Campbell handed Pompey captaincy

Campbell handed Pompey captaincy

Harry Redknapp has officially handed Sol Campbell the captains armband for the 2007/08 season - which will not only put to bed any lingering thoughts that he could leave, but also send out a clear message to those courting him.

Campbell takes over from Dejan Stefanovic, who has captained the side for the last couple of seasons, but with his starting place far from assured this season the right decision has been made.

It was slightly puzzling when Redknapp previously said that Stefanovic would retain the captaincy, as my thinking, along with many others, is that he will do well to feature often enough to have justified this on merit.

He has been a great servant to the club, but on the evidence of last season he would have some catching up to do to warrant his place in the starting line up week in week out, with Hermann Hreidarsson now looking the likely man to start the season at left back.

Redknapp will not discard Stefanovic, nor should he, but it is a near certainty, that as a player, this will be his final season with the club. If his lack of involvement in pre season is anything to go by he will not feature that often this season, so there is the chance he could leave in the January transfer window if he is not playing much - possibly, but unlikely, before?

A Master stroke in my opinion. Harry is very very astute, and here we have a strong case for securing an asset with reward. Not only deserving but seen as the perfect COMPLETE PASSE.

In my opinion the inevitable decision and definitely the correct one, he is a big player and a good leader. Harry knew he was the man to lead us in the Premiership, and whilst i can understand his loyalty to Dejan i think even he knew that his chances would be really limited and common sense has prevailed.

Thats great news, just thought sol didnt want it. I think it shows his commitment to the club to undertake this role, lets be honest, he was the captain on the pitch last year anyway!

Well thats Sol here for the next 9mths then, no more silly talk of him going now. Have to feel a little for Stef tho, must be a little humiliating for him to paraded as our Captain then have it taken away!...Good news for the club all the same though.

No apparantly Gary is still the vice captain, big wages are now free for someone to come into the squad, and Collins fatboy has exited as well. Dejan wll be big enough to just get on with the task of getting back into the team and he will give it his best shot when he is given the chance, he has never been a quitter.
