a cold February evening and singing .... We're going down the pub....
Chix
Rabbi, as i said i like Mike but i don't think it is an inspiring but is as chix puts it a jangly jingly sailors song, and who knows i could be in the silent majority. As for Burma, there are plenty of other places closer to home where true democracy is stifled, like my house when strictly come dancing is on.
russellm
in fact there is another old relic of the past that i would like to see gone forever with no chance of a come back, and its at the top of the page, yes, that stupid bl00dy mascot wondering around waiving at people like he knows them, i'm going to suggest a democratic vote.
russellm
I agree russellm. I'd like to see the pompey sailor consigned to a tour of duty a long way from our shores. Possibly with no return date. I'm not a fan of frogmore either (sorry kids). Surely there must be a large pond nearby (Baffins?) where he can be released back into the wild? That said, what could we replace him with? I think we need a new poll....
The Rabbi
Mike oldfield has been in contact with me and is very happy with the results of our poll. I haven't broken the bad news to Tina Turner yet. Wish me luck.
The Rabbi
Tina will be gutted Rabbi - To think... Simply the best isn't viewed as simply the best !
Chix
The Pompey Sailor must stay at all costs .... he (well the character not the actual bloke who wonders around the stadium) has been a big part of my life ever since I used to wonder down the corner shop i New Road and see his thumbs up, down or sideways on the front of the saturday evening paper .... In those days it was Blue and called the Football Mail !!
Chix
as for that bl00dy blue Frog thing 'Frogmore' he can go plant his spawn somewhere else.... He's weird !
Chix
When i said the Pompey sailor I meant the guy who dresses up as him (if he was really in the navy he'd have been court marshalled a long time ago) not the actual pompey sailor character.
The Rabbi
I'll go with the Oldfied tune. Thinking maybe " Mash It Up Harry " by Ian Dury & the Blockheads might be apropos for this season though !

oldfield camt change it, classic
