What a transfer window on the whole

What a transfer window on the whole

Some 24 hours and a bottle of Vodka later, despite my initially downcast views, on reflection what a great summer transfer window it has been for Pompey - come on we cannot deny this!

Friday was a bitterly disappointing day for most of us, not just me, with the comings and goings no way, no matter what anyone says, improving us - but looking at the bigger picture, the 3 months of the transfer window as a whole and not just the 1 day of Friday, the transfer dealings that Pompey have undertaken have been phenomenal.

For Pompey to have spent close to £30m in 3 months to sign, or re sign players of the quality that we have is almost unthinkable, as is the transformation that Pompey have undergone in the past 12-18 months - all of which has been beyond most of our wildest dreams.

Yep, one or two people - particularly Gary O'Neil - leaving have been almost heart breaking, but when you evaluate the whole transfer window taking into account some of the dead wood that has been offloaded and some of the money recouped for those leaving etc. on the whole those that have come in far outweigh those that have gone in terms of quality and where they could take us.

We will probably face further difficult decisions being made in time, but so long as they are all part of the longer term plans to take us to incredible new heights, as disappointing as they may initially seem the longer-term picture for this club will shine through.

Onwards and upwards now for Pompey, disappointment has been put aside and reflection of the overall quality that the whole transfer window has seen us bring in leaves me very pleased with everything that has happened since June - and where it leaves us, not to mention where it could take us.

Rug I agree wholeheartedly. However the owrd on the streets seems to be different. The loss of GON and the recent acquisition of Johnson and Diop has upset people they are not as you say looking at the complete picture. Johnson needs to hit last seasons early form and Diop to be Diop to win the moaners over.

trust me i am so disappointed, angry even, about what happened on friday as i think the coming and going were terrible - in terms of actually improving the team. anyone that says the fellas that went and the fellas the came in meant we improved on that particular day is talking out of their rear end... i could have easily just kept that thought, as could we all, but we have to view the bigger picture dont we, the transfer window stretched over 90 odd days, not just the 1, which was shocking...

on the whole we got to be pleased with signings Kanu, Utaka , Muntari, Cranie, Two young fellas for the youth team, H****son -cant spell it, well he's ok, and Distan and the others, Weve trimmed out with Griffin,Obrian,Toddy and big Dej as well as sadly lua lua,but for his sake i think this is a good move for him. Initially I was extremely sad/angry that GoN had gone to the Average Red Band...and Johnson is over rated..but in all fairness a good aquisition..Now in the calm light of day i have to reflect on my wifes sentence that she often seems to use- She has no interest in footie-" Harry knows best, thats why he manages Pompey and you don't"and with that i expect there is a good chance PBDiop will turn out to be a good fact GoN has frustratedme with a couple of nailed on oal chances this season that is how Im coping with it..We should have got another non Afican striker because we only have Nuge- i think- now, who is going to have to prove himself...

we have nuge, and benji will still be with us come the ACoN. and i really wouldnt ut it past us to get another - at least on loan - in january when our playors all leave. Actually, looking at GoNs move, why did he go to boro? last season was far from his best, and he would never have a place in the team ahead of utaka, and all the centrle midfielders we have - so for his sake, it was probably a good move - and we might not even miss him too much...untill the injuries start to come in...

Well Rug...I gotta say, On an ability basis, I dont see that lossing Steff an gaining GJ is a step back at all.As we all know Harry is one of the best in the game at taking someone whos a bit "Raggid" with talent, & turning then in to a top player...I loved steff as much as the next man, but people where on this site only months ago saying we didnt need him!....losing Steff (32, 34?) and gaining GJ who has much more ability..granted if channeled correctly, & in his early twenties, makes absoultey perfect sense to me! Ive said before, I love Gary, but was the guy gonna get a game at pomepy now??? prob not..& if he did it would be at his non scoring right of mid, thats out of possition for him!...if anyone sells him in the future for more than 5 mil I'll eat my hat....that was good money for Gary, a player that with our current squad was not going to be utilized to the best. Diop? were just gonna have to wait & see! :)

oh well gario can have a half decent season and sign for everton next year
02/09/2007 10:24:00
dejan had to go, he wasnt going to get a game and i think it showed for fulham yesterday that he is going to struggle in the premiership now - granted he hasnt played since pre season so he would be alittle rusty... johnson has the ability to be international class, but he has lost his way badly over the last few yrs and i worry about his ability to get back to that level? his attitude and commitment needs to change, if it does then i completely agree we have a great english talent on our hands. tbh i still think that o'neil is a much better player than he is given credit for, he would do a job right or middle and would have still been in the team more often than not if i were picking it - but im probably biased :) that said £5m for him was good business but diop couldnt even get into the fulham side, so if he couldnt get into the fulham side if he finds himself in our side week in week out then we really cannot have been as good as i thought we were... yep, i will give the fella a chance but would i have him in the middle ahead of muntari, mendes or even davis - i would say no tbh. 'arry will prob have him lined up or away games when he wants extra 'beef' in midfield.

Charlie it seems that Boro see GON as curing thier problem on the right side of midfield, a position Gary dislikes as you say. I think Pompey fans will love Diop's style of play - taking no prisoners perhaps begins to describe him!

I think GJ will do okay this season. That said just watched MoTD and DJ looked shocking for Fulham and sat there feeling smug about a good bit of business by Pompey, goal of the month came on and I saw why Chelski sold GJ. TBH Harry will need to work his magic but if anyone can he can. Still can't get over POMPEY and £30M!!!!!

I thought Dej looked awful in the highlights on MotD. Just shows you how things change, 3 years ago I was gutted we couldn't sign Smertin but yesterday he looked very poor. It shows how far we have moved on in terms of quality of players at the club. I'm sure The Smurf will be fine, it's just that a lot of us will see him as the reason gOn was sold. I wonder if he knows? Good to see Toddy score for Charlton.

Chesterfield's O'Shea targeted

Although so far Pompey have had two bids turned down for Chesterfield's O'Shea. Will, assuming another bid (as it's expected) is made, it be third time luck for the Blues?

It wasn't Real Madrid but Bristol City isn't bad!

Contrary to what I just wrote (muppet that I am) this isn't at Fratton this is at Ashton Gate with Pompey heading to Bristol City on Saturday 30th July, with a 3pm kick-off.

Liverpool goalie keen on Pompey return

Will he get this chance though? I think we could quite safely say he'll not be in the Liverpool 1st team next season and Pompey want a goalie so could this be Ryan Fulton...
