Linvoy tips O'Neil for England

Linvoy Primus believes that his former Pompey teammate Gary O'Neil can earn himself an England call up after leaving for Boro.

Primus has told The News how he feels the change of scenery could make all the difference for O'Neil, with the change possibly bringing him back to the attention of Spineless Steve: 'The England set-up want to see what Gary can do and I think that's what's going to happen at Middlesbrough.

'I don't think he'd gone stale at Pompey, I just think that he knew what he could do, what he was capable of doing and sometimes you want a fresh challenge to see if you can go on any more.

'He's going to an environment where he knows who the players are but you know they want to see what you can do. I think he can get into the England team playing in a different scene, I really do.

'Imagine they finish in the top half of the table, seventh or eighth, if he's a big part of it it's obviously going to get him the attention'.

We were all sad to see O'Neil leave, but I think we are coming to terms with this now. We would also probably mostly agree that for the best of his career the move away was the best thing for him and it should rejuvenate his career.

Spineless Steve has previously mentioned him in a band of 50 players that he was watching, so regular football at the home of one of his favourites Stewart Downing should enhance his chances, so I would not bet against him still playing for England in the future - as I have always believed that he would.

O'Neil's departure after 10 years with the club now leaves Primus as the senior Pompey pro, with him now taking the mantle as the clubs longest serving player.

It's sad to say but moving away fom Pompey has probably enhanced his chances of Playing for England. Unfortuately there still seems to be a bias against our players though David James and Sol Campbell are doing their level best to break that down.

Dead right Steve. Only six Pompey players have appeared for England since the war and in that time we have won the Championship twice!! England are strong in midfield but GON has a chance and we all wish him well.

he couldnt have really gone to a better team could he, spineless steve's not so secret lover downing is there so o'neil should be watched plenty of times shouldnt he... tbh i am still not quite sure about this england bias against pompey players - on the whole we have not had the players that were good enough to play for england have we, lets be honest... good luck o'neil tho, if and when this call up comes i will be almost as proud as i would have been had he still been here.

Gary, i hope you realise your dream and play for your country, you deserve the chance, and i wish him all the best at the Boro. Gary will be sadly missed by us, and i hope he receives a warm welcome when he come s to Fratton to play for them.

I wish GON well, but can't see it happening..... He was going to struggle to hold down his place in Pompeys starting 11 this season - who from the england set-up do you leave out in midfied to accomodare him either in the middle or on the right ...... Stevie G, Lampard, Carrick, Hargreaves, Barry, SWP, Beckham, Lennon.... I'd love to see it but it aint gonna happen...... maybe a cap in a friendly at best...

dont be so quick to rule it out fellas... i know o'neil was highly thought of here but i still do not think that he was completly appreciated as being as good a footballer as he is/could still be...

At the present time he does not really stand a chance of getting a game for England, but Gareth Barry has proved that you can fight your way into the team. He has played well in the past two games and deserves the chance to stay in the team.

barry was fantastic in both games, i would have loved to have seen him here when we were in for him. the fact that he has not played more times for england is criminal.

I really hope he does well, except against us(what would he do with a penalty.....?). I agree with the above he's good but at the mo we are looking fantastic in midfield.

I would still bet that Barry will be dropped when Hargreaves and Lampard are fit. Spineless will have to find room for them and Rooney you watch. As much as i think Heskey can be a luxury i have to say that in these two games he did more than enough to warrant another start.
