Pompey debate of the day (10/10/07)

On Tuesday The Quay ran a text competition asking what theme you would like to hear Pompey run out too, so today's hot topic of debate for the fellowship of Vital Pompey is inspired by that very question posed.

So what song would you like to hear Pompey come out to when they play at Fortress Fratton?

mark mudie was keen to see us run out to barry white's song 'you're my first, my last, my everything'

I don't want to hear any mention of Queen, fatboy Slim, Robbie Williams, James Brown, Amarillo, or Hey Baby. How about 'Hurry up Harry' by Sham 69? What was wrong with 'Portsmouth' by Mike Oldfield? One of the best bits of music to be played when we score should be the Guitar Riff of 'Seven Nation Army' by the White Stripes. Bruges have been celebrating goals to it for years in belgium. I'm not certain Barry White (although I am a fan of his music) is what we should be listening to. To retain our reputation in the premiership as 'good old fashioned fans in a good old fashioned ground'. it should be something rousing but fresh. 'Hate to say I told you so' by the Hives, or The Specials 'Enjoy Yourself' which is a great tune (Listen to it on Amazon kids).

Something rock style. Nothing girlie/wet/romantic crap. Something to stir the blood & soul like Jerusalem that worked during the ashes. A magnificent overture to wake the dead.

...the great escape...sorry, i will never forget the old times...time to move on? how about "we are the champions" - or is that cliched? maybe "another one bites the dust"...or maybe that shoukld be for when we score a goal...or at the end of a game...how about "sweet chariot" to honur our rugby friends!

Come on lads, Simply the Best, by Tina Turner, because that is what we are, as we are Pompey.

Quite like the old POMPEY tune, maybe thats cos it reminds me of my childhood. (is that the mike oldfield thing?)
pompey4me
simply the best is a classic isnt it and would prob be my tip too mate...
pompeyrug
the tune I forgot is that Shep Wolley song from the 80's that got banned for mentioning 'S C U M M E R S'. What was it called and has anyone got a copy?
The Rabbi
No No No No No Tina Turner is hardly a step forward. Its as awful as Queen and all those other rock anthems. Come on people lets move forward. new Stadium, european football, new music.
The Rabbi
but does that song you mention not stomp on your point slightly mate :) a song for the 80's...
pompeyrug
completely. I just don't want the typical easy going choice of middle of the road rock that you hear at every other sports stadium. Portsmouth have a great reputation amongst premiership fans as a great place to go where you can watch football close to the pitch, enjoy a great atmosphere, and enjoy a pint in any number of pubs before and after the game. rather that than travelling four miles out of town to an industrial estate to a bog standard mechano stadium like reading, Middlesbrough, or Wigan? The music we play should reflect that, hence it should be non conformist even if it is from the 80's (or 90's or 00's or whatever). just not Tina Turner.

We could charge out to the eye of the tiger from Survivor, lets be corny like everyone else, Hi Ho Silver Lining gets the Wolves fans going and thats bloody corny.
