David Nugent is not only looking for a place in Europe with Pompey, he has also set his sights on a Euro 2008 place with England next summer.
He has told The News that Steve McClaren had told him he 'needs to be playing at the highest level' to stay in England contention, so now he is doing this with Pompey he is someway there.
There are other names jostling for positions with him, including his friends Darren Bent and Leroy Lita - the likes of which he will have to 'outscore' to get in but he added 'I'm a striker, I score goals and I will do it in the Premier League'.
In order to have any chance at all of playing in Euro 2008 he will have to become the first Pompey player to play for England since Mark Hateley in 1984 - and I am sure he will.
Many people feel that 'if you play for Pompey, you do not play for England', this is something that I do not completely agree with. Yep, McClaren is not a fella that uses his 'reserved seat' at Fratton but if Nugent plays well enough my thinking is he will be in.
Simple truth is Pompey have not had players good enough for England in the last 20 odd years - not when playing here anyway - until David James and Sol Campbell. The only reason they have been left out is for the simple reason he had already made up his mind that they would not feature when he took over.
Players like Nugent are England's future, so he will not be discarded because he wears the Pompey shirt if he is playing consistently well and scoring - the same will apply to Gary O'Neil and Matty Taylor also.
PLAY UP POMPEY!
