David James plays for England

We had wait more than 20 years for a Pompey player to be given an England call up, then last week we got two when David James and Sol Campbell were recalled. Unfortunately injury forced Campbell to withdraw but James remained and played his part in the 2-1 defeat against Germany tonight.

Paul Robinson, who knows the pressure is now on him unfortunately for him and England, possibly fortunately for James was at fault for the German equaliser and looked a little shaky, started the match - but James got his chance and came on at half time with England 2-1 down, after taking an early lead through Frank Lampard.

This makes James the first Pompey player to play for England since Mark Hateley in 1984. Hopefully we will see him retained for the Euro 2008 qualifiers - which I am almost 100% convinced we will - along with Campbell and quite possibly others?

As for his performance itself he did not really have anything to do but did set away a couple of England breaks with trademark long throws to wide areas and as always looked commanding of his area, although he did get lucky in the 65th minute when he came out and got stranded in no mans land, fortunately for him and England the German lob was way off target.

He was credited with an injury time tip over, but to be honest I thought it deflected off a defender - but I am sure he will take the save.

Robinson's mistake had no influence on James' coming on at half time, as this was always likely to be the case, but should James retain his form for us between now and the Euro 2008 qualifiers he will not only be part of that squad, which you would think he will, but could quite possibly become England's no.1 again?

A proud moment for Pompey fans tonight! I remember the last time too! Thought Shorey had a really bad game tonight he had no idea going forward, how is Taylor not in that team? Thought we looked pretty clueless as a team, just like Boro used too!

A great day for Jamo & we bask in his glory. Little to do but may get the nod for the Israel game.
storagematt
Just wait until he picks up a nasty injury when on international duty, let´s see how fun you think that is...
Blue is the colour
i would rather not think about picking up injuries on international duty mate - would rather focus on the positives of actually having england internationals, as pompey dont get many... yep, it is a proud day for us ans like you storage i will bask in his glory - as we all will like you say. as for the game we didnt look up to much on the whole did we, if he plays well between now and the squad being named i will find it hard to believe that matty taylor wont get a call.

Well done Jamo - but well done too to Pompeys offical site - according to them it was only 13 years ago that we had an Englamd international ... now either we have got it wrong in this forum or Pompeys have a problem with their calculator.... Or maybe we are all just 10 years younger... ahh to be in my twenties again.. no wife,no kids, money in my pocket....I'm drifting off to days spent on a sunkissed beach... Somebody wake me up before we kick off against Chelsea

yep i saw that too mate and could not help but have a chuckle... i know the time can fly by these days but not even 10 yrs can be lost that quickly, i wonder if they have now changed it?
pompeyrug
nope they still have not changed it, uit is still saying 13 yrs ago...

Mark Hateley made his England debut and a sustitute against USSR at Wembly on 2 June 1984. He then started and SCORED against Brazil on 10 June in the famous Maracana Stadium. England won 2-0 with John Barnes scoring a famous goal after a long crossfield run. Hateley's performance alerted AC Milan who paid £915,000 for his services and promised a friendly. We never got the friendly and there were rumours at the time not all the money. (most of that was from memory)

Sorry for typos in the above. Surely, on the subject of the rest of the side, Taylor is better than Shorey and Barry and GON could add a great deal of endeavour to the midfield. And what was Keiron Dyer doing in the squad let alone on the pitch?
eastneydave
we can deal with your typos mate - its something else when it is the official pompey site making mistakes like that :) ive said it before but his name says it all - dyer...
