Defoe staying with Spurs?

As ever the 'silly season' - also known as the summer transfer window - has thrown up a real beauty today, with opinions on the matter contradicting each other all over the shop.

Fresh 'reports' are claiming that Pompey were 'to test the resolve of Spurs' by bidding a club record £12m for Jermain Defoe.

Many sources around the cyber world see this as something quite possible, even likely, but if the player rules this out, although it does not mean it is entirely true I think it gives enough of an indication - as did what he said really.

He has said that he expects to stay with Spurs and if he was going to leave he would have done so by now. He did not much sound like a fella thinking about a move away though - at the moment anyway.

It is known that Harry Redknapp is looking for a striker to fill the vacant no.9 shirt and Defoe would have filled that shirt nicely, but my thinking is, for now, it is time this matter was put to bed.

This could be a different matter when January arrives though - depending on how much football he is getting and how both teams are going in the league?

i hope he likes sitting down.

Yeah i agree, he needs to move on!!

Defoe has been on Sky TV frequently saying he would only leave spurs for a top 4 club. The other issue is assuming a UEFA place is a pre requisite for the club, if we cant afford 8 mill for Kanoute who has a better euro pedigree, how can we pay 12mill for Defoe who does not.
russellm
With the Matty Taylor rumours still flying around, what chance a player plus cash deal for defoe. I'd prefer Taylor to stay though.
bluedr
It won't be Defoe, more likely Kanoute, and I hope it is. I think Freddie would bring much more to the party! I think that Nuggat would benefit much more from this partnership.
pentonpompey
i am not sure that we cannot afford £8m for kanoute russ, it is more that we wont pay £8m for kanoute dont you think? i have been convinced all summer that defoe would come here before the new season - it is now unlikely, but i still think we will see him in a pompey shirt somewhere down the line... if we could get him by offering matty taylor, i would not want this, matty is too important to us... im more than happy with our lot now, so if we get another striker it is a big bonus - if not we have plenty to see us through until january at least...

Prefer Taylor to stay. Can't imagaine Defoe leaving, even a bit part player for Spurs makes a lot of sense for him. Still gets Euro football, his high life in London, England call ups, why should gamble that. Freddie is a gamble at £8m.
storagematt
He will stay with us (Spurs) for another season or two.
Frisky
why Frisky?? whats the point fo him?..as much as I would like him here cause I think hes a top player, as far as I can see you have 3 better strikers, who WILL play before he does. If he wants to further his career he must sign for a club who will play him week in week out. Even though we got a few more good'ns now, I feel he would start for us!...if not Pompey, the boys gotta move!

Reasons why I am gkad that Defoe isn't coming: 1. We don't need to splash out on another striker, sign one on a free or loan to cater for the ACN player deficit. 2. Defoe is lazy. 3. When I saw a 'future of pompey' video on youtube that was created by a pompey fan, it showed a picture of Defoe along with the UEFA cup and top 6 finishes. Are we really revolving around Defoe? Let's face it, he is a bit overrated and he isn't going to be our key to the way up. The only good reason I can think of for signing Defoe is that Nugent will steal all his goals.

typo:w 'why I am glad that'

one of the few times my cockney mates are sincere is whn they are talking about Defoe, they genuinly feel he wont be what he could be because he is lazy and believes his own hype. So, trying to be positive ( in with pain out with love) i agree with pentonpompey, kanoute will be a positive team player he has scored double figure goals and also created for double figure goals, he can do it at all levels. i feel kanoute is the positive choice, although i would take Defoe over Harewood
russellm
but there is still that african cup thing
russellm
harewood has already gone to villa tho, so we dont have to worry about that anymore russ...
