'If It's Football, It's Vital'

So, who is Pompey captain?

Amid talk that Pompey had held 'clear the air talks' with Sol Campbell over his future, with us 'trying to convince him to stay here', Peter Storrie had said to the Daily Star 'Harry has made him captain so that shows where we are coming from'.

Does this mean Campbell has been made captain permanently? If so this goes against what Harry Redknapp had said recently about Dejan Stefanovic retaining the captaincy this season - or was it just for the Barclays Asia Trophy?

I have nothing against Stefanovic, who has been a loyal servant to the club, but the captain will always play - when available. So on the evidence of last season he might not merit such an assured place unless he was captain.

My thinking would easily be Campbell is the right man, but was his recent captaining of the side a temporary thing or is it now going to be a permanent thing as Storrie seems to be implying?

i have alwys said it should be Sol. He is proven, respected and clearly is motivated to succeed. The only surprise it has taken so long.

here here! I was thinking that he didnt want it though.
pompey4me
I think you will find Sol captain and Dejan club captain, keeps both men happy and is a bit of a cop out to relegate dejan
paultsmouth
yep, i agree with that mate - was just going to say that myself... sol long as sol wants to be captain he is the best man for the role. it will be interesting to see who will be catpain tho when both play at the same time should this be the case...
pompeyrug
arsnal have said theat they will go for 3 captains (?), so why not let us have 2...iagree though paultsmouth, club captain and pitch captain seem preferable, its just up to harry though.
pompeycarpet
paultsmouth i cant agree, why is it a cop out. OK he has been loyal to Harry, but he continually undermined Tony Adams. Dejan has neither the mobility or presence to perform against the top clubs. Every body is aware that he did not command the respect of the previous influx and certainly the new lot wont feel obligated.I am quite frankly fully expexting Dej to take a mortgage out on a bench. The only issue i see is that i like pompey4me i didnt think Sol wanted the responsibility but hey if Sol is willing to step up to the proverbial plate to drive the club on, good news i say.
russellm
i am still not 100% sure Sol's outspokeness didnt involve HR trying to loosen some purse strings. But perhapse that is ust me being a cynical old miserable Victor
russellm
those strings are pretty loose already tho arent they mate - but i see what you are saying...
pompeyrug
russelm when i said cop oot, i meant token gesture to keep dejan feeling involved
paultsmouth
Dej wont be taking a mortguage out anywhere..on his wages he will be buying a house out right near Leicester, mark my words.
plymouth graham
yep, if he is not playing much come january he prob wont hang around and leciester will be his next port of call - whatever happens he will be off to join milan next summer tho at the latest...
pompeyrug
Tricky situation and a tough call for HR to make but this type of thing happens as clubs move forward and as long as Sol has the heart for Pompey (only he will know) he is a great choice.
Sachas_Brother
i agree Bro, its if Sol has changed his mind and wants it, give him the arm band, let him take repsonsibilty and show the club what ambition is.
