Is today the day for Pompey?

After more than 20 years of waiting today could be the day when Pompey finally have a player - or more - named in the full England squad?

Not since Mark Hateley in 1984 have Pompey had a player picked for England. He also played, before heading off to Serie A with the mighty AC Milan.

David James and Sol Campbell had seemingly been given 'lifelines' by Spineless Steve, but whether or not James did enough to impress him when he came to Fratton on Wednesday only time will tell. Campbell missed the United game with injury so this could see his last chance with England taken from him?

Out of all the English players on view for Pompey under Spineless Steve's gaze Sean Davis would have probably impressed the most, but he is not in the reckoning although despite a mere 45 minute cameo Matty Taylor will be hoping his assist did the job for him.

David Nugent has already been mentioned by Spineless Steve this week so he will be hopeful that injuries to others give him another chance, but there is talk he may turn to Emile Heskey instead, falling flat on his face when he had a chance to score might not have helped him either.

Whatever happens a little after 2pm this afternoon we should know if the 23 year wait will end, or will James and Campbell be left wondering if their time really has gone now, Taylor when that first time will be and Nugent when it will come again.

Surely Nuge is better than Heskey?

matty taylor would have played at the end of last season i am sure had he been fit - he has a chance now, so i hope he gets it... injury will prob keep sol out wont it, jamo, well what can you say that has not already been said about him! recalling heskey over nugent would just be laughable wouldnt it...

the only thing that worries me is that while I know Pompey are a good side and will only get better with Harry and Sacha.... what sort of England side would have up to 4 pompey players in it? I love pompey an all but we're not top 4...

you dont need to be top 4 to play for england tho do you mate? if players are good enough it shouldnt matter who they play for should it... my only concern tho is once players get in the england side - if they have not already been there - matty taylor for example they have others whispering in their ear that maybe joining them at whatever club might be a good idea and would be better for them...

We will all know at 4 o'clock. Shame about Sol's injury he was a cert. Jamo I suspect will be passed up for Carson, Green and Kirkland. Matty who knows certainly IMO miles ahead of Downing. Fingers crossed.

Sean Davies has been amazing this season so far, and was looking very usefull at end of last. he was ok at beggining of last, and a bit heavy the year before. My point being he has slowly but surely got back to his best like when he played at fulham, and where he played for England, so why not??? give the lad a call Spiney, you never know, he may actually be another Pompey player ready for call up.
