Nugent looking for England recall

Much like most of us want for David Nugent, he just wants to be able to start focusing on his football. So he hopes that the transfer speculation can die down now so he can do just that - then force his way back into the England fold.

The Pompey Site say 'despite being overlooked by Steve McClaren for England's Euro 2008 qualifiers' he is targeting an England return. To be honest I cannot see how anyone can say he has been overlooked because although he is not in, he has not been overlooked really.

Yep, he is not in but he has not done enough to be in so I do not really see it as a case of being overlooked, merely not in contention. Overlooked implies a negative tone 'ignored' or 'disregarded', which are things that would be untrue.

To get this recall firstly he has to be at full confidence, playing regularly and playing well, as well as scoring goals all things he feels he can achieve, 'You have to be confident as a footballer otherwise you might as well not be playing.

'I'm a striker and I need to be scoring goals. I'm sure they'll come and when they do I'm sure I'll get a call up'.

This season has been a bit stop start for him, so although I am not saying he has played badly - as he has not - he just has not really got a rhythm going but most of this is down to the hounding he has received from the media, along with very, very small minorities of fans, the smallest of smallest minorities.

The fella is full ability, so he will start to show his very best for Pompey soon. The transfer talk still will not entirely go away, as loan moves are still suggested, but so long as he stays focused, does not try too hard - which he maybe has - and takes his chances when they come he will be fine.

Yep, England has to be his goal and he will get back in, but first and foremost he has to focus on his Pompey career and doing what he does best, playing well, keeping his movement levels high, playing as a team and scoring goals - doing this will then see his chance come up again.

Nugent will have to be patient for his chance, but much like all the other strikers currently with Pompey he has plenty to offer and he will get a chance, taking this chance is what he has to do - and he will.

Although I think he is well down the pecking order I'd like to see him get the chance again, it may be 3 or 4 years before it happens but he has time on his hands. Go on Nuge prove everybody wrong and start banging in the goals to prove what it takes.

Absolutely agree, we need to get behind the lad when he's given a chance, and I do hope Harry does that. He is a finisher and I am in no doubt that he is capable within the premiership. If that donkey Hesky can can an England call up then surely to god our lad will get a full cap soon.

It's all down to the next few months, if he starts scoring he'll be fine but if not he's out. Press has been on his back since he arrived and this will increase the longer he takes to score in Prem. Either shipped out on loan or sold in January. This is absolutely crazy! in my opinion, in all my time as a football fan I have never seen a new signing hounded this way. It's disgusting!!! Come on Nuge score and score loads!

Well he really has to knuckle down & show his worth for us before thinking of getting an England call up. He is still young & has time on his side.

According to his previous managers he is always prepared to learn and with his work ethic spot on he should not fail. Pompey just need to keep faith with him and bandy him about as for sale.

I really hope that David makes it with Pompey, he seems like a really decent bloke who wants to make it to the top. Harry is the type of manager who loves developing good players into better ones, and helping players who the press ridicule or have a go at and it would be great to hear him say i told you so to all those writers who dont give the lad a fair crack. We have had the slow developers here at Fratton before and thet generally come through for us in the end, the Aspinalls, the Walshs and the Whittinghams even John Aloisi, so hang in there David.

despite being "overlooked" i think he is the right kind of guy to be playing for england. he works hard, and he is honest with himslef - and he is a good playor. He recognises how big a thing it is too play for england, unlike some other playors (*cough* lampard *cough*). Good luck sccoring for us, and getting back to england!!!

im 100% behind nuge, stuff the media they love to build people up, but love knocking them down even more! nuge needs a fair crack of the whip, if he gets that - as i am sure and hope 'arry will give him - we have a legend in the making here...

Nugent is as good a striker as Heskey, here we go again long ball to Heskey and Owen looking for the knock on, substitute Heskey for Crouch, i bet the Israelis and the rest of the group are terrified.

carpet, how does Lampard qualify for that coughing moment???? He is out with a thigh tear(ouch) and I thought he was very good v germany at wembly a few weeks ago (i was there) and he has this rdiculous thing where England fans vehmently boo his name as it's read out BEFORE the game.

agreed mate, seems mroe than alittle harsh on lampard who to my mind has never not wanted to represent his country, he played in the germany game with a toe problem didnt he, whereas gerrard didnt did he? granted lampard and gerrard cannot play in the same side, but why lampard is being booed i cannot work out...

to my mind, when he was playing badly over the last few years (but well in the league) he just didn't seem to have his heart in the national game - and even though he was consistently playing badly, he was always picked, ahead of other playors who could have done a better job. Basicly, i think his whole persona radiates a sence of "waste of time" when he is on the pitch for england...although that could be becase he and gerrard are always fighting over the same balls.

people dont like lampard becuase of his world cup performances and the fact that he threw a complete tantrum when Becks was brought back. he was by all assessed as england's worst player and was playing for him self not the team And finally the clincher is... my girlfirend goes to his local pub and says quote "he behaves like an absolute tossser" .... what more evidence do you need i ask you?

and he started writing a book about why e3nglandf didnt succeeed in the world cup before the competition started, and he of course was blameless

clearly i do not know lampard as a person, but what i do know i dont particularly like, but his private life and fotoball life are kept seperate for me... im not saying what he does off the field, does not matter as it does, as he should have more respect for himself and others, but ultimately what he does on the pitch for england is my main concern and altho he was bad in the world cup he wasnt alone...

and yep, i too think england will win today - in the cricket, football and rugby! the football will be won 3-1, 2-1 something like that and i have a sneeky feeling heskey might just score and altho i do not want it think that there may be an error from robinson...

...and finaly england performed!!! - and to further my point, without lampard, but with someone who got in on merit - Gareth Barry - and better still, he set up 2 of the goals (if i remember correctly) - whilst Hesky was also impressive, as was micah richards, and seun write-philips. n fact, i would go as far to say that the playors who performed best were the ones who havnt been our consistent starters, and the ones who have earned there places in the team by performing well. point proven?

yep, i enjoyed the game tbh, something i cannot say i have about an england game for along time... heskey was brilliant, but i cannot see how spineless can name a squad with both crouchy and heskey in it too often as they are too similar and that type of player is not really the type of player you need to name that many of in a squad, in my opinion anyway... barry was also brilliant, wright-phillips the star of the show.

Nuge, you are as good as Andy Johnson mate, he has not looked like scoring for England, which at least you have done, being in the right place at the right time is what it is all about.
