Nugent targets England spot

David Nugent is not only looking for a place in Europe with Pompey, he has also set his sights on a Euro 2008 place with England next summer.

He has told The News that Steve McClaren had told him he 'needs to be playing at the highest level' to stay in England contention, so now he is doing this with Pompey he is someway there.

There are other names jostling for positions with him, including his friends Darren Bent and Leroy Lita - the likes of which he will have to 'outscore' to get in but he added 'I'm a striker, I score goals and I will do it in the Premier League'.

In order to have any chance at all of playing in Euro 2008 he will have to become the first Pompey player to play for England since Mark Hateley in 1984 - and I am sure he will.

Many people feel that 'if you play for Pompey, you do not play for England', this is something that I do not completely agree with. Yep, McClaren is not a fella that uses his 'reserved seat' at Fratton but if Nugent plays well enough my thinking is he will be in.

Simple truth is Pompey have not had players good enough for England in the last 20 odd years - not when playing here anyway - until David James and Sol Campbell. The only reason they have been left out is for the simple reason he had already made up his mind that they would not feature when he took over.

Players like Nugent are England's future, so he will not be discarded because he wears the Pompey shirt if he is playing consistently well and scoring - the same will apply to Gary O'Neil and Matty Taylor also.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

absolutely buzzing with confidence I think nuge will easily get goals in the prem and hopefully we will see a clown in a seat in FP one day with its stupid hair and stupid smile and stupid northern accent. bloody foreigners :p i think nuge will get a call up eventually and with 4 yrs (potentially) playing for pompey I would hope by then he is a 1st team regular for them. as far as david james and sol campbell are concerned .... erm, i think we can agree we would love them to play for england but in some respects they are getting on a bit and keeping them to their club duties has to be a priority! PUPPPU.

The Nuge will have to perform really well at our away games as no chance of MacGit being at FP.

there are plenty of english strikers out there, it is just down to spineless to select them... if nugent does not play for england in the time he is here then the myth that 'you cannot play for england when you play here' will be true! sol, as well as he has played, is a decision i can understand, what with his age and the other options we have. jamo tho, no matter how old he is should be at least in the squad as he is the best english keeper around - i never thought i would hear myself say that :)

We have at least four players who are worthy of a place in the squad, but due to the attitude of McLaren they will be lucky to get a look in, but it will not be long before he is gone. You have to accept that Lampard, Downing and Bridge will always be in the squad, its not right nut he will always select them. Carragher knows he will not get in and i am sure the Sol man knows it is the same for him. Jammo is the best no question, what a buy he was for us. Matty is as good as Bridge and Downing but he plays for us. David Nugent deserves his chance as much as Defoe and Bent and bloody Alan Smith.

The only stumbling block for Nugent is a little**** - no not an injection but an equally painful experience that comes in the form of the England Manager - Steve McLaren.

I cant believe he got the job, and tactically he always appears to have the gift of getting it wrong, but i am sure that David Nugent will have to get a go eventually, but he will have to be patient.

Nuge must have heard that McLaren has a terrible allergic reaction every time he comes within 50 miles of Fratton Park? Only logical explanation for Jamo and Sol (and perhaps even Matty T) being completely overlooked all season.

Well said Tantona, we have to watch the same old drivel every time he picks and England team, I just hope that Nugent scores the goals which mean that he cant be ignored, and also the others turn in performances which mean that they cant be overlooked either.

Nuggat coming could be superb news for GON and Matty T, with Mcclaren more likely than ever to show his face. It could inspire both to up their game even more than the additions to the squad

I think all the players realise that this could be a huge year for us, and surpass last years great effort. The English guys were great last year and deserved better reward than what they got last year.

With a 100% strike rate, I believe Nugent is much, much better for England than Bent or Lita.

Agree with PompeyGray, McLaren doesn't even know where Portsmouth is, he may well be a distant memory for him now.

matty and gary must have really cheered when they heard Nugent had signed! - Stevie cant not come down after he gave nugent the england call up, and hat means that he will see matty. as for jamo, it was a decision by mclaren to leave him out - as it was to leave beckham out. as yet, the goalkeeper hasnt been a complete disaster (but not good), so he wont be called up. If stevei realiesd that we were in danger of not qualifying, AND robbinson wasnt perfrorming, THE he would be called up...but only then.

Remember every time we played 'boro at FP we stuffed them. He'll be out of a job if we fail to qualify for the euros & he'll struggle to get back into a prem job. To55er.

I couldnt believe the fans who thought Nugget looked rusty, the poor lad only got with the squad on Friday. At least the real fans gave him a proper greeting, and we managed to get a few words with him, he knows how special this club is. Muntari is a big lad and will do a job for us and get him working with the Nugget and Benji and he will be fine.

Its easy to criticise mate, we have to be careful not to allow all the armchair critics get on at him, even yesterday people were on the phone saying he looked rusty etc. All i am saying is give him a chance, we will see how good he is quite quickly with fixtures we have a the start of the season.
