Campbell waiting for Mac's call

It had virtually long since been accepted that Sol Campbell and David James' England careers were over, particularly Campbell's - well in my thinking anyway.

However with the news that Steve McClaren is planning to cast his eye over the pair, Campbell primarily - although James will certainly impress him too and is the more deserving of a recall if truth be known - with the view to handing him an England recall after over a year in international exile - and Campbell is as hungry for this call as ever.

Campbell insists that his desire to represent England is as strong as ever and he wants to add to his 69 caps - the last of which came against Sweden at the 2006 world cup finals - but not as a short term stop gap, he still believes he has plenty of mileage on the clock yet.

At 32 he is not exactly at the veteran stage, but is getting on in years but he still feels, as he told the Pompey site, he has at least 4 or 5 'good years' left in him and he would like to spend these years not only playing club, but also international football.

This news is not only good news potentially for England, but possibly also for Pompey?

I was not sure that he would want to play on for this length of time, but the news that he will has filled me with more confidence that we may be able to see him in the Pompey shirt for a few more years yet - how our season pans out this time round will determine if he stays or goes. A place in Europe would surely keep him, missing out gain would probably see time called on his Fratton career.

Should Campbell and/or James get the England recalls they deserve, particularly James, then they could well become the first Pompey players to represent England for well over 20 years - and this would put Pompey further onto the map!

Always thought that once Sol sorted his head out he would walk back into the England Squad. The fact that he just wants to play football was clearly shown by his displeasure at being substituted against Fulham in HK. He has experience, pace, authority and most of all positional sense, something he was always criticised for lacking in his early days. Would be great if England squad for Germany friendly and beyond contained 2,3 or 4 Pompey players.

Even 1 would do eastney. Quite frankly they will all miss the boat because this England Manager is a law to himself. When a player (other than Beckham) falls out of favour (particularly if in his old age he plays for Pompey) then he is discarded, never to make a return. On one side of the ledger it hurts, because you know that that Pompey player is deserving. On the other side we can keep our blokes together pushing the Pompey cause to new levels. England is important but with this bloke at the helm we should rather think about Pompey and our own ambitions.

that is true mate i dont particularly like the idea of helping the tosser who is in charge of england, but having pompey players in the next england squad - which i stick my neck out and say we WILL have at least 1 in it! - will finally show those still doubting pompey that they have arrived.

Sol is the man, and deserves the chance to play for England, week in and week out he is as good as any of the others and has a maasive presence, if there is any justice he will be in the squad, as would Jammo, Matty and David Nugent.

im thinking it will happen like busses - all at once, or none at all. If stevei comes (as he says he will) he will see sol, jamo, and matty all performining against high class oposition - which we normaly (touch wood) do well against - or at least put up a good fight. He had Nugent in the squad before, so i would not be surprised if he was still in it, having made his required step-up to a better side, and matty and gary are at least respected by steve, so could both get there first call ups to. or, he could just forget to tunr up/get lost/not bother...

as for the idea that pompey playors cant make it, last season was the first time that we had a real, justifiable casue to have playors called up (on 3 counts, with the injuries on the left side). The fact that he ignored us then, could be a sign for the future, or could be something that he will feel indebted to us about, and therefore have increased trips in the future. I doubt this, but it would be nice :)

basically he is fighting for his job, so it is pride swallowing time and time for him to pick the players that deserve to be picked, not just his under performing, or never should be internationals, *cough, downing, cough* it is desperate times for him now - drastic measures are needed and pompey could be his saviour :)
pompeyrug
seeing as we could nearly field an all-england XI, why doesnt he just take our whole squad? - jamo, sol, linvoy, oneil, hughes, davis, taylor, nugent - thats nearly all the squad...you only need to pick a cople of fullbacks, and another striker, and he has his team sorted!!! - AND im pretty sure that they would do better than the currnet england team.
pompeycarpet
he couldnt have hughes tho could he, as he is already spoken for by the scots - but we could throw cranie into the reckoning...
pompeyrug
doh - ooops, forgot that ;-)...he just seems like a gentleman, it escaped my mid that he could be a kilt waring, bag pipe wielding barbarien ;-)

Carpet was testing us, well done mate it keeps us all on our toes, rug you win the prize.
Owenspompey
just like i was testing him with my 'around 10pm on saturday morning' comment - see we are on the ball and onto each others little mindgames :)
