Pompey boys - Sylvain Distin

Sylvain Distin became the first signing of the summer when on 22nd May he signed a 3-year contract, arriving as a free agent from City.

The Frenchman progressed through the stages in French football; starting at non-league level before giants PSG eventually signed him. A year with PSG came to an end with a loan move to Newcastle - this was successful enough for them to want to sign him but City got him for 4m in 2002.

Successful form on the pitch - despite the odd ricket, some very bad ones early on - saw him 'reportedly' interesting Liverpool, Newcastle and others time and again, but he stayed.

Last summer it was looking like he would move away from City as his contract moved into the final year. He would not sign a contract so he was stripped of the captaincy, but stayed despite a 3m move to Pompey or Boro expected.

Still no contract was signed when the season ended and he confirmed early this summer that he was leaving City 'for a new challenge', this new challenge came a day later when he signed for Pompey. Liverpool reportedly made a late bid to sign him but we saw them off.

Distin has had his moments during his time in England - to sometimes question his ability as a top class central defender, but these moments are far outweighed by the good ones.

Titus Bramble or Sylvain Distin? Although my thinking is still that in the right team, with the right level of quality and experience around him Bramble might still be a fine defender, Distin's experience and quality makes him the better option.

He will add further strength to the defensive ranks, leaving us with three genuine class central defenders that could get into most other sides in this league.

a great free transfer to kick start the pompey era! i think our push to get him last season and probable consistent interest throughout the season would make Distin's choice easy to come to the South coast. Not sure I understand why he chose to reject a contract and then continue for the final year, but hes here now and he will definitely be putting a lot of pressure on Linvoy for that 1st team place and this can only be a good thing! Distin v Bramble ..... Distin! good morning, good afternoon and goodnight!

off subject, kanu will sign for us [taken from tribul football site] Kanu revealed: "I love the club and I've said that many times. We have to settle this now because the new season is almost here." It was Kanu who recommended 8million new-boy and compatriot John Utaka to Portsmouth. Kanu added: "John is a special player and I can't wait for him to start playing with us." .......... 8 million?!

Well we could have paid 3m for him last year, it didn't happen. We still had a great season. We have him for free & we should have another great season. With Sol & others, yes we have come a long way since the days of Carl Tiler & Ade Whitbread. Thankfully.

has anyone ever said distin was a bad signing???? -he was the only reason man city stayed up, and it will really improe the squad to have 3 very good central defenders fighting for places.

I think i'm in dream land in all honesty, I can't quite believe the quality of player we have at the back at the moment. I mean, Lauren, Campbell, Primus, Distin, Hreidarsson, Taylor. Any of those could get into virtually any of the Prem sides, no question. Can any of us remember when we were embarrassed by such riches? PUP

Russell we were told at the game that Geovanni was a Brazilian who had been with the squad all week, and Harry was having a look at him as he is available on a free.

Well it does look like we have now acquired ourselves a formidable squad and certainly one that could make a genuine challenge for honours of some kind. Europe becoming a possibility. I have backed Pompey at 13/2 to make the top 6 as I believe they could just do it and the odds were tempting. If you compare to last season we have a great more depth and talent in all areas particularly now in attack. When you consider that we should have finished 7th bar the disallowed Arsenal goal we have a great opportunity to raise the bar. That said this season promises to be a titanic battle as all sides are appearing to strenthening their squads with extra dosh being handed around via global tv rights.

Geovanni, Looked him up on youtube, The boy looks a little tasty. Suppose anyone who scores for Barca against Man u in the Champions League is going to be. Got to be worth a punt on a freebie surely?....Any one else agree who saw him? by all accounts he played well.

thanks Owenspompey, managed to find out about him eventually. i thought he and Distin performed quite well yesterday. I watched the game with pompey rug, my concerns about the fans and LuaLua seem to be realised as i was standing in font of a prat and clearly the whatever the man was doing was going to be wrong, when he didnt pass he got stick, ok fair enough, when he did he got stick and when he scored so could this guys mother, then he kept drivelling on and there were one or two others doing the same. I AM DEFINETLY worried about the stick that was being given to Nugent, the "Go On Dave's" were funny at first but to continue for 20 mins that was just moronic, give the guy a break its his 1st game and a freindly at that. Muntari played well i thought, i did notice he played some balls into the spaces where a striker should have been but wasnt but LoL :-) we will soon slow him down to our pace. anybody know why HR appeared to go 4,5,1 again

Col8, we have bought 4 players, confirmed 1 loanee squad memeber. and got two in on free's the break down is as follows I THINK. 1) Muntari (aprx 6.6m), 2)Nugent, (aprx 6m), 3) Utaka (6m) 4)Cranie ( nominal fee thought to be about 500k and seems good value) 5) Mvuemba (the existing loanee 1m) 6) 7)Dystin (Free) 8) Hreidarson ( free). I dont think you are going to find a pompey fan who says the squad doesnt need them, we were under last season. as for the outs they are Todorov & Douala. Its not for the want of trying but the rest to go are so bad nobody wants them.

Lua Lua deserves a chance and worked hard yesterday, as for David Nugent i agree he needs time to settle in, but football fans always want instant success dont they ? Harry was just playing with formations all game and this is the time to do it, i just thought we played well and looked organised, even with all the changes at half time.

Col, it doesnt matter how much he enjoys buying players i the board wont back him then they do not come in, or doues he buy them himself ? To answer your question, Todorov and Duola have gone and Griffin and O,Brien are available, the rest are in the squad for the next season, THE SQUAD, its a system that operates in football mate !!

Owenspompey i think we need top be looking 7th and UEFA, i feel if we dont HR will be under pressure but i notice he and campbell have let slip a couple of times that "the club needs to/should be challenging for Europe this season". so hopefully he is confident. Sad that he tried 4,5,1 again yesterday i was hoping we had mostly seen the back of that

I just dont want to get carried away, we have a really tough start to the season and if it goes wrong the inevitable shouts for changes will start. Distin can only play one way and the Sol mann= will sort him out, as he is a liile bit better than Fat Boy Dunne. 7th would be great russell, in fact bloody great !!

those tw*ts behind us russ were doing my nut - i did think lualua had a poor game tho, but he was on a hiding to nothing from those tw*ts wasn't he... distin looked okay, but in a competitive match will have to look to get back in position quicker than he did... a fine signing tho and i think we have enough quality to be pushing for a uefa cup place...

You are right about giving players a hard time, the same people were giving Nugent a hard time, maybe they were bored, no they were boring, but every team has its muppet support maybe it was the homes day out. Lua Lua will be fine by the time the season starts and at least he knows he has got to do a lot to win us back, i hope he does by getting 12 - 15 goals.
