'If It's Football, It's Vital'

You made your bed, lie in it!

I do not want this to seem like it is a 'get at Harry Redknapp thing' as it is not, I love the fella to bits, but his moaning over the international break, before, during and after do not really leave me with much sympathy, clearly it is a pain but what can you do?

As he told The News he feels the international breaks are basically a joke: 'the international break is a mess. We played at Arsenal two Saturday's ago, I had 10 players go and didn't see or hear from them until Friday morning before Liverpool.

'I asked one of them who he played; he said Burkina Faso, or whatever it is. I've never heard of it. I bet they are good at football. I know where it is now'.

Virtually immediately after the Arsenal defeat almost half of the Pompey squad jetted off for various internationals around the globe, with most not returning until a day or so before the Liverpool match at the weekend.

Clearly, this did not give Redknapp much time to work with the team, let alone talk about the Arsenal match, as had he done that we would have been going into the Liverpool match in a negative mindset, but it is the same for most teams, so what can he do.

To be the best you have to buy the best, which are mostly international standard, these are clearly the best players, but when all is said and done he chooses to sign these players so it is the price you pay with signing international players, particularly the African ones that he is so keen on signing.

These international breaks frustrate me too, but they happen, there is not a lot you can do about them is there, the only way to avoid them is by not signing international players but then we will never get to where we want to go!

If he does not like this now, then he will hate January when the African Nations comes around and we lose a lot of important players for a number of weeks in many cases, but I will be prepared to launch a savage attack on him if he laments this as he had strengthened the team with even more African players over the summer, so he can blame no one at all for this as although the African Nations might not mean much to most of us it is a major deal for Africans, so although the timing is bad for us, it is good for them.

Again, I must stress I am not having a pop at Redknapp but you cannot have things both ways can you, as the saying goes, you made your bed so lie in it - and this applies to all managers, who know what they are letting themselves in for when they sign international players.

'I asked one of them who he played; he said Burkina Faso, or whatever it is. I've never heard of it. I bet they are good at football. I know where it is now'. Your manager is a muppet!
murph
not sure about the muppet bit, but i would agree that this kind of comment shows a real lack of respect - but he is not the only one thinking like this mate... but he, along with the other managers out there that are moaning know what they are letting themselves in for when they sign internationals, particularly african footballers...
pompeyrug
Even I know where Burkina Faso is!!
LUFC1
i think that he was prob being more sarcastic than anything...
pompeyrug
he was trying to make a point...i mean, really, was it worth whoever it was (who was it?) going off to play burkina faso. I know that there have been complaints about peopleputting club over country...but berkina faso...No sympathy about the squad leaving, as liverpool had more playoirs leave. Its like a handicapp...the better you are, the more playors leave...anyway, i feel mor sorry for chelski in the ACoN - without drogba, they were s**t
pompeycarpet
burkina faso have as much right as anyone else to play international football tho dont they mate...
pompeyrug
Exactly Rug. Sarcastic or otherwise, it was still a bit of an ignorant thing to have said - especially since by all accounts, a lot of folks in Africa now see pompey as their EPL club too given the number of Africans from multiple nations that we have. Anyway, I'm sure they're a lot more entertaining to watch than any club we'd get to see out here (particularly LA Galaxy).

Harry has to accept that his players are going to jet off to all parts, i would rather that happen, than having to look forward to going to Layer Road or the like. Good players will be playing international football Harry accept it.
Owenspompey
sorry...nothing against berkina faso, although i don't actually know who went to play against them. unfortunalty, our playors will dissapear on international breaks - nothing we can do about it (other than buy non-intrnational quality playors...whichwould be plain stupid...)
pompeycarpet
to deal with the first line of your article pompeyrug, i also love our H but i also accpet him for the liying, scheming, cheating manipulative so and so that he is and he will; never take the blame for anything, but i dont think for this season at least i would swap him for anyone, so i think i am honest in my thoughts. HR has been going off the rails a bit lately and this is just another example. Pompeycarpet no offence mate but i am surprised that you would post such a comment, its almost as i i shall say "misplaced" as Harrys. if you are african playing for your country beating burkino faso is as important to you as us beating russia was for us, secondly if harry doesnt like it when africans play for their country dont buy them, he had plenty of opprortunity to buy those useless italians, spaniards, french or Giovanni etc, but chose to buy african.

i must stress, I AM having a pop at Harry, i travel to watch pompey everygame, i feel I AM entitled
russellm
You pay your money, your entitled to your opinion.
storagematt
Too true, Russ tell it how you see it, we are all entitled to say how we feel.
Owenspompey
LoL.... and another thing....
russellm
A couple of points fellas ... Yes international duty is a fact of life and we must accept it.... but.. I wouldn't let my players out of the dressing until we had had a full debrief (especially after the Arsenal game) ...... and I don't believe they ALL went immediately after the game and ALL got back on the Friday before Liverpool... Another point I agree with Russlm 'harry is a bit of ...umm Duke of Edinburgh ish at the mo... it worries me, but he's still 'the man' Finally, absoluetly no offence to the country or any of their players but I have not got a clue where Berkina Faso is ..... Obvioulsy makes me a muppet ....
Chix
ask 'arry mate, he know so he will tell you exactly where it is :)
pompeyrug
I thought everyone had heard of Burkina Faso, and it's unpronounceable capital Ouagadougou......
Tantona
Tantona - I really wasn't sure if you were serious or not... So I had to Wiki it and lo & behold Ouagadougou is the capital of Burkina Faso.... I've just read all about it and i now know where it is too !
Chix
Tantona never lies!
