Redknapp clarifies Nugent position

There has been so much talk and 'gossip' that David Nugent could leave Pompey - with some even saying that they would want him sold!

Harry Redknapp has confirmed on the Pompey Site that Derby do want him but he says he is going nowhere 'Derby do want to sign David Nugent, I think that is a fairly well known fact. But he's only just joined us and I'm happy to keep him here.

'He's a young player and obviously he wants to play but at the moment Kanu's playing absolutely brilliant, Utaka's a threat and Benjani's done well, so David's going to have to be patient'.

Nugent is going to be a star, of that I have no doubt at all, so with him only in his early 20's he has many, many years ahead of him so the thought that he might be sold already is just ridiculous. Ideas that we should sell him ludicrous!

Competition for places at Pompey is good and will only benefit the side, so when Nugent gets back in he will have to take his chance - this does not necessarily mean he has to score - which if he plays well he will stay in the team, the same rules apply to everyone.

We all know how highly Redknapp rates Kanu and the fella has been, like Redknapp says 'absolutely brilliant' the last couple of games, so how could he be left out.

Nugent has the best movement that I have seen for a long time, movement that I have not seen many possess - particularly in a Pompey shirt for sometime, but people like Kanu can teach him so much more, so simply watching him from the bench will help him, as will training with him.

My thinking has been that Nugent has simply been trying too hard, although he was not 'dropped' for the Bolton game as the media claimed, it was simply a case of Redknapp trying a different option, with the option paying off so he could not alter it.

With Leeds at Fratton in the league cup this week I think it is the perfect opportunity for Nugent to start again, which I think he will, so although the pressure is not on him to score if he goes out simply to enjoy the game, without forcing it I think we will see a fine performance from him and quite possible a goal or two.

Leeds will be a good chance for him to get into the swing, i'm with Harry and think he willbe a great player for us. Hes young and a 6mill price tag puts a lot of pressure on him. Players don't always make the step up straight away take a look at the likes of Peter Crouch. one things for sure Harry is the right man to help him make a successful career with Pompey. All Nugent has to do is concentrate on getting into the right positions and the goals will come for him. As fans we can help him by recognising the hard work he does the way we did with Benjani. Once he starts scoring he's going to be very hard to stop. What i find hard to believe is that some people are prepared to right him off already with some even suggesting the club should let him go for 4.5million. What are these people on?

whatever these people are on mate - im glad the vast majority of us are not on it too!

Well said lads, the guy deserves the chance to prove himself and we as supporters of the team need to stay right behind him. He is a real trier and like Benjy he works hard and has great awareness of his colleagues. I hope he plays against Leeds and then silences any critics with a goal or two. What would he get out of a move to Derby?

Absolute piffle to talk about selling nugent, probably the same prat who is prattling on in the forum about selling Muntari. Get a grip, Get a life!! go and support some other team, people like them make my blood boil!!

I don't blame Derby for trying to get Nugent, they must be kicking themselves for not getting into the transfer market sooner. Well done Pompey for identifying their targets early and going all out for them. Maybe Derby could try unsettling Lee Trundle or something now

I agree with all your comments. It is a sad state of affairs when a Premier League manager has to go on record in the media to discredit speculation started in the media about a young English striker. What absolute B******'s, gutter press at it's worse. The lad has just moved to a Premier League team miles away from his family, just starting to find his feet and bang! We are going to sell him to god knows who, he's been sensationally dropped (to the bench) If his confidence wasn't a problem, I bet that headline really helped him. He's a good lad and will be a great Pompey player, his movement is fantastic and he will score for us. Leeds had better be ready. End of rant!!!

Cracking Rant LL Blue, I enjoyed it so much i read it twice... seriously. What I will add to the debate though is that Nugent knows it is not going to be easy and he's aware things will take time. From speaking to his Dad (sorry fellas but it has been at least a week since I mentioned it) I know that Nuge will not be affected by this paper 'piffle' (love that word pompey4me) he will just get his head down and work hard and when his chance comes along he'll try his best to take it. His example is Benji and to be honest what better player to try and emulate. It is with these facts that I am 100% certain that Nuge will come good and at some stage (whenever that is) he will delight in the fact that his name will ring around FP

good points made by all, as long as Harry wants him, Nugent will feel the pressure and whilst we as pompey fans are widely regarded as passionate and aggresive Nugent needs to be reminded we stuck by Yak, and Benjani. I hope he starts against leeds as much as anything because HR has said it is a squad team and he should stick to his word.

'arry has already said that kanu will be rested against leeds - so i cannot see anything other than a nugent start against leeds.
pompeyrug
Oh how money changes everything ! Nobody who has a clue about this team would want to ship out a young player with that much talent, not even a full month in to the season. If he's frustrated at not playing, terrific...it'll mean he's that much hungrier when he does get to play. The Leeds game is an ideal new start for him as one of you has already said. By the way, in case anyone's be paying attention, Leeds have been on a bit of tear so Nuge better get us a couple of goals !! Another good article Rugster.
Toronto4Pompey
Let Nugent start Harry and i am sure he will get the job done, Kanu needs to be rested to be ready for the game against Arsenal, Nugent needs a boost of confidence and the satisfaction of a goal. He will be determined to prove his doubters wrong and i know the crowd will be behind him.
