Pompey debate of the day (09/08/07)

Today's hot topic of debate for the fellowship of Vital Pompey, with the season days away, is surrounding the current Pompey squad.

Are we happy with the players that have arrived, or is there an area of the squad you would still like strengthened - if so where and possibly who?

for me the squad is looking ok to good. There seems to be the 2 for each position thing going on which is now the norm really. I all honesty-and I slagged off Mr Poll as much as any of us- feel europe may have been a step too far last season in our Re-modling.This year woulld be good for us to step up. We need a free scoring striker-who does'nt. Defoe would be an excellent addition and maybe we will get him as RUG believes we will. I am not convinced about YAK for the amount of cash the papers are talking about..Matt Taylor can take PENS. I think Lua Lua will have a much much better season this year and get us 10 -15 goals. therefore I am reasonably happy with the squad but can see a forward coming..and harry has said he wants a winger

i honestly do think that we will get defoe within the next yr... altho if we dont then tbh i think we may outgrow him so he would have missed his chance! i thought all summer long that we would get him, we wont before the end of aug but depending on how we are doing and how often he plays for spurs and how they are doing come jan it may be different. if we can also get players in the england squad between now and then i think that could be the clincher.

Sometimes we need a reality check. Are we going to make Europe (perhaps). Are we going to set the world on fire in the Prem (we wish). Will we finish in the top half (we hope). Will we be struggling (we hope not). The bottom line is that we have strengthened versus last year, but one must admit so have others. The likes of Villa, Man City, Newcastle and West Ham will all have the same vision as us. Injuries may well become the deciding factor in a very competitive league. If we finish 10th will the Pompey Fans consider it a failure, I think not. This year will prove to be the best ever Premier League quality so in the end if we make top half we should be more than content. Scrapping around the relegation zone is very exciting - if you survive - but for mine staying in the Prem and strutting your stuff at the best of your ability outweighs that nervous yet exhilarating finale of survival. I hope for better than 10th but if you ask me now I will take about you ?

tbh i would take it but would be alittle disappointed tho as i really do think we are good enough to finish in the top 6 or 7, but as you say so will others... so long as we at least equal last season i would be happy but 10th would be just below that tho.

Agree Rug. I want to be optimistic but realism sometimes raises its ugly head and points at you. Please don't get me wrong ; if Pompey make Europe I will be ecstatic. By the same token if Premiership security is once again assured I will have a smile on my face. We all have that desire to chase trophies, cups and the like, but at the end of the day we need to be in the best league on the planet, year in, year out. Having said that 10th and an FA Cup Final appearance will have me flying back home come May 2008.

iv been doing a little asking around, and in truth, there are only about 4 or 5 teams that arnt suggesting that they could finish in th top 6. with the usual top 4, fulham think they can make top 6, so do west ham, man city, us, spurs, blackburn, villa, reading, newcastle, sunderland treat themselves as rank outsiders, and hope to emulate/better reading, middlebrough are also hopeful. and so on...That leaves a lot of competition, but i hope we will edge them. We have one of the best managers, and have built on a squad, that was 1 disalowed goal away from europe last season (i love the position we are in, as i think that we arnt ready for europe, but can still say that we should be there, if we had had the goal allowed/entered intertoto cup - it seems perfect)

My answer to the question posed is: i think we could still do with a STRIKER, not a FORWARD!! But, as we have bought the most expensive players the club has ever been linked with, i will settle for how we are, and see how we look come january.
09/08/2007 18:34:00
We do need a recognised goalscorer, and i would love a natural playmaker like D'Allessandro or a younger version of Berkovic or De Canio but that will cost and they are very rare, to be honest nerves creep in now and i would be happy to be in the Premiership next season and add even more quality to the squad, but i would really like Pompey to be a good competative team who could turn over the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, United and Liverpool both home and away or give them a bloody hard time. Good luck boys Play Up Pompey

Owens, i think we are already in the bracket of giving chelsea, arsenal, united and liverpool a bloody hard time, just an out and out goalscorer to take us to the next level.

We might be at Fortress Fratton mate but only the Arsenal game deserves talking about last season, we seem to be frightened of having a go away from home, and we feel that we are or should be good enough to get at them.
