John Utaka to top the scoring charts

John Utaka will be Pompey's top goalscorer this season! Not my vote, yours - although these findings from pompey4me's poll are thoughts that I could easily share, but were not the way I voted personally.

The Nigerian forward, who although Harry Redknapp keeps saying wants to be played as an out and out striker has seemed more than comfortable wide left or right, with the early performances also bringing goals.

2 goals in 4 matches at the start of his Pompey career has seen things start very well, so his pace and power seem to suggest he has plenty more left in the tank - so we should well see plenty more goals from him between now and May, which could easily see him finish as our top scorer.

My own vote went to David Nugent, as my thinking is once he scores that first goal - watch out Leeds on Tuesday! - there will be no stopping him as his confidence will soar.

What the poll asked - Who do you think will finish as this seasons top scorer?

How you voted - Utaka 41%, Benjani 25%, We've not signed him yet 12%, Nugent 11%, Kanu 9%, Taylor 1%, Other 1%

Current Poll - Pompey had their first England call ups for more than 20 years recently, then last week David James became the first Pompey star to win an England cap for 23 years.

It was great to see not one, but two call ups for the national side, but many could not help but think that maybe there should have been at least one more, with this man being Matty Taylor.

With injuries to contend with Nicky Shorey was the preferred option, but did not seem to do himself that much credit, so should Taylor have been in instead - that is what Maniak101 wants to know? 'Should McClaren have brought in Matty Taylor instead of Shorey for the recent game against Germany?' Let the poll do the talking before we do when it finishes.

i voted in the 12% cos i dont think Utaka will be prolific, but if we have 4 players in double figures i wont be complaining if i am wrong. The other point a gooner fan and i were discussing and drunkenly agreeing with each other is that the two england call ups with the word portsmouth adjacent the player does make a difference to the way other fans and particularly players view the club.
russellm
LoL, i should explain the tenuous link was that the gooner thought my 12 goal season was wrong and Utaka will be in the 17 goals a season range, then we moved onto England
russellm
benji, kanu, nugent and utaka could all quite possibly get into double figures - and tbh i think they will! yep, england call ups will see england viewed in a different light, if this keeps happening for a while longer even more players will be fancying trying gthe blue shirt on for size - defoe's head must be well and truly turned by now...
pompeyrug
if you are right Rug, that would see us needing passports, so early days yet and probably best not to tempt fate with the "E" word
russellm
im including cup, as well as league goals in these amounts too tho :) that is another reminder, my passport runs out in october - i must get it renewed as i am sure i will need it sometime in the next few years...
pompeyrug
Here's hoping at least one get 15+ & a few others close to 10.

So, who do you think the one we havnt signed yet is. I would love it to be defoe. I voted Benji in the poll cos i just think it's going better for him this year, would love to see that come true rug, 4 pompey players in double figures....yahooo, off to check my passport too!!haha.
pompey4me
if you look at it this way 30-40 appearances minimum - including sub appearances - for most should be possible, so at least 10 goals should be possible shouldnt it, an average of 1 in 4, achievable? if we got anelka, defoe or lita as the one that we have not signed yet i would be happy.
pompeyrug
Liked russellms original comment - but what does an Araenal fan know about the benefit of having a club name against a players name on an England teamsheet. Anybody since Ashley Cole... unless I am missing somebody obvious - It is late !
Chix
Nice one Chix - Arsenal have given up on English players altogether now. I voted for Benji but think and hope it will be close.
