Optimus primed for new contract

Pompey have handed Linvoy Primus an improved contact, that providing he plays a set number of games this season will see him given a further years extension to his current contract that expires at the end of the 2007/08 season.

After agreeing the deal he spoke on the Pompey site, with him saying 'I'm glad that I've signed a new deal. It provides some security for me and my family.

'I'm confident of playing the number of games required to get another year - you have to be.

'We've signed some very good defenders this summer but you need a good squad to succeed in the Premier League'.

Primus, or Optimus Primus as I call him, which will also explain the title a little more, is one of my absolute favourites with Pompey and I certainly hope he can play the games he requires to extend his stay with the club.

He may not be the best defender in the world but the thing that makes him so good is the fact he knows his limitations and does not try to exceed them. He also gets on with the job without making a fuss, when others would do the exact opposite.

I have had concerns that he might not get the chance that he deserves this season, due to the arrival of others, particularly Sylvain Distin, but I suppose I have had this feeling every season and he always takes his chance when it arrives, as he will again this season.

He may be 33 now but he shows no signs of fading, quite the opposite in fact, as the older he gets the better he seems to become.

im sure linvoy will get the starts he needs. this extended contract is important for the club too, otherwise we could be losing both him AND campbell at the end of this season. :-(

im still hopeful that a good season, which would prob have to see us into the uefa cup, will see sol stay... as it is if sol does go, it will become even more important to keep optimus primus...

This man is awesome. always know you are gonna get 100% whenever he is around. Sol has to stay, he brings out the very best of Linvoy! Linvoy for England!
