Nugent and Utaka to complete moves

Sol Campbell had told the Sun today that the 'buzz' about the club 'will only really start when he see some serious new players up front' - and big Sol might be just about to see his wishes granted!

Word is getting stronger that both John Utaka and David Nugent are closing in on signing for the club.

Media reports are saying that Pompey have increased their offer for Utaka to £7m - something that has got Rennes thinking, with it believed that it is just down to the Nigerian to decide if he does want to move to Pompey after all.

And the news coming from the Lancashire Post - latterly backed up by The News - is that terms have been agreed between Nugent and Pompey on a £6m move, with the England international agreeing to a 4-year contract that will be signed if he passes a medical tomorrow - as he should.

Signings often happen in pairs - or more - with Pompey, so can we finally be about to witness the arrival of not one, but two strikers?

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Two proper strikers - it's hard to believe. But what does Sol think of them? Will he be satisfied? Will he start to get the 'buzz' that he says is lacking at the moment? Don't naff it up, Pompey, make sure they sign.
Et_tu_Pompeii
he will be happy as they are class acts - altho tbh i dont know a lot about utaka, shame we will lose him to the african nations, so a draw back - but in the sense of out and out goalscorers would you not agree mate that neither are quite 'proper strikers'... dont get me wrong they will score goals and utaka's record with rennes is pretty tasty but they are not quite goal poachers - not that im moaning as i will be very happy with these fellas... lets sign them up before they have a change to get away...
pompeyrug
Nugent as a striker ? No doubts. Utaka as a striker? hmmm not so sure. He is a right sided player who will bring the trickery and speed to the wing but he is not an out and out striker. I still think we need another striker, Unless Hrry believes Benjani is going to get goal fever.
russellm
Happy days! Seems like our fears about Nugent will now be dispelled, as for Utaka....I don't really know enough about the guy to comment. If he shouldbe first choice on the right, what's gonna happen to Gary? Dropped our first choice in the centre? An interesting problem for Arry if it happens.
Tantona
Not sure about Utaka at that kind of price as a striker. I still think there's a deal for Kanoute there somewhere for around £7M and maybe that money may be better spent on him although his age is an issue
bluedr
yeh we tell kanu 1 year cuase your too old-which i agree with and then possibly offer Kanoute a deal and pay alot of dough for him. Mind you I would like to have Kanoute as i think he can be a class act on his day. why not Nugent, Kanoute, Benji and Utaka? The only draw back is that 3 will be gone for the ANC. Papers in M'boro are linking us wth Yak again. I would love to have Defoe in the mix somewhere myself
plymouth graham
Once i & t are sorted they we can look forward to the season.
storagematt
that still leaves us 1 striker short - Utaka is a good right sided player, which Harry said he wanted (although what happens to garry o'neil is a mystery - extra cover for right and centre?). Nugent upfront with benji is an attractive idea, although still leaves us without the goal poacher. And i still prefer yak to defoe, what ever anybody says, he would just fit in better...
pompeycarpet
the real issue with signing utaka, kanoute or yakubu is all 3 will be off to the african nations, along with lualua and benjani, leaving us with just 1 striker in nugent - assuming the medical is passed, as it should be... the solution we might have is kranjcar! he could move to a forward role, or play just behind nugent when our african fellas are away...
pompeyrug
I agree with storagematt let's get them signed up and start looking forward to the season. I think HR will use Utaka as a wide man so expect another striker. How about a countdown to the season clock and who among the army travelling to Honk Kong is reporting for Vital?
eastneydave
i will have to do my reporting from my armchair, as my flexible friends would not stretch to a visit to asia... had we entered into the two bob cup i would have gone to the arse end of wherever to see our qualifyer... good point tho mate, so who is off to asia then?
pompeyrug
What can I possibly say?
The Rabbi
I am going to Asia with a couple of mates, had to con the misses though, but she is ok about it now. It will be great to have a couple of strikers in the squad and as the Sol man says we can then move forwrd and look forward to the season, hopefully we can compare Torres to Nugent
Owenspompey
I'm getting more excited by the day about this season, with all the forward momentum we now have. Terrific news on the signings !!
lincspfcfan
I'm all for Utaka signing on as well as Nugent but we will still be short on striking options when the ACN comes round. What's annoying is that that Spurs will still have their four goal efficient strikers present throughout the period, with Mido gone.
Lysimachus
So Sky sports news, has it that Nuggat will sign after a medical tomorrow morning...reckon there is a good chance all my circulation will ceased by then, got everything crossed so tight!!!!!
pentonpompey
SSN just saidthat Kanu is reported to be signing a new one year deal tomorrow as well!!!!! so much for Ajax then
pentonpompey
It looks like the boy is coming after all, i take back everything i said about him, i just hope that he is able to deliver the goals we need. Good Luck David and i hope that we can welcome you to Portsmouth
Owenspompey
Kanu and his agent must have suddenley realised that we are the club for him, as long as he can produce his early season form all next season we wil be right behind the man.
Owenspompey
excellent, i have fa tht kanu will deliver his clear talent, along with nugent, and utaka wide right, our aatack force could be quite formidable at last! (oh, and rug, ive now got the pompey new kit thingy...stunning picture of benji in the middle :) ...so its only you know :p )
pompeycarpet
oh, and the BBC now say nugent is going to sign. well, thats that, weve got him :D
pompeycarpet
God bless the BBC, what could possibly go wrong now? A new kit a new stadium and now an England striker, its just like having Mariner, Channon and Thomas back.
Owenspompey
God bless the Bury websites, they broke the story first! And got it spot on about signing wednesday after a medical!
paultsmouth
well done you for going to the isle of white paultsmouth its all down to you ( says i through gritted bad loser teeth). lets forget Utaka as a forward and see him as a winger and we shouldnt be dissapointed. same drunk ex reporter Bury mate says Yak to discuss move with Man C end of this week. ACoN or not i think it will be good to carry out a yak hijack, he would settle quicker than Defoe.
russellm
For any doubters there are photos of Nugent saying goodbye to PNE fans at their training ground on the Lancashire Evening Post website
paultsmouth
Well done Paul, we must all be desperate for this man to arrive the way we have trawled the net etc to find out what is going on. Feel our pain Harry !!
Owenspompey
On the first day, Sascha said "let there be new stadium plans" and there were new stadium plans. On the second day, Sacha said "let there be a new youth coach, and training facilities" and it was done. On the third day, sascha said "let us sign some new young playors" and a rushden dimonds duo apeared. On the fourth day, sascha said "Let us get a fantastic new stae of the art kit" and that too was done. On the fifth day, sacha said "let us sign some quality foreign playors" and sulley arrived. On the 6th day, sacha said "let us sign some quality english playors" and nugent apeard. And on the sevnth day, sacha looked down upon his team, and saw that they were rested, and fit for the new season, and he saw that all was good...
pompeycarpet
have i taken that too far? either way, im very pleased :D
pompeycarpet
Has any one else just heard Harry harry on sky confirming that the medical is i the morning
plymouth graham
yep, its all looking very good! lets get Utaka, and yakubu, and we are sorted!
pompeycarpet
I feel a bit silly now having left the above message before READING the others.. Carpet...I think your chronology is a little out
plymouth graham
DON'T WATCH THIS SPACE ANYMORE - WE HAVE GOT OUR MAN
pompeygray
i dont think the bible cared about cronolgy when it said it...genisis 1 and 2 are both diffeent orders :)
pompeycarpet
Graham great word chronology, i thought he was a dutch midfielder, are we trying to sign him now? I could not go through it all again.
Owenspompey
portsmouth labeled a "big club" by nugent, and denies any disopointment about missing out on his boyhood club, everton! and there could still be more signings to come in before the start of theseason. PUP
pompeycarpet
Harry hinted that at least one more player could be on the way, who would we want to come now? There must be rumours already, i would think it had to be a midfielder, could it be Bouazza from Watford, he is a natural left sided player. We are now a big club lads!!
Owenspompey
7 days of carpet F)king brilliant
russellm
and im sure the rabbi will bless that thought
russellm
ah, thanks russlm - ill have to paste it into every other thread, on every site, just so everyone reads it :)
