Pompey sign Glen Johnson

The first player to arrive at Pompey today is Glen Johnson.

The England international has signed a 4 year contract for an undisclosed amount, thought to be around 3m, arriving from Chelsea.

I said earlier that 'I would not particularly want him back, as I was not that impressed with him when he was on loan last season. He started well but seemed to take his almost 'guaranteed' first team spot for granted'.

But I also said 'if he does come back clearly I will get behind the fella', which I will. Hopefully he has grown up, which should help his apparent lack of concentration, which more than lets him down at times.

One of the most positive things about this move is that Harry Redknapp has signed British, better still English.

So that is one in, but will there be more?

you've done well this summer, who in total have you guys signed?
The Fear
Great news all round. Fulham fans seem delighted to have Stefanovic and we sign Johnson which frees up Lauren's position and we have more cover for midfield.
stillthewhizz
Whilst we heard about it yesterday I'm really not sure about this one, chelsea didnt like his attitude and last year neither did Harry. GJ has said he didnt want to come back to a small club and refused to be loaned back . seems like a bit of a panic cover buy, maybe we sold him the look we have england players and you could be one of them spiel.
russellm
one in one out so far, what i would like to see next is one in NONE OUT, god i need the toilet again
russellm
Utaka Muntari Nugent Johnson Mvuemba Hreidasson Distin Cranie And to some extent we signed Kanu as well. More fantastic signings to come..... Kone joining Sevilla might make Kanoute available.
stillthewhizz
Russ hope you are back from the toilet OK. Thewhizz suggests cover players and I worry that it will cover right side and GON will go.
eastneydave
great signing, i love the last day of deadline its exiting lol, hope 2 see a striker come in and hope no1 else goes E.G dave nugert PUP
pompeydave14
eastneydave: I doubt GON or MT will leave. While I'd love to see us plump up the cash for Kanoute, I think it's too late in the day for us to sell someone and for Harry to muster up his speech about Pompey are going places... It's going to be Diarra or Diop as our last signing.
stillthewhizz
tbh ive made it clear that im not sure but if he gets his attitude right he could become a star again. so it is potentially a great signing - just keep him away from the toilet fixtures and fittings!
pompeyrug
kanoute's new contract included a 17m release clause didnt it - so this isnt going to happen. maybe im relaxing too soon but im having a good feeling that matty taylor will stay, not so sure about o'neil now tho, but i hope beyond hope that both, aswell as nugent stay.
pompeyrug
Should be a good signing if he gets his head focused on the job. However, it does make me worry about Mendes' (rather than GON, eastneydave) future at Pompey now though, with Harry's liking for playing Lauren in midfield and those Villa rumours...and the fact he's in and out of the team at the moment (regardless of injuries).. Hope I'm wrong though..
Pompeysweden
Russ if you need a toilet seat for that toilet, my mate Glen Boggy Johnson is the man to talk to.
Midge
He wont be automatic choice this time round, so will have to work for his possition. Im hopefull that will = the Old Johnson that started 3 seasons last year a class above, before he lost his focus and to be honest was utter rubbish. Time will tell, and i trust Harry to be seeing things that give him hope.
Midge
you often get a surprise dont you, so maybe mendes leaving will be the surprise - but i dont think so. i think he is a brilliant footballer and have told people that i thought he was 'too good' to play for pompey, so if that is the case he is too good, with repsect, for villa, but money talks...
pompeyrug
Young player goes off the rails needs to be sorted out in the head and on the field who you gonna call? HR has done it before many times although perhaps not with one so young. Mendes too good for Pompey he was but not now we are on the up.
eastneydave
Kanoute's release clause is something they have to do in Spain and apparently they only ever set them high to prevent rival teams coming in. Torres' release clause was a lot higher than the fee Liverpool paid (if that's possible!).
stillthewhizz
hope Mendes doesnt go, he is the real class in midfield, but i think it is O'neil the rumour my mate Boro steve is touting is that Gary O'neil is expected at teeside airport about 2 ish this afternoon. loss of captaincy, new midfield, i think this story has as they say some legs
russellm
erm reality check please, its highly unlikely to be kanoute, we couldnt afford Yak, we cant afford the straight 10m Defoe, where are we going to find 15.9m for kanoute, or has sasha just discovered he left a lot of loose change down the sofa. Not sure i want crouch, i will never forget he said on south today that he " much preferred southampton to pompey".
russellm
god where is Glen Boggy Johnson when you need him?
russellm
russ - Players will say anything to please their current fans - there's no loyalty in football anymore. As I said - it's unlikely we'd sign Kanoute because we'd have to sell one of GON or MT and I don't think Harry wants to. But Kanoute must be more available now after Sevilla signed Kone.
stillthewhizz
dont really much want kanoute here anyway tbh - was never that sold on him when he was touted before...
pompeyrug
re Kanoute i was wondering was wondering about his former strike partner. re crouch he said that when on a charity bash, he had already signed for liverpool
russellm
im more worried about the o'neil leaving for boro talk than much else now... so crouchy said that he prefered scum after he had left them? but again he was just prob trying to please their fans as he had just left them.
pompeyrug
This is a terrific bit of business. In Johnson and Cranie, we now have two young defenders who could be half of England's future back four. I think Johnson and Matty as wing backs anchored by Sol, Linvoy and Distin would be a great option too, and Lauren isn't too shabby in midfield either. Well done Arry...now don't do anything rash...at least until January.
Toronto4Pompey
I think you mean fan pompeyrug!!!!
SaintRug
no, you have at least two fans as there is you and i know a scummer that i used to work with :)
pompeyrug
Im pretty please...but I still think GJ is a little suspect at times, still 3 mil for a world class young, defender is pretty damn good! I like GJ playin on Right of mid..any takers?
CharlieChimes
If O'Neil does move, then GJ here can move Lauren into midfield. Lots of choice all the while.
Lysimachus
very true! I love Gary O, as does everyone, but stricktly buisness, if we get better players in Im all for it!!
CharlieChimes
Oh no, not johnson, thought we'd seen the back of him when he went back to chelsea. I remember the cup game at old trafford when lots of us were telling johnson to go back to chelsea. Hope his attitude is better this time, and i hope he concentrates more. Gutted to see GON go. Will it be Defoe coming in???
pompey4me
as much as people do acknowledge how good o'neil is, i still feel that his true value is being slightly underrated... he will work tirelessly but is also a bloody good footballer so it is going to have to be someone exceptional to replace him, lauren or johnson playing on the right are not the replacement. even centrally o'neil is as good as virtually anyone at this club...
pompeyrug
I think Johnson needs to win over a lot of fans - his performances towards the end of last season were below par/average at best - maybe hell come down to earth with a bump - Might do him good, he certainly has the talebt its the attitude that worries me - Oh well hes a Pompey player now so behind him I'll get...
Chix
Why does below par mean poor ...... isn'yt below par, good in the golfing world .... I've got myself in a right muddle ...... wish I had just typed 'ok'
Chix
Consistency. Well consistently good rather than last years consistently mediocre. Buck yer ideas up, B and Q boy, or you'll spend the season in the reserves! Oh, and I'm available for house renovations, am a qualified plumber and general DIY'er.
Et_tu_Pompeii
crap so far, GON out for what, Johnson (crap) and booba dooba diop.
pompey4me
Glen Johnson is a good signing for the club. GJ can make some dodgy decisions but he will mature and become a natural replacement for big Sol when he moves on.
AussieBlue
so you think he could be converted into a central defender mate? adams, sol and everyone else will have to work very hard on his concentration levels for this. i still think that he may be better suited to a midfield role myself as he is brilliant coming forward, but has some shockers as a defender. yep, he could be a very good signing but has alot to prove to alot of people tbh - which i clearly hope he does.
pompeyrug
Aussieblue, not being funny mate, i sat and watched him close last year. He plays (was gonna say defends, but......) right in front of me, and the bloke sucks. Bad defender, bad attitude, bad signing.
pompey4me
i would agree completely mate - he started okay but soon became complacent with the fact he 'knew' he would play virtually week in week out when he was fit. he has not been a good player for several years, but clearly i hope he can reclaim this - but he hwas some work to do doesnt he...
pompeyrug
I hope you lot cope well with his lack of concentration!
merlin
What a difference a year makes. Last year welcomed with 'What a coup', 'Great signing' and now despair and gloom. Same player just needs to reinvent himself.
