James targets the England no.1 spot

James targets the England no.1 spot

I have to admit that even though his form was so good and I knew it, you knew it and so many others knew it I had given up hope of David James being recalled for England, as I would suggest many, if not all of us had but it came, he played and once again he has his sights on reclaiming the no.1 spot from Paul Robinson.

Those of us that are regular watchers of James, which will be all of us Pompey fans, know just how great - and that is no over exaggeration - he has been over the past year or so, yet some still cannot see this, which in a way you can understand as they might not watch him week in week out. I have a Liverpool supporting friend who still cannot seem to get past the fact that James lost his 'calamity' tag, long ago, in all fairness before he even came to Pompey! When I told him I had selected him for my fantasy football team he could not believe it.

I like to think that I do view the picture on the grander scale of things but can truthfully say that if there was a better keeper in the Premiership last season I did not see him, even though Edwin Van Der Sar found himself voted as the top keeper in the PFA team of the year - funny how that side was made up of mostly title winning United players though.

Again, those of us that are regular readers of the new and improved Pompey Site and viewers of PFCtv - which I must say is fantastic, after some early teething problems - we will know that James has never once given up hope of a recall, with him always saying he believed he was good enough to get back in, then if he did he would take the steps up the ladder required to again become England's no.1.

After being overlooked for whatever reason for over a year his chance came and he played last night, in a dramatic turn of events my thinking is that after Robinson's error last night that James is probably favourite to complete his return by stepping right up to the top of the ladder by starting England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel in a couple of weeks time.

I will be honest I really do feel for Robinson, as like any goalkeeper he will be judged on the errors he makes, rather than the great saves he pulls off.

He is a top class keeper but he has looked very nervous for England recently. How it would affect him if James did come out of the wilderness to reclaim that no.1 jersey only time would tell, but even though he is 37 years old now, I still think he is good enough, fit enough and hungry enough to play a part in the long term future, so there is only one person I would want between the sticks for England now and that is David James - and he is again sounding more confident than even that he will be again in a couple of weeks time.

Englands number one

And after the performance of Robinson again last night who has been getting worse by the week, why not put James back between the sticks nobody can say he hasn't played well for you over the last couple of years.

There is absolutely who should be number one not only after last nights goof but on club form over the last twelve months. Yes Robinson is a good keeper but has no confidence at present. Restore Jamo to the number 1 shirt now!!

James was lucky last night when he rushed out and the german forward sliced his lob. If that had gone in people would have asked questions about him aswell as Robinson.(and lets be honest, it won't take long for him to ***** up if he gets back in especially with a dog ***** defense infront of him that doesn't close down at the edge of the box and leaves people unmarked in the box) The problem is McClaren. The mans an idiot.

McClaren an idiot ? Gets my vote - But is it the the back fours talent or the way they play that's the problem ? Thought Shorey looked average, Richards did well, Rio never gives me confidence and Terry ... well if he continues to lead by example we're going find the up coming games difficult - That said it was only a friendly and a pretty entertaining (at times) one at that. But back to the point. I think we should worry about James when or if he *****s up - I only recall one slip last season (away to Bolton I think) Robinson made Lehman look good last night !

yep, jamo was lucky to get away with the rush of blood to the head but the simple fact is he did get away with it. as said keepers are judged on mistakes, robinson's recently have proved costly... jamo has no two ways about it been the best keeper in england for over a year and needs to be back in goal where he should have been for this time. tbh i was not sure on jamo when he arrived as until i saw him week in week out altho i knew he had improved dramatically since his earlier years i could still not really - if being honest - see all the great saves he made, could only remember the errors... i am so glad that we did sign him tho and wouldnt swap him for anyone.

englands #1 - you are having a laugh!
24/08/2007 21:47:00
so you are one of the 'i refuse to believe that jamo is not the player he once was' people then mate...
24/08/2007 23:49:00
I was at the england game. what a stadium....the best bit about the game!! Jamo should not have come as far as he did, but is that what put the german off?? Seeing 6'4" of muslce sprinting at me would make me slice my to speak! The only other shame was that he had nothing else to do. It did bring a joy to my heart to see a pompey player in england colours!! Still made a week away of it and listened to the chelsea game on the way home. Play Up Pompey!

good point mate - that could well have put the german fella off. i wonder if what happened to robinson would have happened to jamo had he started? i would like to think no, but thankfully we will not have to worry about that.

Pompey 1-0 Bury - report & highlights

Well, that was a case of 'job done' on Saturday really, right? Far from our best, in a game that wasn't great, but Pompey did enough to edge out struggling Bury 1-0 at Fratton Park.

You always need scrappy wins

I am keen to be entertained when I go to football, which hopefully results in a Pompey win. However, at times you accept the points are the main thing - like Bury on Saturday.
