Campbell will win his 70th cap

It has been confirmed by spineless Steve that Sol Campbell will start for England against Estonia tomorrow.

The spineless one said: 'it is good to be able to call up someone of Sol Campbell's experience and quality.

'He has been absolutely tremendous this season and I had no hesitation in bringing him back.

'Sol's reaction to being left out was fantastic, as I knew it would be. He is performing well, has got great experience and will add to the team'.

Who would have thought we would see this happen some 15 months ago or so when Spineless Steve did not even have the balls to tell Campbell in person that he was 'moving on' with his options - he instead left him a message on his answer phone!

Now Campbell will win his first cap since the 2006 world cup finals when he came on as a sub in our group game with Sweden - this cap will be his 70th for his country.

He will also - as eastneydave rightly points out - see him become the first Pompey player to play in a competitive match since Jimmy Dickinson did way back in 1954. Of course Mark Hateley's appearances for England whilst with Pompey came in friendly internationals.

David James had become the first Pompey player in 23 years to play for England when he came on against Germany, Campbell will now be the first for 53 years in a competitive match.

I wonder what odds I could get of both James and Campbell starting in Russia?

Deserves the chance, he is an outstanding player who is also a great leader. I am proud that he will be representing the club on Saturday, welcome back the Sol man.

i don't think you should waste your money on that bet Rug, however as you know i think this will only improve Sol's morale and he will just grow in confidence and stature. A commanding performance and a clean sheet will be what he and the nation are looking for, a goal would be even better. The one issue Sol had was would he get a real chance whilst playing for pompey and the answer is injuries permitting yes. I'm not sure how i would feel if he was a regular for england due to his injury susceptibility but really do see these two games being a benefit to Sol and pompey, not to mention the fringe benefits of the effect it will have on other england hopefuls Nugent and as Rug pointed out to me Glen Johnson.

the other thing for me is for years in was moaning about all the successful teams build from the back, and with TA and Sol we have done it. TA and Sol have lead it, we are known for one of the better back fours ( yes even this season) and Sol has reaped the reward, i am really pleased for the guy.

so am i russ - and the chat that we had on thursday could very well pan out, particularly now that it has started well with sol getting his chance... yep, johnson has impressed me alot since coming back - so i reckon he could very well get another chance with england...
pompeyrug
i know what i will put my money on an england win, but also a cheeky bet on sol to score!
pompeyrug
i reckon a very cheeky bet of an all pompey back 5...GJ, LP, SC, MT/MC...what would the odds of THAT be? (assuming linvoy is fit)
pompeycarpet
that would be a very cheeky bet indeed mate - but if you could get this to be the case anytime in the next 10-20 yrs or so maybe you might get a return...
pompeyrug
nope that would not be cheeky that would be a waste of money, like all my ten pounders i wasted on away games last year, this year so far i am about even
russellm
but some how i've managed to be up in my euros account ???? i still haven't worked that one out
