What a squad Pompey have!

What a squad Pompey have!

From looking at 'The Glovers', the official matchday programme after the game on Saturday it completely hit me that we have a very tasty looking squad!

This is even though some names were missing from this list and others maybe will leave or are not even hear anymore, most notably Ivica Mornar - who, for anyone that has not seen this programme was honestly listed!

The keepers are not an area that really need looking at, but should anything happen to England's best keeper David James - god forbid, I would still have complete faith in Jamie Ashdown if he came in.

The full back areas were maybe looking light, but with new recruits in Martin Cranie - who so long as he gives 100%, as I am sure he will, I will back completely even if others cannot look past his saints background - along with Herman Hreidarsson, add to that the return of Richard Duffy we have extra competition for places at left and right back to that which we already had.

In the heart of defence we have three players, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin and Linvoy Primus that could literally get into most other teams in the league, that leave us incredibly strong, particularly as others can fill in too and I would include Andy O'Brien in this too, as he looked really good against Yeovil - who are no mugs.

Midfield, well this is as strong as any teams in the country with real international quality players throughout. We were looking good before with what we had, but with the arrival of Sulley Muntari, the permanent signing of Arnold Mvuemba and with what could be the emergence of Franck Songo'o we are spoilt for choice.

The additions of David Nugent and John Utaka left our attacking options looking very much stronger, even with the departure of Svetoslav Todorov. So with the likely re signing of Kanu, who will prove a real super sub this season, coupled with Benjani and Lomana LuaLua we were not far off a full deck. My thinking was we were still lacking that striking option but at first glance Geovanni looks as though he could prove to be this missing link?

I am not setting sights too high, but when I actually saw the names in a row - adding the others that were not on that programmes list - I could not help but say 'this is a bloody strong squad now, with genuine quality in all positions'. Better still we have virtual like for like replacements in all areas, even if these are maybe not quite to the quality of the person who would get the nod first of all - but they would not be far off it.

If we can get a few good results out of the tough opening 6 or 7 fixtures then things are definitely going to look good. Very very optimistic this year I have to say! (Unusual for me).

i wish i had set up a brown paper bag factory in portsmouth, id be like Robbie, rich beyond my wildest dreams.
16/07/2007 18:33:00
Funny how you didnt mention our captain Stefanovic at either centre half of full back! Markymark, what do you mean about the paper bag factory? Please explain.
16/07/2007 18:44:00
thats usually how the bung money is handed out, in plain brown paper bags, portsmouth and bolton were the prime factory sites, now it would be best to close the bolton one and re locate to newcastle. how sweet is success based on cheating ? Fans should speak out more to save their clubs rather than accepting it.
16/07/2007 18:50:00
Of course "allegedly"
16/07/2007 18:52:00
I think we are being a bit forward arent we Markey or are you another jealous fan from Bolton ? We dont even know what it is about yet do we, so lets not make accusations that cant be backed up !
16/07/2007 19:24:00
ahh, but pompey4me i am really looking at those that have arrived mainly but do point it out that the new arrivials will add extra competition to those already here - that includes dejan... come on tho mate, lets be honest dejan is not going to play many games in central defence is he...
16/07/2007 19:38:00
Markymark - get your facts right sunshine before you go spouting your ill informed mouth off ok? With plums like you in the world, there's no end of material for us to take the ***** out of.

Another loan for Oxlade-Chamberlain

As I think we all know by now Oxlade-Chamberlain is the son of former Pompey winger Mark Chamberlain and the brother of Arsenal's & England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
