The England wait ends for Pompey

It had been hoped that England might come calling for at least one Pompey player for the friendly with Germany and Spineless Steve has - and not just for one but two Pompey players!

David James and Sol Campbell had been offered a glimmer of hope of ending their yearlong international exile but injury seemed to end Campbell's hopes, with yet another oversight for James feared.

However both James and Campbell have been recalled.

This makes them the first Pompey players called up for England in more than 20 years - since Mark Hateley in 1984.

Matty Taylor was seen as a good shout for a crack at the left hand side of England's midfield but the fact that he has not started a match this season, even though he came on to some success in front of Spineless Steve in midweek, did not help his chances, so his call will have to wait a while longer - hopefully this will come with him still a Pompey player?

Injury to Wayne Rooney and lack of fitness for Michael Owen, had led many to believe that David Nugent would be given another chance, however this has again not been the case and his chance - which will come I am sure - will have to wait also.

So there we have it, after 23 years of waiting for this England call up will have had not one, but two in one sitting - well done James and Campbell, fully deserved particularly James.

It is a shame that Taylor and/or Nugent could not have joined them, but we cannot be greedy. At least Pompey can benefit exclusively as a result - in both cases hopefully, although the 'Taylor to leave' talk is really picking up. We also do not need to fear others 'taping up' our younger players when on international duty - for a little while longer at least.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

:-) Agreed, its nice to see Pompey have finally broke the Duck after more years, than a lot of our fans ages. About bloody time.
Midge
and vital pompey were able to make it an 'exclusive' too as it was on here before anywhere else - altho technically the 3:04pm time tied with the bbc :) this was in part thanks to Midge!
pompeyrug
maybe greedy i know, but i think nugent is abit unlucky not to get in - altho as russ has just told me, via text, the bar has been raised, so he needs to step up to the plate fully 1st, but he will. at least he didnt miss out to emile heskey - now that would have been criminal!
pompeyrug
Hooray!!! Might have a pint tonight to celebrate...then I usually do on Fridays. Suggests Sol will be fit for tomorrow.
eastneydave
yep, lets hope so mate as that is the most important thing for pompey isnt it. altho spineless does seem to have just brought a whole load of players in even if they wont be playing - so i am thinking that this quite possibly means that sol - and jamo of course - are in his plans beyond germany too...
pompeyrug
ok which one of you shoved your d~ck up spinless steve's ars to act as a make shift back bone, cmon now own up
russellm
ha ha!!! new he had to give in at some point!! I gotta say though, after MacLaren left an answer machine message dumping Sol
CharlieChimes
I would have made him sweat a little! anyways, well done Boys!! what about Matty next??
CharlieChimes
Well done lads - just listening to Sol just now on the radio, thinks he will be out for a week, putting him out of the Bolton game, and the England match too.. :-( Hope James gets a half from McTw@t - not a lot of point calling him up otherwise, would be a token effort.. Lets hope Nugent gets off the mark and gets himself a place back in the squad soon too!
scott mc
Hurrah (my 1st post that has appeared) - many thanks to "J" and also to PompeyRug for getting my a/c sorted - cheers lads!
scott mc
Welcome to Vital Scott. Big day to make your debut!!
eastneydave
Yeah, welcome Scott....Just a comment on Nugent, hes work rate was great on Wens, but he didnt really get a look in did he? & the only real opportunites he got, he blew! Still, Im keepin the faith..& Bolton's new look leaky back line would be a great place to start!!..I recon we can wollop em!!!!! 4-0...just like back in the day...
CharlieChimes
Cheers for the welcome! Have a feeling Nugent will get off the mark tomorrow lunchtime also - Bolton's defence "ain't what it used to be".. Need those 3 points going into Chelsea and Arsenal away..!
scott mc
i think 4-0 is a bit steep, im thinking 3-0 and Lawro thinks 2-0 and i have sneaking suspision that he will be right. Intresting comment he made on the radio today, he also thinks benji looks confident for the first time.
russellm
I worry our players will get the england injury curse, although i note with all his international anticipation Sol got in early :-). it means he cant play but should be ready for Chelsea and Arsenal.
russellm
Need the win about time we stuffed the Trotters. Good to see the England callups even if it a 28 man squad.
storagematt
not a prob scott mc, glad it could be sorted for you mate... is this just wishful thinking on my part or does sol's call up - even tho he will prob miss the game - suggest to anyone else that he will quite probably be in the squad for the euro 2008 qualifyers too? jamo is owed at least a half against germany for the last year he has been overlooked!
pompeyrug
Going up to the England Germany game with the wife and kids, how we would love to see both our heroes play, but i think Sol will be out, so hopefully my youngest Heroe Jamo (bloody nice guy) will play. PUP
pompey4me
I saw Taylors name come up as a new cap and thought surely not? No, it was Steven bloody Taylor of Newcastle
paultsmouth
Lost a bit of respect for Jamo last week, he was asked how he would feel if a call up came, his reply? Super Duper!
