'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Redknapp after more attacking play

We all want to be entertained and anyone that tells you that they were not entertained on Saturday is a liar, this is what the business we call football is all about and as he told the Pompey Site this is something that Harry Redknapp is encouraging more of: 'I think people want to see teams play football. I was delighted with our performance, we scored seven goals and could have scored an awful lot more.

'If you've got good players you need to let them play. I watched Barcelona play the other day and they had a forward line of Messi, Henry, Ronaldinho and Deco.

'I don't know where they were playing - I don't think they knew - but they ripped Lyon apart. It was fantastic to watch'.

Clearly we will not be seeing that amount of goals scored every week in a match involving Pompey, the chances are we will never again see that amount of goals ever again, but the signs are encouraging that we could see some highly entertaining football in the months ahead.

We have a squad of players that are all highly talented and the players on the field at the weekend were full so full of confidence you could literally see it oozing out of them.

Yep it is nice to keep clean sheets, but I would forgo these for great entertainment more often than not and would also not mind us conceding goals, as if we play to our true potential we can and will score even more, the future - and not just because of Saturday's match - is so promising for this fantastic football club, I am looking forward to every minute.

imagine what we could do with 2 STRIKERS!!!! ha ha
:) frightening isnt it...
The defence needs to be solid before we go gun ho. On Saturday Reading got very lucky and we were not set up right defensively. Sort that out and who knows.
2 decent strikers perhaps, sorry, can we borrow a goal or two?
you can have a goal, if you give us...say...6 million to help our new stadium, training facilities, etc. ;-). and we could nick that didier drogba off you, i hear he is good...and african.
We are capable of scoring goals, lots of goals, go for it Harry, if we had a back four and a decent keeper who knows what we could do !! Sorry lads only joking i wouldnt swop any of them. Drogba would be nice, and Jermaine is on the bench again tonight,
Kranky and Utaka on wings. They definately contributed to the mass-attack on saturday.
Oh my god - more of the same my heart couldn't take it - I'd be dead before half time. Seriously though if you ask any fan anywhere in the country if they would rather win 5-2 than 3-0 I reckon they'd plump for the 5-2 most days of the week - Remember Kevin Keegan's Newcastle - They worked on the basis that if they scored more than the opposition that's ok ... Who can argue against that.... 6-3 against Fulham anyone ?
6-3? you think we will only score 6 against fulham? nah, im going for 10-6
Fulham have been scoring for fun & letting them by the bucket full, well they were before the 0-0 at Chelski. Should be an interesting game for Sunday afternoon viewing. We owe them one for the draw at their place last season.
carpet, you'd be daft to think you could score 6 past any one in this division!!!LOL, who said that??
Anyone notice Kranjcar has started tracking back? Maybe why he has squeezed in at last
Carpet - have a look at my 'prediction' made earlier this morning on the Prediction league - I'm with you.. anything could happen. Storage and don't forget the game at Fratton last year too... If ever a team didn't deseerve a point !
Paul - I noticed on Saturday that Krunchie was getting back and backing challenges as though he wants to make the place his. In fact he launched himself into one tackle. Sign of the times at FP not only play well but expand your game if not back to the bench at best.
Makes a mockery of my poll after the last home game!! Who says 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 (whatever you think we were playing) is a boring formation now?? HR on the radio has been saying, it's not the formation that matters, it's the players within that formation working and moving for each other.
Maybe the players realise there is no room for passengers any more .... What a healthy position to be in .... Who would have thought at the end of last year that eight games into the new season we'd have a midfield that didn't feature GON, Matty or Pedro.. If I'd had suggested it you'd have laughed me off the site :)
True chix.
hey guys how about a midfield without kranky, utaka, davis and diop?
kranchie was fantastic wasnt he, both going forward and defending - did you see the ground he covered tho, watch the game again but watch how quickly he gets back to cover hermann at left back if we are attacking with a corner or set piece that hermann went up for - incredible you wouldnt think he was the same player that weve seen before... i love matty taylor to bits but he is going to have one hell of a fight to get back in - if he even can?
Lysimachus i agree i cannot see a midfield without these fellas, as well as muntari, in it - something again i didnt think i would be saying a few weeks back - well not about them all...
So I guess the question is ... What would our reaction be if Matty was indeed sold in Janury to fund a striker or used as a leverage in the Defoe deal... again seemed unthinkable a few weeks back but now ... as much as I love the guy it doesn't seem such a bitter pill
..... but I don't want him to go though... just thought 'I state my position very quickly .... I'm just starting debate !!
i am a massive, massive matty taylor fan but tbh i have started to think along the same lines - altho again like you i dont want him to go... like you say mate its something that was almost unthinkable just a couple of weeks back, but i cannot see how he will get in the side but then again i cannot see how a new striker would either as 'arry would have to go with 2 up top most of the time...
i dont think he can be sold, we cant talk about strentgh in depth if we dont have a quality left sided midfield back up
For me the man of the Reading game was Muntari
where do you lot think you will finish this season
interesting call russ - i thought he was good but wouldnt have given him the motm for that match, it would have been krunchie for me...
ive always said that as long as we equal last season - at least - i would be happy and that would be progress... but i still think somewhere between as high as 4th and 7th, somewhere in this bracket is where we will finish...
Hey ! Let's not get carried away ! It's all very well to put on a show in one game, but history says the left side of midfield belongs to Matty. Plus he does a decent job at left back and is much too valuable an asset to even think about getting rid of...epecially for a slacker like Defoe.
Anything less than 6th spot will be a disappointment, no matter how arry tries to spin it.
im thinking maybe matty deserves to try to claim his place at left back again? we cant let him leave, as that would destry all our "competition for places" and so on, and i wouldnt want to have him playing agaisnt us. the problem he is facing, is that kranjcar is just so darn good! a new striker could also have problems fitting in - although i still think we need one.
this season: anywhere between 4th and 14th. with chelski, us, totenham, mancity, blackburn, everton, villa looking the most likely to finish higher, i wouldnt rule out a couple of surprises - including reading, and fulham, who both fancy there chances. AND, dont forget diomancy says fulham will finish above us...
Matty must play soon, or he'll be pushing for a january exit. But, how can you change the team from saturday, am i converted to this new system???? No, it's still 4-4-2 for me.
...and me 4me, although I am thinking that perhaps I need to be a little less rigid in my opinion as we are where we are playing some odd formations ....... Oh and Matty would start in my 4-4-2 as well !
i cant believe matty taylor hasn't been playing i think his a great player and he was one of your best players last season and gives you a few extra goals as well
i am one of his biggest fans and i too shared that thought mate - that he should play week in week out - but with the way others are playing it is little wonder he cannot get in
