Pompey's got talent - we hope!

Yes, Pompey's got talent so we can produce at least one worthwhile Academy graduate! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from russellm's poll are thoughts that I share.

Clearly we cannot say this will definitely happen, but with the steps being put in place there is every chance that Pompey could some day again produce some real talent from within what promises - all being well - to be a fruitful youth set up that we currently have, and we hope to improve on further still.

This talent might not be strictly from the Pompey area, which would be the ideal thing in a perfect world, but I long for the day when Pompey actually field a player again that has come through our own youth system, which I can see happening to be honest, with this not just being in hope but also expectation.

What the poll asked - Given HR's preference for 'experience' can we have a worthwhile Academy from which to find a star?

How you voted - Yes, Pompey's got talent 66%, More chance of finding Shergar shagging Lord Lucan 13%, 3 opes, Bob, no and brown enverl 13%, So many NASA will buy a season ticket 5%, Academies are nothing more than a sop to the rules 3%

Current Poll - Pompey 7 Reading 4, what a game - I am still saying that even now. 11 goals, with 7 from Pompey in what is almost certainly the most entertaining game I have ever seen.

Any Pompey goal is good - if you are a Pompey fan - be clearly some of the seven were better than others, not only in terms of quality but maybe importance, but which was you favourite this is want Lysimachus wants to know with this - 'Favourite goal against Reading?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

I really hope the academy will produce some quality youngsters for the club this has got to be the way going forward. We need to aspire to be like Man Utd and Liverpool, with top facilities which will attract youngsters from all over the country. This will help us build a quality squad and increase revenue from player sales.

...and get some decent foreign scouts, like arsnal, to get the best of the best foreign playors.

There must be loads of lad in the area that have the ability to make it, and Pompey have not got the network in place to recruit them. My lad ended up at Swindon for a year, even though we lived in Gosport, he was gutted that Pompey made no move for him, and eventually he joined the Army and now plays for them. Now we are an established Premiership team, we should put everything in place to show that we intend to stay there, new training facilities, youth development and academy and the new ground, otherwise think of all the teams who did not invest or invested badly. Leeds, Wednesday, Forest and Wimbledon to name a few.

The kids of today are the golden nuggets of 5,10, 15 years time & beyond.

Absolutely right. The local schools sides have done well in recent years and that is talent we need to tap - kids who want to play for Pompey.. We have tried to bring in foreign kids but I believe the Trinidad and Tobago deal fell through.

clearly you need the talent but the willingness to play for pompey could see many have the desire to make it, that could go along way in helping them...

The more successful you are the more the kids will want to play for us. Traditionally we have not attracted the best prospects to the club, when we are a force in the Premiership then parents will want their kids to come to the Academy at Pompey.

this may be viewed as 'over ambitious' but i really to think that in the next few yrs we really could be a top force in this division... im not saying we will win the league - you never know tho - but the gap between the top sides will close, so as long as we keep our top players, but others and produce our own we will close this down even more... i think it would be premature to write off chelski, but i reckon their bubble is bursting so who knows what this season alone might bring - not that im setting targets too high... im so excited about what the future is going to bring for this club - with hopefully plenty of our own players produced aswell...

Rug you only have to look at the youngsters at Arsenal, recruited from the UK and abroad to see how you can devlop all this young talent together. Chelsea struggle without Lampard, Drogba, Terry and Essien, all those other big name buys dont seem to care and do seem to have been brought in by their strong chairman, particularly, Cole, Ballack and Schevshenko, but i am sure thay will sort things out but not with Avram Grant in charge, they need a strong coach in charge, Pompey must aim high now, and we must be at least a top 10 if not higher, but i am sure January will have a huge bearing on our development and final position.

well some of you may have thought i was being cynical when i suggested this poll,...oh i was, but since it was first suggested we do seem to have taken steps to get the right people in the right place. Whilst i don't at all disagree with the foreign youngsters idea the evidence to support it is overwhelming i do think we need to find some 2 home grown and 2 locals to comply with the future UEFA rules. My understanding of the UEFA definition of homegrown is pompey registered for any 3 years from 17 years through to 21 years old and local meaning home nation, i.e. england NOT UK)

to clarify the local player must also be registered with the club for three years between the age group of 17 - 21 years. So we have a little way to go. These rukles come into force for the champions league this season and i understand from my journo rodent mate that Platini plans to implement them into the UEFA cup from next season, and we all hope we will be playing in one of those competitions by then.

it's a grand thought but just how many come through and how much does it cost? at our place our academy has had 20m ploughed into it and we've snaffled some great kids but the aim is to produce one a year that'll break into the first team, is that good enough reward?

Well put Merlin, your club has spent a fortune on players and has also produced some exciting young players. I watched a programme about your Academy and it is a shining example of how good they can be, but success has to happen overnight, and if you can buy a Drogba or a Pizzaro you get them rather than take a punt on Sinclair, who can then go on loan to help his development.

Surely the model to follow is West Ham (in terms of englishness anyway) Carrick, Cole, Ferdinand x 2, Reo-Coker, Lampard, etc.. all came up through their ranks in recent years. The Hammers blooded them then sold them on for profit. I'm not saying we should sell them on necessarily (except if not good enough) but surely the academy has to be self funding... look at who arsenal have developed them let go for cash... Upson, Alliadiare, Bentley, Bendtner, _ We don't need to reinvent the wheel the forul is out there ...

Merlin you are missing the point, if you want to see European football at fratton park or the "new stadium" then it is not a pleasentry it is a UEFA obligation.

pompeyrug you may recall when i first suggested this poll i was very cynical because at West ham it was Billy Bonds and Frank Lampard Snr who did all the work. Any way HR is sayiong all the right things about the academy now so i feel in another way the club have made progress
