Papa Bouba Diop Enjoying His Footie

Pompey's Papa Bouba Diop says he's surprised that Reading haven't had a better start to the season as he prepares to face Steve Coppell's men this weekend.

I've now been at Portsmouth for a month and I have to say, I've never enjoyed my football more. It's fantastic to play for a manager who really believes in me. I'd like to think that in the games I've played, I've done the manager and the fans justice.

'I have been surprised by Reading's start because they played some fantastic football last season. Maybe teams are more aware of them now and that has been a difficulty for them. But it will still be a hard game for us because they have players that deserve a lot of respect.'

well, that takes him our of our team to play reading then :-) He has done well,m but reading have had there good season, and i dont see them being the team thbey were last year.
pompeycarpet
2 games, 2 bookings. No chance him doing too many games without a flash of yellow.
storagematt
i think that the two games hes been in, hes been immense, his overall figure is really imposing, and his aerial strength is second to none, and I know i shouldnt be comparing him to GON, but i cant help to think that we are better off with papa, with our new formation then with our usual 4-4-2, plus Lauren will come back and slot on the right, so i doubt GON would of started anyway
PompeyGleamer
Its just a pity we didnt manage to get him 3 years ago, he would be a real fixture in the team now. He has settled in well and gives us a real solid base in the middle of the field. Who mentioned Gary bloody O'Neill again!!
Owenspompey
Carpet you would think by now that the players would know. Unless he needs to goes shopping with the Missus tomorrow afternoon and phoned up the press to make sure!!!!

papa smurf has been fantastic since we got him - we hoped that we would see the papa smurf of a few yrs back and it looks like we have... good on the fella.
pompeyrug
my concerns are he is mostly all strength and no guile, and we were worried about Muntari's agrression
russellm
Nothing wrong with having a har-tackling lump in midfield Russellm, it frees up the ball players, Mick Kennedy anyone?
paultsmouth
Jury's still out as far as I am concerned... but he's made a good start..... be interesting to see how he plays against Fulham ...
Chix
he is a great person to have in the team agaisnt more physical teams, and also teams that can outclass us, but we can then beat physiclt. He should not, however be playing against reading, fulham, wigan etc when we have the players to out skill them.
pompeycarpet
yes well paultsmouth Mick Kennedy doesnt play anymore. I dont have a problem with hard tackling midfielder we should always p-lay one but we play two and and currently apart from the VERY occasional Muntari arrow pass, we don't play a midfield ball player ouir game is based on Kanu holding play
russellm
Harry obviously thinks they are his first choice but for me I think the jury is still out on Diop and this hard man midfield, there will come a time when both are suspended, and Harry seems a little one dimensional ( or arrogant) to change. hard men against blackburn fine, try it against liverpool at anfield and we will be two players down before the 75th minute
russellm
well he had another fine game today, but gave away a stupid penalty...
pompeyrug
I think the ball rather hit him, he was just unlucky the ref was in a perfect position to see it. He is a bloody good player though isnt he, and Sulley and Diop proved that they can get stuck in without getting booked.
Owenspompey
im really, really warming to papa smurf with each game he plays and he is starting to again look like the player that was so good that arsenal wanted him to replace vieira... davis was immense tho, fantastic - but kranjcar was the motm a different class...
pompeyrug
Papa was magnificent and he is similar to the great Viera, however he is a long way from being that good. He brings a real touch of steel to the spine of the team and enjoys playing with Muntari and Davis, they form a really good unit.
Owenspompey
... The jury is back in .... He'll do nicely, his performance against reading was frst class - He really adds to the current midfield set-up.
