'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey Chimes (26)

What happened on Monday with Pompey and the media? Lets take a look.

There we were expecting to see the plug pulled on the David Nugent deal when the official Preston site sprung the news on us that he would not be returning to training as expected - instead he was returning for further talks with Pompey. This was covered in full by Vital Pompey in this article Nugent back for more talks?

Andy Griffin has little or no future at Pompey, but with a permanent move to Stoke still to happen he has admitted that he might have to stay here - and if he does he will accept it. What he told The News could be an example to many a footballer and his attitude is top class - it is just a shame his football cannot match this.

Preston gaffer Paul Simpson told sky sports news that he understands why it is taking Nugent so long to decide on his future and whether this lies with Pompey or not? He also claims that it was he that delayed the Sunderland move and not Nugent - but also said he expects a decision very soon, as all parties need to know what is going on.

The thing that really caught my eye was the news coming out of Spain that Sevilla have put a ridiculous price of £10m on the head of Fredi Kanoute, with club president Jose Maria Del Nido telling the Spanish press 'if any club is interested in Kanoute the minimum price is €15million (£10million)'.

That is some way short of our reportedly previously rejected offer of £4.7m.

Even by today's standards that is a bit extreme and no one is going to pay that for a 29-year old, particularly as he has not exactly been prolific over the years, before the 2006/07 season has he.

Kanoute himself seems to be looking to increase his weekly pay packet but has hinted that a return to England is his favoured move - but with the amount Sevilla are looking for my thinking is he will be lucky to get a move anywhere, let alone England.

This is definitely the end of the line for Kanoute's hopes of a move to Pompey, or our hopes of seeing him move here now you would think?

10m for Kanoute is way too much for a player that at best was an average striker at both West Ham and Spurs.

Kanoute is somewhat steep, i think the factthat he has been succesfull at a high level says he is better than average but 10M thats over he top. If he was I think this partly refelects the fact that there is money floating around in the spanish game as well as ours.

although, that is only media speculation...

dont bother! although, our offer "well above €10million" (quoted from Pierre Dreossi) for Utaka sounds intresting...meanwhile the northern echo is saying that Yakubu is expected to leave boro to either us or man city for a fee of around 9million...
pompeycarpet
£10 million is indeed too much for Kanoute, but if we were to sign him he would most certainly get us far more goals than anyone currently at the club. Utaka or Yak would cost about the same anyway, so one from three (or to two if Nuge isn't unveiled on Wednesday/Thursday as certain rumours would suggest). Griffin really shouldn't bother staying here unless he intends to badly damage whats left of his career - he's blatantly not going to make the first team now. Move to Stoke lad, they're desperate for you! But yes, you do have to admire his attitude.

Yes £10 million is too much, but he WILL go for cheaper than that price. As already said, the price is there to try and scare off any suitors. If Kanoute does not get the deal he wants then they will have to offload him. It's haggling territoy, we say £4 mill, they say £10, so we go back with £7 and they say £8 and we deal around £7.5 with a pay per play scheme. I honestly believe Nugent and Kanoute would be the best combo.

Once we have sorted one striker, no doubt, like car speeding fines, you get another. Not bitter.

yep £10m is too much for kanoute, the £6m or £7m sounded steep, but fairer... that is often the pompey way isn't it mate, we sign 1 player and another - or more - often follow soon after...
pompeyrug
I agree with you all 10 million is too much for Kanoute, but would that be right for Defoe. It would be a big day for the club to get Nugent and another striker in the same day. I also see that Sky are saying that Bouazza is pushing for a move from Watford, could he be on his way?
Owenspompey
from what i saw of the fella last season he looks okay, but not £5m okay tbh, which is what watford want i believe... i think £10m for defoe would be a different story adn a fairer price...
