Benjani not ridiculed anymore

Benjani not ridiculed anymore

Okay, maybe Benjani is still ridiculed, but not by any true Pompey fan!

The one time club record signing at £4.4m from Auxerre - until Sulley Muntari came along for £7m, then David Nugent and John Utaka after, all beating the amount paid for the Zimbabwean - may not have scored the goals that he was bought to score, but he has more than repaid his fee, even if it was a little hefty.

He has come along way from the shy recluse he once was - often said to have hidden away on his own, spending the majority of his time alone in his room - and is rapidly becoming, if he is not already, one of our most important players.

After getting his first full season behind him, as well as overcoming some injury worries, he will be even stronger during the 2007/08 season and all being well we will even see him into double figures goals wise, although his work rate and determination will be worth almost as much to us as the goals he could score.

My thinking was - and this is something I have always completely believed to be true - that if we could bring in a goalscorer to play alongside him we will have the makings of a formidable partnership and a partnership that will also see Benjani scoring goals too, we now hopefully have the options to make this viable.

We will be missing several forwards that will be heading off to the African Nations in the early part of next year, but he will not be one of them, as I am told Zimbabwe are unable to qualify?

Love the man to bits, superb work rate, team player and all round BIG GRIN! Will be the perfect foil for a true Striker. The difference when he came on last night was immense, he does read the others well as well.

he plays with passion and enjoys the game too doesnt he, which helps him... completely agree mate, perfect foil to any real striker and altho the battle for places is on, my thinking is it is the battle to start alongside him as he is the one constant in the forward department...

I can't believe he is the same guy that I remember screaming at when we lost 3-1 to Man Utd the season before last! Lazy, looked lost, didn't want the ball, got caught out too often...What a transformation...Can't really see how he can be left out now.

some players take a while to adjust to the lge, the surrounding and the country dont they - benjani was one of these people. he often kept himself to himself didnt he which cant have helped, but he fella is something else and i really do believe that he will score goals this season...

He is a fantastic asset to any team we put out. Although it woud be great for the club and him personally to bang in a few this season, if he does no more than assist in making the goals and as a result we as a team win through his efforts, then that will do for me.

It is good news that Zimbo cannot qualify for the African Nations. Takes a bit of pressure of Nugget who was bound to pick up an injury the week before they started. Every fan I know loves Benjy but the TV pundits don't share the same view e.g Paul Merson's comments before the Asia final.

he is a defenders nightmare - he runs around so much, that the defence must get pretty tired, so when either he, or a another striker make a run, they just cant keep up, and the goals go flying in - well thats the theorie.in regards to being our no.1 striking opton, dont think we can really say we have one. Nuggat will lay a lot, after all we payed for him, LuaLua is looking much better after the break, kanu (if he signs), whilst unlikely to get a starting position, HR said he could be our "super sub" - although that could be contested bu Lua. 1 more, and we will be laughing, hopefully, all the way to europe.

i havent really heard Benji ridculed, i have heard many shout at him for his lack of confidence, mostly people really do want him to score as much for himself as for the club. Toward the end of last season when he had put in 4 goals my girlfriend was saying his work rate should make him player of the month.
