Nugent looking for England recall

Nugent looking for England recall

Much like most of us want for David Nugent, he just wants to be able to start focusing on his football. So he hopes that the transfer speculation can die down now so he can do just that - then force his way back into the England fold.

The Pompey Site say 'despite being overlooked by Steve McClaren for England's Euro 2008 qualifiers' he is targeting an England return. To be honest I cannot see how anyone can say he has been overlooked because although he is not in, he has not been overlooked really.

Yep, he is not in but he has not done enough to be in so I do not really see it as a case of being overlooked, merely not in contention. Overlooked implies a negative tone 'ignored' or 'disregarded', which are things that would be untrue.

To get this recall firstly he has to be at full confidence, playing regularly and playing well, as well as scoring goals all things he feels he can achieve, 'You have to be confident as a footballer otherwise you might as well not be playing.

'I'm a striker and I need to be scoring goals. I'm sure they'll come and when they do I'm sure I'll get a call up'.

This season has been a bit stop start for him, so although I am not saying he has played badly - as he has not - he just has not really got a rhythm going but most of this is down to the hounding he has received from the media, along with very, very small minorities of fans, the smallest of smallest minorities.

The fella is full ability, so he will start to show his very best for Pompey soon. The transfer talk still will not entirely go away, as loan moves are still suggested, but so long as he stays focused, does not try too hard - which he maybe has - and takes his chances when they come he will be fine.

Yep, England has to be his goal and he will get back in, but first and foremost he has to focus on his Pompey career and doing what he does best, playing well, keeping his movement levels high, playing as a team and scoring goals - doing this will then see his chance come up again.

Nugent will have to be patient for his chance, but much like all the other strikers currently with Pompey he has plenty to offer and he will get a chance, taking this chance is what he has to do - and he will.

Although I think he is well down the pecking order I'd like to see him get the chance again, it may be 3 or 4 years before it happens but he has time on his hands. Go on Nuge prove everybody wrong and start banging in the goals to prove what it takes.

Absolutely agree, we need to get behind the lad when he's given a chance, and I do hope Harry does that. He is a finisher and I am in no doubt that he is capable within the premiership. If that donkey Hesky can can an England call up then surely to god our lad will get a full cap soon.

It's all down to the next few months, if he starts scoring he'll be fine but if not he's out. Press has been on his back since he arrived and this will increase the longer he takes to score in Prem. Either shipped out on loan or sold in January. This is absolutely crazy! in my opinion, in all my time as a football fan I have never seen a new signing hounded this way. It's disgusting!!! Come on Nuge score and score loads!

Well he really has to knuckle down & show his worth for us before thinking of getting an England call up. He is still young & has time on his side.

According to his previous managers he is always prepared to learn and with his work ethic spot on he should not fail. Pompey just need to keep faith with him and bandy him about as for sale.

I really hope that David makes it with Pompey, he seems like a really decent bloke who wants to make it to the top. Harry is the type of manager who loves developing good players into better ones, and helping players who the press ridicule or have a go at and it would be great to hear him say i told you so to all those writers who dont give the lad a fair crack. We have had the slow developers here at Fratton before and thet generally come through for us in the end, the Aspinalls, the Walshs and the Whittinghams even John Aloisi, so hang in there David.

despite being "overlooked" i think he is the right kind of guy to be playing for england. he works hard, and he is honest with himslef - and he is a good playor. He recognises how big a thing it is too play for england, unlike some other playors (*cough* lampard *cough*). Good luck sccoring for us, and getting back to england!!!

im 100% behind nuge, stuff the media they love to build people up, but love knocking them down even more! nuge needs a fair crack of the whip, if he gets that - as i am sure and hope 'arry will give him - we have a legend in the making here...

does he still qualify for the u21s or is he now too old!
07/09/2007 19:25:00
he is 22 - so no. although he should be good enough for the national side, whe his confidence is up a bit - hes better than hesky anyway!

Cook's already said the loan Tollitt is undertaking with Tranmere doesn't mean an end to his Pompey career as this isn't a forerunner to a Blues exit in the New Year.
