Villa in for Pedro Mendes?

The transfer window is shut, with it not opening again until January but this does not stop the transfer rumours from going on, with the latest word from the Sun being that Villa will offer £3m to prize Pedro Mendes away from Pompey.

You get rumour after rumour, with so few actually coming off, but Villa were said to have been in for him during the summer so I am slightly worried that this could have some backbone to it - although I very much hope not.

Mendes has found it tough to get into the side this season, with Harry Redknapp more often than not taking the 'pace and power' route, something that he really believes is essential to push us on, so this could cost arguably our most creative influence in midfield his place at the club?

Since the infamous Ben Thatcher incident he has not quite been the same player, which is understandable, had someone basically assaulted me I would have been more than a little shaken up and psychologically harmed without doubt, the second 'targeting' from another Man City player at the time - Joey Barton - must have also shaken him a little.

He returned for the league cup tie with Burnley last night and although he did not have a bad game, it was not one of his better and he seems to be lacking, maybe this is confidence, a lack of football, or still some after affects of the above mentioned attacks?

Either way I would be completely devastated if Redknapp allowed a truly classy player to leave, particularly for such a paltry sum of £3m, what about you? - However I do have this worry that he could well be offloaded...

Yes, this has been mentioned before. I think Harry's priority in Jan will be another striker and funds will need to be found as I don't expect Sascha to put anymore in so I wouldn't be surprised to see Pedro move on plus a couple of others. Shame though, great player.

would like to see him at villa, whenever i watched him play for you he always looked to have good vision and used the ball well. Not to mention his eye for a pass and stunning goals. He would add more balance and experience through age to our midfield, still only 28 aswell. If there are two managers in this league that can get the best out of players its Rednapp and O'Neill.

tbh mate i dont blame you in the slightest for wanting him at villa, he is a great footballer - he really is! the word 'great' is used far to easily, but i really do rate him as a great player... we might need to raise money for a striker, but selling mendes would be a worse thing than selling o'neil...

As a Villa fan I like the sound of signing Mendes. He has different qualities to our other midfielders. See him perhaps taking over the role of Patrik Berger in the squad who will be in his last season with us. Experienced, classy passer of the ball who can open up defences. Would supplement Reo Coker, Barry, Gardner, Osbourne and Petrov nicely. MON may be tempted to part with Petrov. Isn't Harry a big fan of his? Possible swap move? January will tell!

berger, now there was another classy player - it was a real shame when he left too... tbh i wanted petrov when he decided to go to villa but would much rather have mendes now as altho ive not seen as much of petrov as clearly a villa fan has ive not been that impressed with him really.

I'd love him at Villa, we need a player who actually loves shooting :D

Whatever happens a legend in our recent history. For that last minute goal against Man City, for those of us there or not, he will be remembered & we will be forever grateful.

Any chance of you letting us have Matt Taylor as well! Please...

Sorry Villa fans but not for sale. Pedro started the season poorly and that is why he is not in the side. Once he hits his old form he will be back in the side to stay.

Harry has just been talking about how great it is to have such strength in depth - and he is not likely to move on from there! we (probably) sold GON to raise funds - just a little oo late to use them - so i wouldnt be surprised if we got a decent striker in january AND kept everyone. I hear defoe isnt getting even a place in the squad these days...regretting his decision do you think?

we will without doubt get a striker in january but we might still have to sell at least 1 player more to help raise these funds...

Been giving this some thought and whilst im convinced its true Villa want the player, the odd thing is how could HR continue with the " weve got real quality in depth in our squad midfield" if he allows Pedro to go, surely with no gary o he cant be talking about Davis or Hughes. Taylor is a "lefty" so to speak. Diop[ has a poor disciplinary record and the wonderfull Sulley is likely to pick a card or two so where would that quality be. I'm sure we will get that striker and we will probably have to sell, but if mendes leaves there is no quality squad depth, its all run around a lots and we need better if we are going to get that 6th place that won the poll.

I find it hard to believe that we would contemplate letting him go, maybe if O'Neill offered Petrov Harry would let him go, but Pedro looked fine last night and he is going to be needed pretty soon, due to suspensions and in January because of that bloody competition in Africa. I think he is a bloody good player and i really hope that he does stay.

russelem - what about kranjcar and mvuemba? and HR DOES rate davis... Having said that, i hope he doesn't let him go, as he is a very consitent performer.

mvuemba seems destined for a fantastic future but he is being used out on the right when he does play isnt he and i cannot see 'arry being that keen on playing him too much this season tbh... kranjcar could play through the middle in a free role - which i think is his best roll - but mendes just adds that quality and experience doesnt he... all we can do is hope nothing comes of this, but he didnt sound too happy in an interview i heard from him after the game last night tbh...

another thing we have to think about is if he wasnt happy sitting on the bench at spurs he wont be happy doing so here will he? but as i say all we can do is hope that things turn around and he gets back in where he belongs soon, but he will have to earn his place back tho...

..... don't start me off on Kanu, I'd be here all night .... Pedro is class and just oozes quality when on top of his game ... don't forget he is a Champions League winner ! - I'd be gutted if he went we need creativity in the middle and he can provide that ..... one thing though especially to the Villa fans .. don't be thinking he'll bag you goals ... He may fire memorable bullets & screamers into the back of the net now and again but his season best (for any club) is six .. and that was in a second divison Portugese side ....... three at most per season for Pompey...... I'd also be gutted if he went as I spent a fair amount of time researching his profile to publish on this site and now i've nearly finished i'd be really annoyed if HR let him go ... all that work wasted !!

it wouldnt be wasted as he could still take up an honorary legend status couldnt he - that is if he needs the 'honorary' bit, which he prob does as he cannot be a full legend just yet... we will just have to wait and see what january brings wont we, but i would be devistated if 'arry let him leave.

Letting him go for 3M! That not going to buy one leg of a decent striker, so no point really selling him in my mind. He is too good to toss to one side but if he doesn't get regular football he will leave, but it will be his choice.
