What a squad Pompey have!

From looking at 'The Glovers', the official matchday programme after the game on Saturday it completely hit me that we have a very tasty looking squad!

This is even though some names were missing from this list and others maybe will leave or are not even hear anymore, most notably Ivica Mornar - who, for anyone that has not seen this programme was honestly listed!

The keepers are not an area that really need looking at, but should anything happen to England's best keeper David James - god forbid, I would still have complete faith in Jamie Ashdown if he came in.

The full back areas were maybe looking light, but with new recruits in Martin Cranie - who so long as he gives 100%, as I am sure he will, I will back completely even if others cannot look past his saints background - along with Herman Hreidarsson, add to that the return of Richard Duffy we have extra competition for places at left and right back to that which we already had.

In the heart of defence we have three players, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin and Linvoy Primus that could literally get into most other teams in the league, that leave us incredibly strong, particularly as others can fill in too and I would include Andy O'Brien in this too, as he looked really good against Yeovil - who are no mugs.

Midfield, well this is as strong as any teams in the country with real international quality players throughout. We were looking good before with what we had, but with the arrival of Sulley Muntari, the permanent signing of Arnold Mvuemba and with what could be the emergence of Franck Songo'o we are spoilt for choice.

The additions of David Nugent and John Utaka left our attacking options looking very much stronger, even with the departure of Svetoslav Todorov. So with the likely re signing of Kanu, who will prove a real super sub this season, coupled with Benjani and Lomana LuaLua we were not far off a full deck. My thinking was we were still lacking that striking option but at first glance Geovanni looks as though he could prove to be this missing link?

I am not setting sights too high, but when I actually saw the names in a row - adding the others that were not on that programmes list - I could not help but say 'this is a bloody strong squad now, with genuine quality in all positions'. Better still we have virtual like for like replacements in all areas, even if these are maybe not quite to the quality of the person who would get the nod first of all - but they would not be far off it.

If we can get a few good results out of the tough opening 6 or 7 fixtures then things are definitely going to look good. Very very optimistic this year I have to say! (Unusual for me).

Funny how you didnt mention our captain Stefanovic at either centre half of full back! Markymark, what do you mean about the paper bag factory? Please explain.

thats usually how the bung money is handed out, in plain brown paper bags, portsmouth and bolton were the prime factory sites, now it would be best to close the bolton one and re locate to newcastle. how sweet is success based on cheating ? Fans should speak out more to save their clubs rather than accepting it.

ahh, but pompey4me i am really looking at those that have arrived mainly but do point it out that the new arrivials will add extra competition to those already here - that includes dejan... come on tho mate, lets be honest dejan is not going to play many games in central defence is he...

pompeyrug, I was meaning that you mention a lot of existing players, but not Dejan, I dont think he will feature atall at centre half, and in my opinion should not feature regularly at left back, we simply have better options nowadays. The man has been a legend here, but we should only ever go on the now, not what he has been! But, Harry has made him skipper, so , one would assume he will be the first name on the sheet every week.

Lovers of the game ? Thankfully, unlike you, Markyboy, the police will only be able to deal with FACTS. Rumours are classed as hearsay, and are therefore inadmissible, which, whilst a shame for you gossip mongers who would love to see us fall from our current upward climb,is how it should be.

And aren't brown paper bags, more recognisable,in the hands of tramps drinking booze where they shouldn't be ? You are obviously getting confused, and should perhaps go and join the queue at the Salvation Army so you've got a bed for tonight, and get that rest you clearly need.

Marky, we as fans are powerless to get involved in the goings on at any club not just Pompey. I buy my season ticket and go to as many games as i can, doing that i have the right ithink to criticise management and players when things go badly, and believe me we have had a bad time at Pompey. Now time are changing for us, and i believe it is wrong to gloat as football can bite you on the arse if you are not careful. However i trust Peter Storrie and the board and i trust Harry, i like many do not trust certain agents who have made a great living from their dealings legal and not so legal. Marky you are a big man to apologise and i think you are probably right mate certain clubs are rotten, we like to think at Fratton we are not.

cheers, owens, what I am trying to get across is that unless we, me you , and all fans start to stand up and say no more of this corruption, bung culture double dealings, double speakingt, hypocrisy, even and especially when it involves are our clubs, this beautiful game we all love is gonna be seriously and possibly irreversibly damaged.

what a squad, and what a year we could have. On the other hand, half our squad could get injured, the other half could leave, and we could fight to stay up. But then, that could happen whatever - its just less likely for us now! Play Up Pompey!

i am really excited about this season and optimistic too. even with a few injuries we have quality to cover dont we - but ideally we would not want them tho would we... after seeing geovanni slip away i am certain that we will see at least 1 more arrivial before midnight strikes at the end of august...

Rug i am with you, i think there could be at least two additions before the window shuts although the squad is strong that bloody cup competition in January is going to have a big effect on the season for many clubs. Two players who will not be going away would be sensible, and even if they were on loan that would be fine.
